Traditionally the course had included research into the cocoa industry and how chocolate is made, with an emphasis on what “Fair Trade” means and how businesses are set up. This year the students have actually made their own chocolate bars from single origin beans sourced from Peru, Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Ghana via US distributor Chocolate Alchemy. WHAT’S ON AT RSC This week four lucky representatives travelled to Brunswick to meet the former World Champion Chocolatier, Kirsten Tibbals. Known as the “Queen of Chocolate”, Kirsten has competed in the NOVEMBER culinary Olympics (gold medal), World Chocolate Masters and has become a judge of 4th: MELBOURNE CUP DAY international culinary events….including Master Chef. Kirsten spent considerable time perusing the 12 finalists’ entries, and 21st: End of Semester 2 decided that Jay Vosjan 7B had created the most marketable wrapper. Jay’s prizes include an Bookselling Day autographed copy of Kirsten’s new book Chocolate to Savour (RRP $110) and a bar of every 24th: JUMPSTART kind of chocolate we have made this term. We have just seen our Year 12 students finish the formal school year and wish those with exams to come the best of luck. We held the final Year 12 finishing assembly last week. We were entertained by many songs and then speeches from the coordinators Jane Gibson and Drew King. It was wonderful to see off our Year 12 students in such a positive manner. We look forward to seeing our class of 2014 at the Valedictory Dinner in December. My last two articles have congratulated our dance team on their effort to win the region and state award for Wakakirri. Again we have been most pleased to hear that Rosebud Secondary College finished second in the National Awards. This is an extraordinary effort by our performing arts team and in particular Brea Low and Anthea Mackenzie. Well done to the students involved who showed great leadership and ability. The annual senior Art Show was held last week and showcased some brilliant artwork by our talented students. It is a credit to the staff involved who have guided students through the year and put in so much effort to make the event a success. The people's choice award was also selected from this exhibition and we look forward to presenting this at our awards night. On Thursday 16th September, I attended the annual VCAL awards for the region. This was a wonderful event held at the Peninsula Golf Club that recognised this important pathway for many of our students. There were 38 awards presented on the night and the range of achievement was quite extraordinary. I would like to congratulate Abbey Robertson who received an award on the night. The work of our VCAL team this year in implementing "Big Picture Learning" has added real value to the outcomes for students in this program. On Friday 17th September, I had the pleasure of attending my first annual Chaplaincy Dinner at the College. Our long term chaplain Gerhard "Ziggy" Stanszus spoke about his experience overseas while on leave and was very entertaining. Our Food Technology Team and students put in a fantastic job catering for the event and meeting a number of outcomes for their studies. I would like to thank Lynette Hipwell and the Technology Team and students for their work. A big thank you to Liz Lloyd and the Chaplaincy Committee, who organised the event to raise important funds to continue the valuable work of our chaplains in our school. I would like to thank Sue Roberts and the LOTE department who have hosted our two visitors from Universitas Islam Indonesia (Yogyakarta). This is again a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience cultural immersion in their language program. I attended a class this week where I saw demonstrations in music and dance with our Year 10 students. I would like to thank Akhadiyatus Sholihah and Muhammad Mukhlas for participating in this program. Please note that variations to this will not be accepted as outlined when a student enrolls at the College (Non-Negotiables contract). Finance matters 2014 EMA Did you select payment by cheque? If so, we have 2 cheques waiting to be collected from the front office. 2015 EMA The Education Maintenance Allowance has been abolished from 1st January 2015. If you are one of our families who have relied on EMA to assist with school expenses, you should plan to ensure these expenses are budgeted for in 2015. SCHOOLKIDS BONUS - Fantastic News. As many will already be aware, those families who are eligible to receive this bonus will continue to receive this support for education-related costs of primary and secondary schooling after the Senate secured the Schoolkids Bonus until the end of 2016. As the College is moving to a ‘Managed Bring Your Own Device’ program for students entering Years 7 and 10 in 2015 the continuation of the Schoolkids Bonus is well timed in providing some much needed funds for those who wish to direct this assistance to a laptop purchase. The amount payable to a family with secondary school students is $820 in total and generally paid in January, (before school starts), and July. 2015 COLLEGE CHARGES Information about our charges relating to Essential Education Items, Optional Education Items and Voluntary Contributions are available on the College website. This