STEWARDSHIP
"Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and
that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone
destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person;
for the temple of God, which you are, is holy."
1 Corinthians 3: 16-17
Churches and holy waters are a principal part of our
Catholic faith. We enter the church through Baptism,
and as we enter our Catholic churches, we find holy
water to remind us of that Baptism and to prompt us to
remember that we are in a holy place, a place where
we gather as a community, united as the Body of
Christ. We are the stewards of this church, this holy
place where we can disregard the burdens of the world
and join together to receive the life giving waters of the
Word and the Eucharist. Yes, we are the church, but
there is more to it than that. As Paul wrote to the
Ephesians: “In him you are also being built together
into a dwelling place for God.” - See more at: http://

WELCOMED AND VALUED
YOU ARE INVITED TO JOIN US
on Saturday,
November 15th at 10am in the double classroom for a
presentation by Catholic Charities. The topic will be
“Mental Health Basics, Reducing the Stigma.
Understanding Its Impact on Families.”
As a parish family an important first step in supporting
a person with mental illness is to learn more about it and
how it impacts the individual person and their families.
When a person has heart disease, cancer or any number
of illnesses, we pray for them, we support them and their
families, we reach out to them as Christ calls us to do. As
a community of faith we can make a difference in
dispelling the stigmas of mental illness, and educate
ourselves to become a community of support to persons
with mental illness and their families.
Please plan on attending an educational presentation
by Catholic Charities. The topic will be “Mental Health
Basics, Reducing the Stigma. Understanding Its
Impact on Families”, Saturday, November 15th at
10AM. We will gather in the education wing double
classroom. The presentation and Q & A will be about 90
minutes. To learn more about Welcomed and Valued
contact Marta Roper in the parish office 816-979-3154 or
marta@stsabinaparish.org.
FOCUS ON MENTAL ILLNESS
JUSTICE ISSUES
In 1963, when the de-institutionalization of mental
institutions, asylums, and hospitals was mandated, the
local communities that were to provide services never
received the necessary and promised funding, resulting in
hundreds of thousands of patients with no place to go.
This dilemma still exists today: many families are ill
equipped to handle the needs of family members with
mental illness, and many small-scale institutions have
precisely the same terrible conditions decried in 1963.
Community based services are often underfunded,
access to health care may be a continual challenge, and
far too many people with mental illness are on their own,
often homeless or in prison. What steps can our parish
take to advocate for a better system of care for people
with mental illness and their families?

when Christmas shopping this year and support fair trade!
JUSTFAITH—SANCTITIY OF ALL LIFE
The Catholic Church teaches that, as a gift from God,
every human life is sacred from conception to natural
death. This principle of the worth and dignity of all human
life is at the core of Catholic social teaching. The
JustFaith Ministries Sanctity of ALL Life module engages
this teaching and offers extensive action ideas and
activities for all of the life issues, including abortion, in
vitro fertilization, euthanasia and the death penalty. We
are looking to begin this program in January. This
program requires a six week commitment. If you are
interested in participating, please get in touch with Bridget

