Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Each year on April 29 we celebrate the dedication of our Diocesan Cathedral, the Cathedral of Saint Catharine of Siena. Each year on November 9, we celebrate the dedication of the Cathedral of Rome, the Lateran Basilica. At first it might seem odd that Saint Theresa’s in Hellertown would celebrate a Cathedral in Allentown and a Cathedral in Rome, but when we stop to think about it, it is not odd at all. It is all about our apostolic roots. Jesus gathered a group of Disciples to accompany Him in His public ministry. From this group of Disciples, Jesus Himself chose twelve to be His Apostles. The Apostles shared intimately in Jesus’ ministry and life. They were His constant companions. These Chosen Disciples heard with their own ears Jesus’ teachings, saw with their own eyes Jesus’ miracles, and participated in His way of life. After Simon proclaimed Jesus to be the Christ, the Messiah, Jesus proclaimed Simon to be “Peter,” which translates into English as “rock”. Jesus declared that it was on this “rock” that He would build His Church. Peter was chosen to be Jesus’ Vicar, to be the guardian of the entire Flock of Christ. In both Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition the Apostles handed down to us what they themselves had received directly from Christ. The Apostles as a whole and Peter as their leader were chosen to protect, defend, and guide the Flock. When Jesus ordained the Apostles to be His Bishops, He also gave them the power to pass on their sacred vocation to their successors. When Jesus chose Peter to be His Vicar, He also gave the Apostles the authority to choose successors for Peter’s Office. The Bishops are the successors of the Apostles. It is through our Bishop that we remain linked to the Faith that Jesus Himself entrusted to the Apostles. It is natural for our Diocese to celebrate the dedication of the Cathedral in which our Bishop presides over the flock entrusted to his care: the Flock of the Diocese of Allentown. The Popes are the successors of Peter, the Vicar of Christ. It is through our Pope that we remain united as one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. It is natural for the entire Church to celebrate the dedication of the Cathedral in which our Pope presides not only over the Flock of Rome, but over the entire Flock of Christ. Celebrating the dedication of the Cathedral of Saint Catharine of Siena in Allentown and celebrating the dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome is all about celebrating our apostolic roots. May the Peace of Christ be with You Always, Father Tauber _________________________________________________ THE RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS (RCIA) Are you interested in the Catholic Faith or in becoming a full member of the Catholic Church? The month of November in particular is dedicated to prayer and penance for our brothers and sisters who have gone before us to eternal life. With confidence in the mercy and compassion of God, we lift them up in prayer, asking God to free them from their sins, to purify their souls, and to raise them up to eternal glory in heaven. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord; and let perpetual light shine upon them. May all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
