The virus spreads between humans by contact with body fluids — such as blood, urine and sweat — or through objects that have been contaminated with infected fluids, like needles. Ebola can’t be spread through air, food or water. The only way to get it is to be in direct contact with someone who is experiencing symptoms. Ebola poses no significant risk in the United States. York General Health Care Services is strictly following the Center for Disease Control’s guidelines and recommendations for this virus. A plan is in place to handle any situation in the highly unlikely circumstance of an outbreak. For further information about Ebola, visit www.cdc.gov.Adapted from www.cdc.gov November is Diabetes Month Diabetes: if you don’t live with it yourself, then it’s likely you have a family member or friend who does, as Diabetes affects 26 million Americans, with 7 million of those undiagnosed. An estimated 79 million American adults aged 20 years or older have prediabetes. What is diabetes? Diabetes is a disease where blood glucose levels are above normal. Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose, or sugar, for our bodies to use for energy. The pancreas, an organ that lies near the stomach, makes a hormone called insulin to help glucose get into the cells of our bodies. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use its own insulin as well as it should. This causes sugar to build up in your blood. Prediabetes is an elevated blood glucose level that is not quite high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes, but is higher than normal. One in three American adults has prediabetes, and most do not even know they have it. Many people with prediabetes who do not lose weight or do moderate physical activity will develop diabetes within 3 years. Diabetes can cause serious health complications including heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and amputations of the foot, toe or leg and is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. Addition Nears Completion York General Health Care Services is busy preparing for new residents as the 10-room addition to Willow Brook Assisted Living is set to open this month. I know they will enjoy the facility and the great care our staff provides.” Rhonda Koehn, Willow Brook Administrator agreed. Koehn added “Staff is looking forward to our new residents. I am sure they will feel right at home here.” You are at increased risk for developing prediabetes/diabetes if you: • Are 45 years of age or older. • Are overweight. • Have a family history of diabetes. • Are physically active fewer than three times per week. • Gave birth to a baby that weighed more than 9 pounds. • Ever had gestational diabetes York General Willow Brook Assisted Living is designed to support independence and socialization and provides an attractive option for persons needing or wanting to change their living arrangements.