ADULT FAITH FORMATION
REFLECTION ON THE DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA IN ROME
Today, the Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary
Time for year A is superseded by the feast of the
dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome. The
Basilica of St. John Lateran is the cathedral church of
the Bishop of Rome, who is also the Pope of the
Roman Catholic Church and other churches united to
Rome. Although the Pope resides near the Basilica
of St. Peter and most of the official rituals are
celebrated there, St. John Lateran is the cathedral
church of the diocese of Rome, and as bishop of
Rome, the pope presides over and is attached to this
cathedral church. And, because St. John Lateran is
considered the mother Church of all Roman Catholic
churches throughout the world, its dedication and role
is celebrated as a universal feast in the General
Roman Calendar.
In 312, Constantine, the Roman Emperor, not only
made Christianity acceptable throughout the empire
but also decided to become a Christian.
He
showered the church with many favors, donating
money and buildings to further the mission and
ministry of the church. Constantine donated the
Lateran Palace to the bishop of Rome for his private
residence. Soon a church was built on the grounds
of the palace which Pope Sylvester dedicated on
November 9, 324. It soon became recognized as the
mother church of Rome and of the churches of the
West. It remains so to this day.
The readings for this Sunday highlight the theme of
God’s “dwelling place.” What we celebrate today is
more than just a building which many of us have
never seen. Rather, we celebrate the living reality of
what it means to be church, our identity focused on
the Vatican II image of the church as “the pilgrim
people of God.” As Paul clearly proclaims in the
second reading, we are the church, God’s building,
whose foundation is Christ. He challenges us to
remember that we are God’s temple, and that God’s
Spirit dwells in us. Becoming
ever mindful of that lived
reality helps us become
people who respect our own
bodily holiness, as well as the
holiness of all we encounter.
The first reading from the
prophet Ezekiel speaks of
the Jerusalem temple as the
living
symbol
of
God’s
presence, unifying and giving identity to God’s
people. From God’s temple flows living water which
gives life, nourishes, revives, and heals both the land
and the people. The temple and what flows from it
become the living symbols of how God nourishes and
sustains the people and how they are called to do
that for one another.
John’s gospel reading tells of Jesus’ zeal for
God’s dwelling, that it be a source of life and
nourishment for all. John goes on to speak of Jesus
as the living temple of God, wherein one finds life,
healing and compassion. Jesus manifests that reality
by showing us how to live full human lives in service
to God and others, by being willing to give all, even
one’s life, for the other. Whenever we take on the
mind and heart of Jesus, we make God present,
becoming, through the power of the Spirit, living
temples of God, nourishing and healing all we come
into contact with.
How are you a source of nourishment and healing
for others? This week, think of practical things you
can do to be God’s living presence to others,
especially those in need. Make an effort to be a
source of nourishment and healing to those you
encounter this day.

BIBLE STUDY AND SUNDAY READINGS

Sunday Lectionary Readings. In order to help us all enter
into the Bible through the Sunday readings, we are
offering study sessions that will provide an opportunity to
read, to study background to the readings, and to reflect
on how to apply the readings to our lives. We will gather
on November 9th and November 23rd at 10:30am. All
are welcome. Bring a Bible and a friend. To register for
these sessions, please call Biagio at 816-979-3153.

WELLNESS CENTER
SIMPLE WAYS TO “TURN UP THE
BURN” (INCREASE YOUR METABOLISM)
PART 2
Add dairy to your meal. Calcium is thought to help
improve your muscle-to-fat ratio in two ways: It binds with
fat to reduce the body’s absorption of fat. And any
remaining calcium typically circulates in your
bloodstream, helping to breakdown fat cells.
Think about exercising. Believe it or not, visualizing a
workout can actually trick your body into strengthening
your calorie-zapping muscles: A Cleveland Clinic study
discovered that people who imagined flexing their biceps
15 minutes a day had a 13.5 percent increase in their
strength after three months.
Sip a cup of green tea. This miracle beverage pairs
caffeine with a compound known as EGCG-and together
they create an even greater bump in metabolism than
caffeine alone. Studies also indicate that green tea may
reduce body fat and help trim the waistline.

DELEGATION TO CINQUERA, EL SALVADOR
We have set the dates of January 13-20, 2015 for our
trip to El Salvador. We are planning this trip in
conjunction with Our Lady of the Presentation Parish.
Those traveling will have the opportunity to visit the
communities of Cinquera and San Rafael Cedros,
along with other places of significance within El
Salvador. Many of you had the chance to hear Zulma
speak of her experience and her thankfulness of being
a scholarship student when she visited our parish in
September. We are pleased that Zulma will be our
translator for our delegation when we are in El
Salvador. If you are interested in traveling with this
delegation, please contact Kris as soon as possible.
Those interested should begin application for a
passport now.
25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE JESUIT
MARTYRS OF EL SALVADOR
On November 16, 1989, six Jesuit priests, their
housekeeper and her daughter were murdered at the
University of Central America in San Salvador, El
Salvador. To honor them and to remember this
anniversary, members of our diocese with ties to
communities in El Salvador have planned a prayer
service for the evening of November 13 at 7pm at St.
Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Kansas City. The
Hispanic Choir from St. Sabina will provide music, and
incorporated into the evening will be a presentation by
Mary Pimmel-Freeman, who is an artist who has
completed paintings of the Salvadoran Martyrs. All are
invited to attend.
