In contrast to All Saints Day, which commemorates all who are in heaven, All Souls has been a day to pray for souls in purgatory. They are eligible for heaven, but not yet purified of the results of sin. Prayers and Masses offered this day are to help them through this purification to the fullness of heaven. But if "the souls of the just are in the hand of God," as today's first reading from the book of Wisdom assures us, why would they need our prayers? Won't God help them attain heaven, since Jesus died for their sins? Shouldn't we save our prayers for people still suffering on earth? The answer has more to do with prayer than with the souls of the faithful departed. Let's remember first of all the One to whom we are praying–a loving God who cares for all people, an eternal God who sees past, present, and future. The Apostles' Creed speaks of Jesus' descent into hell (or "the dead"), one meaning of which is that Jesus' death and resurrection brought salvation to those who lived and died before Christ. So the eternal Lord, who is present to people of all times, can apply our prayers to those who have died, while they were still living. Now if that is too mind-bending (or seems to violate temporal causality) there's another way to look at it. Prayer is also good for the one praying. So when we pray for the departed, we open ourselves to God's presence, to God's consolation in our grief, to the transforming power of God's Spirit. We deepen our faith in God's love for us and for our departed friends and family. We can become more loving ourselves and perhaps show that love to those who are still with us. We deepen our trust that in great love God has done whatever was best for our departed friends. Jesus tells us in the Gospel suggested for today (John 6:37-49) that he will not lose anyone, but will raise them up on the last day. Our prayers for the departed can be a way of uniting us with Jesus in our desire that all will share in the Resurrection on the last day. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. Page 4 Sunday, November 2, 2014 “Everyone who believes in the Son will have eternal life and I shall raise him up on the last day.” John 6:37-40 Faith Formation The children will again participate in the Samaritan’s Purse - Operation Christmas Child or Operation Shoebox. They will prepare shoeboxes filled with small toys, toiletries, pencils, small note pads, etc. which will be flown to the Middle East to be presented to children in those war torn areas. Please do not fill with candy or cookies. As always, we ask our parishioners and ministries to participate in this project. The $7.00 shipping fee should accompany each box to defray the cost for Samaritan’s Purse. If you don’t want to pack a shoebox, then you can donate the $7.00 shipping fee; of course, you can do both. We will collect the boxes from now until November 18. They will be picked up for delivery that week to a collection center and be shipped in time for Christmas. Money, metro, phone and gift cards are welcome and will be collected by December 14th so that the gifts arrive in time for Thursday, December 25th! Look for them at the back of the church during the first week of Advent.
