THE DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA
“Brothers and sisters: You are God’s building. According to the grace of
God given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and
another is building upon it. But each one must be careful how he builds
upon it, for no one can lay a foundation other than the one that is there,
namely, Jesus Christ.” (Paul to Corinthians)
Dear St. Patrick’s Parish Family,
Greetings of the Lord’s peace, joy and hope be with you on this
feast of the Lateran Basilica!
This annual special feast honors the Roman Church that is called
the Pope’s Church. Our message today looks to highlight God’s
temple, whose foundation is Christ, in which the Spirit dwells.
Hopefully our membership is very important.
Our parish family was very visible last weekend as we
celebrated All Saints/All Souls. The liturgy remembering all our
recently departed loved ones was special. Many families
responded to our invitation and felt welcome. I am grateful to
our Ministry of Consolation for this welcome moment. The
second moment was the 10AM Family Mass where our
Communion II children and their families were present for a
commitment ceremony. Please pray for those families during
this important year. Finally, the Open House that was offered
all weekend was appreciated by lots of us. Our Osborne Hall
Auditorium is a much nicer place, and you are thanked for
supporting this needed project.
A Mass is celebrated in our parish cemetery at this time of the
year to remember all our beloved deceased. This year’s mass
will be celebrated this coming Tuesday, Veterans Day, at
11AM. If it is not a good day, this Mass will take place in our
church.
Last weekend and its special moments gave us lots to thank our
God for.
Let us continue to pray for each other.
P.S. Having been reminded of the importance of the Catholic
Ministries Appeal a few weeks ago, I hope some of you will
consider supporting the Appeal. Remember, when you support
the Appeal you also help our church.
PLEASE NOTE: Tuesday, November 11, Veterans Day, at 11am, we
will celebrate a Mass in St. Patrick’s Cemetery for all buried in the
cemetery and all veterans on their day.
Inclement weather – Mass will be in church.

Stewardship Reflection for this Week:
As we pray today for an increase of spiritual gifts,
we are reminded by the Bishops’ Pastoral on
Stewardship that good stewardship of the Church
“means cherishing and fostering the gifts of all,
while using one’s own gifts to serve the
community of faith.”
Living Stewardship:
We are grateful this week for all stewards in our
parish who use their God-given gifts to serve
others, especially through our parish’s ministries as
well as out into the wider community.
Thank you for sharing your gifts and
talents here in our parish community.

In the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church, November 9 is the feast of
the Dedication of the Basilica of St. John Lateran, often referred to in older
missals as the Dedication of the Basilica of the Holy Savior. In view of its
role as the mother church of the whole inhabited world, this day is celebrated as a Feast in the present universal calendar of the Catholic Church.

ATTENTION ALL ALTAR SERVERS
Please find a replacement if you
cannot serve as scheduled.
For several weeks, we have considered penance as a sacrament of forgiveness, and yet there are two other sacraments in
this category. The first, of course, is the Eucharist itself. The other is the sacrament of the sick, long associated with
penance.
The Letter of James sets out the deep tradition for caring for the sick: sending for the priests, who will pray and lay
their hands on the sick ones, anointing them with oil, and giving them forgiveness. Long before other rites of penance
developed, the sacrament of the sick was therefore a profound experience of forgiveness. Jesus often healed the sick,
nearly always as a visible sign of forgiveness of sin. The tradition didn't unfold smoothly, however, and within a few
centuries the oil of the sick was taken home to be applied by caregivers as a salve, or even to be drunk as a medicine. As
early as the second century, bishops were therefore urging that priests should be the ones to visit those separated by
illness from the Sunday assembly. Thus the practice of consigning the Eucharist and the oil of the sick to the nonordained faithful to bring home was relatively short-lived.
