This is primarily based on how the cohort of Year 12 students approach their final term of schooling. Some burst out of the gate, striving towards achieving their best possible results across the final few weeks, whereas some appear more focussed on their post schooling plans already. This latter pondering often sees students vary in their hopes and dreams. Some are primed and ready to tackle the world and make their mark, whilst others seem a little less sure how they’re going to adjust to this new world of adulthood and responsibility. Often the students who are most concerned about their future plans base their worries on either their poor academic results or having studied the wrong subjects across Years 11 and 12. True, these can be important things to consider when applying for certain university courses or employment opportunities; however, they are only a couple of the many things in life to worry about. I don’t say this to alarm, as some people might perceive this as a daunting half glass emptied view of the world, but this could not be further from my point. What I want to highlight is yes there are things to be concerned about in the world; however, the likes of what results you achieve and whether you receive your first university offer does not matter in the grand scheme of things – i.e. life. Yes, they might be important for a short period of time; however, they won’t define whether you’re happy or successful in your lifetime. Year 12 students needs to remember that they’re not only graduating from school with their final academic results, but more importantly, they’re also graduating with 12 years of social and emotional learning. Schools are holistic learning hubs where students learn keys skills and abilities beyond the classroom. Take a student who studies wholeheartedly and solely focuses their time and energy towards achieving the best possible academic results. Sure, they might ‘achieve’ and be successful in their university or employment pursuits; however, I’d equally attest that a student who does their best at their studies whilst also involving themself in a number of co-curricular or community based activities would experience at least a similar richness in learning – just a different type of learning through a greater range experiences. My comment here isn’t to stir debate about what’s the right amount a student should study or involve themself in co-curricular activities; instead, I highlight this for students currently worried about their school results and/or post schooling plans, so that they can realise their academic results won’t determine their ability to transition to the adult world – whether in a workplace or study capacity. The other thing I’d like to remind not just Year 12 students, but all Faith students, are of the many important learning experiences and activities they’ve likely participated in whilst at our College, all of which are filled with incredible learning that will undoubtedly influence them later in life. Whether these were through words shared during a Care Group devotion or Chapel service, perhaps even whilst being involved in a fundraising initiative, or simply by participating in one of the many community events we share here at Faith like the Fair, these experiences combined create a tapestry of rich learning. Through these years of experiences, you should have almost unbridled confidence in the steps you take post school. Remember these experiences, not simply the final academic results you receive, will likely be the greatest ingredient and determining factor whether your adult life has the greatest meaning and success. Best of luck to not only this year’s graduating cohort, but all students as they journey towards post schooling life. Life isn’t solely measured by the results you achieve in school, nor the subjects you studied. What’s important is that you continue to be a learner and take each moment as another chance to learn and make new meaning of the world. Whether your school results enable you to enact your post schooling plans immediately or not, know that there will be many other important experiences across your lives which you’ll be able to draw upon and use to improve your contributions to our world. “May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.” Psalm 20:4 Tyson Kenny Deputy Principal Home Faith Lutheran College Date Claimers • Saturday 18 October High Tea for Sarah Laidley Cultural Centre • Monday 20 October Friday 24 October Sports Awards Night • Wednesday 29 October Faith’s Got Talent • Friday 31 October World Teachers Day • Monday 3 - Friday 9 November Youth Arts Week Youth Art Exhibition You are invited to attend the Pupil Free Day • Lockyer Valley Enews 2014 Lockyer Valley Youth Art Exhibition at Faith Lutheran College 5 Faith Avenue Plainland QLD 4341 - H Block Amphitheatre - Thursday 6th November Free Workshop Opportunities • Saturday 8 November Lockyer Valley Youth Arts Awards • Monday 10 - Friday 14 November Year 12 Exam Block • Tuesday 11 November Remembrance Day • Wednesday 19 November Year 12 Formal • Thursday 20 November Year 12 Red Frogs Visit Friday 7th & Saturday 8th November Open Exhibition 9am-5pm Gold Coin Donation Free for school students Saturday 8th November GALA NIGHT Commencing at 6pm $25 per person (Artists $10) Canapes, refreshments & entertainment. Enews Faith Lutheran College Undercover Boss One of my favourite shows on TV at the moment is ‘Undercover Boss’. It’s hilarious to watch the CEOs of large corporations, in ridiculous disguises, get down and do the menial jobs their employees do. I currently work in Pastor Reid’s office and it’s great to have his support and inspiration so close at hand. Having Reid there watching me work the whole time would be another thing entirely though! Just thinking about it makes me realise there are plenty of ways I could lift me game! for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ When I think about the Undercover Boss concept a little more I realise that I do have an undercover boss. Jesus is my Undercover Boss. He is God gone Undercover! Wait a minute, that’s not right though. Jesus died thousands years ago. He can’t see or hear or experience my work. He’s up in heaven dancing on clouds and playing harps isn’t he? In Matthew 25:31-36 Jesus tells us: Watching employees cut corners, swear at customers and sabotage the company right in front of their boss is train wreck TV at its finest. Most episodes put a cherry on top by sharing the story of an unsung-hero employee who receives a reward for their unassuming hard work. What if your boss went undercover? What if your CEO, company director, school principal, line manager, or head honcho came to work with you one day? Would it change the way you work? “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did Jesus is our undercover boss. He came down into our world and worked in the muck of our broken world. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and taught the ignorant. But while Jesus has ascended into heaven, he is with us in the form of every person created in his image. Every time we slack off and treat other people like they don’t matter we are neglecting Jesus. Every time we show hospitality, kindness, or mercy we are showing it to the maker of the universe. What would your week like if you decided treated everyone like they we Jesus themselves? Yours in Faith David Browne Home Enews Faith Lutheran College Well Done Touch Teams!