information will also be provided with the 2015 Booklists which were sent home. Also available on the website will be our Parent Payment Policy and our Parent Payment Refund Policy. A copy of each of these policies will also be available in the College foyer. Please contact the Office if you require a hard copy of either policy. PAYING YOUR ESSENTIAL EDUCATION ITEMS The College offers various methods to assist families in making payments towards these items. BPay can also be set up to make regular payments from your account, as well as one off transactions. Various options are; BPAY, CASH, CENTREPAY, CHEQUE, CREDIT CARD & EFTPOS 10% DISCOUNT At its last meeting, School Council approved a 10% discount if 2015 Essential Education Items (excluding VET charges), are paid in full on or before the 15th December 2014. The discount cannot be applied to the VET charges as funds collected are then passed onto the VET provider. BOOKLISTS Students currently in Years 7 - 11 received their 2015 Booklist in the second week of Term 4. These are to be returned no later than Wednesday 5th November. Parents will have to do an on-line order should the booklist not be returned to the office by this date. Campion (previously known as Landmark) will be collecting the booklists on this day. Please note that Campion are no longer in Seaford so a trip to their outlet will require a much longer trip to Dandenong. Dear Parents, In response to parent submissions, College Council in September have agreed to the removal of the date from the Senior School Jumper. This is to facilitate the resale and or passing down of the jumper to others in order to reduce costs for families. The Jumper will still carry the badge of Year 11 and 12. For students purchasing new laptops in 2015 it is recommended that you purchase a new keyed padlock for their locker. These cost $30.00 and will be available to purchase from the front office from Monday 10th November 2014. We have 2 EMA cheques desperately awaiting collection so that they may deposited into their owners bank account. Owners may find these cheques quite beneficial in assisting with the purchase of 2015 textbooks or uniform items that you have just discovered your child has outgrown over the cooler months. If you applied for the EMA and ticked the ‘Cheque” box, please come to the office and collect. Not sure of it relates to you? Students who catered for the Chaplaincy Dinner last Friday 17th October were given a THUMBS UP in the latest Leader Newspaper. Well done!!! HANDS ON LEARNING GETTING INVOLVED IN THE TOOTGAROOK WETLANDS DEVELOPMENTS. On the day of the meeting for the Tootgarook Wetlands (also dress up day for Rosebud Secondary) students from HOL Rosebud Secondary College were joined by HOL students from Eastbourne Primary School, people from the local community and the CoDesign team to work on concepts to improve the Wetland experience. We met up with a person called Cam from ‘Friends of Tootgarook Wetlands’, and he walked us through the wetlands and explained the plants and wildlife to us. Rosebud HOL students were put into four small groups with at least one HOL student from Eastbourne. The students were given three red stickers each to vote on project ideas for the wetlands. The four most popular ideas were a Look-Out Tower, a Lizard Statue, Totem Poles, and an Aboriginal painting or mural. Each group was assigned an idea to work on, my table had the assignment of Totem Poles. There were many different ideas for these, including a food chain totem pole with animals, natural plants growing on one, in the end we decided on a combination of two poles was decided upon, we also discussed colours and sizes. After a certain amount of time each table had to present their ideas to the other groups, and then everyone was welcome to give feedback and share their own thoughts. The CoDesign team took all ideas, and tried to make them work together. The project is now underway. Taleah Stewart HOL Year 8. The whole group on the day. In 2015 students will be completing their work experience in the week Monday 16th March to Friday 20th March. The following key points need to be emphasised. Students are required to find their own placements. The school holidays would be a good opportunity for this. Parents should offer assistance and the Careers Pathway Office will also offer guidance and ideas to help students start on their search for a work experience placement to suit their interests and/ goals for the future. The normal payment rate for work experience is $5 a day, however Government organisations like schools and hospitals do not pay students for Work Experience. Please note Work Experience is really not about the money, it is about gaining an insight into the world of work. Work Cover and liability insurance are covered by the State Government An A5 white Work Experience Slip with details of the student and employer should be filled in once a work experience placement has been tentatively organised, and returned to the Careers Office no later than Friday 6th February, 2015. Before the end of the 2014 school year would be even better. Final documents can then be completed at school and the legal Work Experience Arrangement form given to the student for completion. This document is critical and MUST be signed by