Do Justice
Take my yoke upon you and learn
from me, for I am gentle and
humble in heart, and you will find
rest for your souls.
Matthew 11:29(NIV)
When you meet someone who epitomises what it
means to be a follower of Christ you feel a sense of
contentment. There is a real peace in their presence; a
calmness, and it is a place you feel that you would like
to stay a while.
As a teacher, encountering such humility in youth
is even more compelling. Students of this nature,
draw others calmly into their care and friendship
circle without fuss or fanfare. No acknowledgement
is required, yet their efforts are priceless. A better
reflection of the humble heart of Jesus can be difficult
to find.
By pure coincidence, the last three novels that I have
read (over a rather extended period of time I am afraid
to say) have had one character who has this presence
within the plot. In reading the story, it is a real ‘sigh’ to
learn more of their character and influence on others.
And if they are victorious in whatever manner the novel
is that little bit ‘nicer’, for want of a better word.
Humility that triumphs is a draw card that is very hard
to resist. So how do we manage to actively resist the
man that is Jesus for so long? To have lived daily in
his presence and resisted learning from him must have
been hard work. How much easier would it have been
to simply rest in his nature; to take on that real sense
of contentment and peace? A peace that passes all
human understanding.
“I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest
PD
for your souls”. As Christians, if we resist this call to
take the yoke of Jesus upon us and learn from him, we
must be working very hard to keep him out. For there
is nothing but effortless rest in being absolutely, 100%
with our Lord and Saviour. Being with him is a place
we could stay in contentment forever.

Girls
Soccer
With summer weather well and truly here, please
encourage your student to bring a water bottle to
school.
This term it has been the girls
chance to take part in a TAS
Soccer Carnival. These have
taken place over the last two
Saturdays at Westmac Anglican
College.
One tip is to get them to freeze their water bottle the
night before if it’s the type that can be frozen.
Students are allowed to take water into class with
them.
We all need to keep our fluids up but particularly
students, especially when they are doing sport and PE.
A lot of students have had headaches with the heat,
and this is understandable, but a big percentage of
them haven’t had much water to drink.
I am reluctant to be giving out Panadol when they
really just need fluids.
Warm regards,
Janelle Newton

Players: Katie Crothers (c), Emma Harper, Jess
Mayne, Evie Corfin-Pedersen, Glenna-May Le
Blansch, Sarah Von Bischoffshausen, Priscilla Daniels.
The girls played four matches on what was a very hot
day. They lost the first two but won the third 1-0 thanks
to a great goal from Katie Crothers. This placed them
third in their pool so they had to play off against third
from the other pool. It finished in a nil all draw but Faith
were unlucky not to win with a number of shots just
missing. Katie Crothers was Faith’s player of the day.

Re-enrolment for 2015
Thank you to all those families who have returned their
Re-enrolment form. This information enables us to
finalise plans for next year. If you have not yet returned
this form it would be appreciated if you could do so at
the earliest opportunity. If your child is not or may not
be returning, completing this form will fulfil the College
requirement of giving one term’s notice. Parents who
do not give a term’s notice may be liable to pay an
amount equal to one term’s fees.
We do have spare forms at Student Reception if
needed.
Enrolment Update
Enrolments for Year 7, 2015 are almost full and we
still have vacancies for Year 8. We encourage anyone
who is looking for a position in 2015 to please lodge
an application as soon as possible so their child does
not miss out on the opportunity of being involved in our
Orientation days during November.
There are limited vacancies in all other year levels.
Interviews for 2016 are now being held and we are
encouraged with the number of applications already
received. If you have a child in Year 5 and you would
like them to attend our College please contact the
College for an Information Package and Enrolment
Application.

Labour market trends in Australia
The following information is adapted from an article in the
September 2014 edition of the Australian Careers Service
Newsletter.
Industry Growth in in key employment sectors
Accounting and Finance: Currently most job openings are resulting from departing
workers. However, new roles will be created over the next
year or two. The sector has experienced growth of around
three per cent over the last three years but is expected to
grow by 8.4 per cent by 2017.
Engineering and technical:
Vacancies are increasing, along with predicted growth of
around 12 per cent.
There is a continued demand for civil engineering and
construction.
Manufacturing and operations: This is an industry that has been in a slow decline. With
growth of just over one percent over the last three years, but
is expected to grow by 8.4 per cent by 2017.
Mining and Resources: The mining sector is now flattening. There is good news for
experienced candidates due to a shortage of highly skilled
engineers, but some mining operations are cutting staff
numbers. The past three years saw overall workforce growth
of 43 per cent, with further growth of around 14 per cent
expected by 2017.
Sales and marketing: Future growth has been estimated to be around 10 percent
over the next three years. Vacancies are increasing
and there is a growing need for experienced marketing
professionals.
Trades: This is an area of growth – particularly for experienced
workers in the areas such as construction, Engineering
and science-based roles are also experiencing growth.
Vacancies are increasing overall and the industry is set
to grow by more than eight per cent, with similar growth
opportunities for both permanent and casual workers.
Transport and logistics: The transport and logistics industry is suffering a skills
shortage. Although the temporary and casual workforce has
experienced a decline in recent years, overall growth has
been three per cent. Over the next three years, growth is
predicted to be nine per cent.