the student, parent, employer and Principal before a student can start work. If students are planning to undertake work experience on a construction site (building, landscaping, electrical, tiling) then students MUST complete the CIC (Construction Induction Card) This is law under the Work Safe Legislation. More information on options to complete the White Card will be provided during Jumpstart. All students will be undertaking a preparation module during L4L in Term 4 2014 to help prepare them for organising Work Experience and completing the necessary Safe @ work OHS modules. The benefits to the College are significant, as it is vital to bring funding into a school in order to plan to add value to the regular programs. Tuesday 25th November 7:00pm Southern Peninsula Arts Centre - College Theatre 245 Eastbourne Rd, Rosebud FEATURING:~ College Concert Band ~ String Ensemble ~ Small Woodwind and Brass Ensembles ~ Soul Band ALL WELCOME ~ FREE ADMISSION INTERMEDIATE BASKETBALL The Intermediate Basketball team played off in the Southern Metro Region Championships at the Dandenong Stadium last week. Although narrowly beaten in both games, the boys could come away with heads held high, as the losses in both games were honourable. The team shot over 40 points in both the Frankston game and the McKinnon game and lost each by only a handful of points. Ben James and Josh Searle shot well from the perimeter as well as giving great drive through the key. Chris Jones and Fraser Spencer rebounded well and gave great big man presence. Brendan Robertson, Jarrod Robertson and Bailey Behrens linked well and all played solid games. Campbell Hustwaite (Year 8) did not let his size or years daunt him, as he played the guard position with aplomb. A great effort by all the boys to reach this level of competition and be able to play so well. The success of this team in addition to that of the Year 8’s makes for a strong team again next year. Pat Egan INTERSCHOOL SPORT PARTICIPATION FEE - $25.00 The College is very supportive of our students’ participation in Interschool Sport, believing that this broadens their social and learning experiences. The Interschool Sport Program is expensive to run due to the ever increasing costs of buses, equipment and casual relief teachers. As this program is one of our optional extras, the costs of participating in it are required to be met by parents/guardians. The contribution required to pay is $25.00 for the year. This goes towards helping to cover some of the costs of running the program. If you would like to discuss any details about this program please feel free to call Vicki at the College on 5986 8595. ~ ~ A significant focus has been put on further strengthening our approach to the mental wellbeing of all at the college this year, possibly too much to cover just here but to keep you informed these are a few of the key elements. A committee has been formed representing Rosebud Secondary College and the Rotary Club of Rosebud and Rye, to advance planning towards establishing a purpose built “Empowerment Centre” on site at the College. The broad plan aims to build a quality, purpose-built facility to better promote optimal personal and academic development and achievement for the students of Rosebud Secondary College, and the wider school community. We seek to strengthen students’ social and emotional capacity, their learning-confidence and self-efficacy; and to better equip them with the necessary personal skills and resources to not only cope with and manage the various stressors of adolescence, but to flourish and lead rich, full and meaningful lives. This proposal acknowledges the evidence that suggests that the elements of social and emotional wellbeing and development are integral rather than incidental to learning. That the Learner will find it difficult to engage with learning programs if they are distracted by significant physical, social and emotional issues. The project has the endorsement and support of the Hon. Martin Dixon (MP) and Mayor, Antonella Celi. At the recent annual Chaplaincy dinner, we were delighted when Martin Dixon announced a pre-election pledge of $50,000 towards the project, as further evidence of his support and recognition of the value of such a facility for our college. We have brought in expert advice to look at siting and concept planning from which to springboard a major push towards funding via grants and potential donations. It is a major project, and with the backing of your College Council, local and State government representatives we look forward to reporting on progress. Recent events conducted at the College have added to the fabric of daily life in the College, and these include the end of Term “Harmony Day”, “RUOK Day” and the local “Colour for Life” group running a BBQ for the entire school last week. Wellbeing features prominently in the curriculum, and the Year 7 students are nearing the completion of the “Eye Belong” project. This involves every Year 7 student creating their self-portrait as a mosaic, which will then be curated onto large panels for mounting within the Year 7 centre. This will establish a permanent visual reference, and make a tangible “belonging” link for each of the students. We will repeat the process with each incoming year of Year 7 students.