Halloween Is Kind
of Dumb!
Let’s face it, Halloween is kind of dumb. The original intent was, as far as I can gather, to be a pagan
festival to celebrate the end of harvest season when the
spirits of the dead gathered around the crops to wreak
havoc in the farmers. So, people would dress up in dark
costumes, scary masks and dance wildly around the bonfires
(not bomfires and one of my friends used to say) hoping to
appease the evil spirits. Supposedly the flames would draw
the bugs which in turn would draw the bats.
Voila – what could be better than a holiday than one with
scary costumes, bats and fire.
It’s changed, though. When we lived in the United States,
it was probably one of my least favourite nights of the year.
Sure, it was fun to take our daughters out in their nice,
pretty princess outfits and see some decorated houses, but
then when we got home, I spent most of the night stomping
grumpily to the door to shoo away the kids who had put
a little make up on their faces and then expected me to
feed their sugar
addiction.
I guess I was the
ogre.
From a Christian
perspective, though,
the understanding
of the day of
Halloween is a little different. The ‘hallowed evening’ or, ‘holy
evening,’ was the night before All Saints Day. November
1 is the day that we remember all those that have died in
the year before. Oftentimes, in churches, candles are lit in
memory of the loved one. It’s in the light that we remember
who the Light of the World is – Jesus.
For many, remembering is a hard thing. It’s difficult to think
of the loved one lost because
their absence is always felt.
We see them in places where
they used to walk; we hear
them in the songs of the past
or even the sounds of creation;
we sense their memory in the
smells of a closet or clothes
that they used to wear. To
remember is like a sharp stab to the heart.
But without remembering, we forget two things:
1.
Who we are
In spending time with people and walking with them on their
journey of life, our own is enhanced and we would not be
today the same without them.
2.
God’s promise to us
That at the end of all things, God raises us again to judgment and then to new life.
It is a hallowed time. A holy time to remember not only those
who have gone before, but the one who comes after us.
God bless you on this hallowed evening. May he bless you
with memories of past loved ones and build future memories
with those who are in your midst.
Peace,
Pastor Reid

Ag Inspirations
Last week saw the second running of the Ag Inspirations
Program within the Lockyer Valley. Following such a
successful program in 2013, Ag Inspirations was again
organised for 5 students from each of the three Lockyer
Valley Secondary Schools; Faith Lutheran College, Laidley
High School and Lockyer District State High School.
AG Inspirations is an Agriculture ‘industry’ specific program
delivered to students in the Lockyer Valley and is based
upon the Work Inspirations Campaign. Recent evaluations
from Work Inspirations (AUS) have highlighted that not only
do young people benefit, but also businesses participating in
Work Inspiration Campaigns. Further to this, the opportunity
to strengthen partnerships between Schools and Agriculture
and its associated industries is a distinct advantage.
A number of employers participated in the Lockyer Valley AG
Inspirations program;
Ghost Gully, Gatton; Moira Farms, Forest Hill; Stanbroke
Beef, Grantham; Qualipac, College View and the University
of Queensland, Gatton Campus . Guest speakers from
DAFF, Growcom and GVEC (Gatton Vocational Education
Centre) made presentations
to the students
regarding the endless
amount of opportunities
available, nationally and
internationally within the
Agricultural Industry.
The program was
implemented over a 3
day period, commencing
Monday, 20th October 2014
through to Wednesday
22nd October 2014.
Students sacrificed their
student free day and made
a formal application to be
eligible to participate in the
program.
Students participated in
a variety of
hands on
activities
including;
milking dairy
cows, touring
the entire
Stanbroke
Meat
Processing
Plant, Picking
Onions
and carrots
at Moira
Farms and
touring the Qualipac factory to see how this produce is sent
to markets locally, nationally and internationally. They also
assisted with the planting of hydroponic lettuce at Ghost
Gully Farms and witnessed the process of preparing the
freshly harvested produce for market including the many
packaging options. Participants were also given a tour of the
University of Queensland Gatton campus and participated in
presentations from GVEC plus a presentation on the drones
utilised at UQ when studying Engineering.
Bronwyn Ford, Senior Economic Development Officer from
DAFF, Peter Broomhall from Growcom and Tanya Nagle
from AgForce also did presentations on their journeys
and how they have, and continue to benefit from, the
Agricultural Industries locally and internationally plus the vast
opportunities for travel throughout Australia and the world
that can be achieved through the Agricultural industry.
This program was instigated by Lockyer Valley BEST and
facilitated in a collaborative effort on behalf of the Lockyer
Valley BEST Group members and Lisa Claessen, and was
supported by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and
Forestry.
