At around 8:10 pm on November 9, the Chetwynd Fire Department responded to a call
of hydro wires down at the intersection of Nicholson and the North Access Roads by
KFC.
Upon attending to the scene, a coal truck was found to have its box extended, with
hydro wires wrapped around the box. RCMP members were also in attendance at the

station at the intersection of Highways 97 and 29, one and half kilometers from the
initial scene. Hydro wires behind the Petro-Canada had also been severed by the coal
truck, along with three hydro poles as the

FOODIE FRIDAY: FREEZER-FRIENDLY MEALS
Fall is a busy time with kids returning to school, sports and team activities starting up, and winter to prepare for – think snow tires and
shovelling. When it starts to get cooler outside, our bodies often desire a hearty and hot meal. But how do we feed our desire for this warm and
nourishing meal when we are strapped for time? Instead of reaching for the phone to order an expensive and less-than-healthy meal, reach
into the freezer! There are many recipes that can be eaten hot from the oven or stove that also create tasty leftovers. These can be packaged up
and frozen for a convenient meal solution for future busy times.
I like to freeze leftovers like the Hearty Lentil Soup recipe below. This is a complete meal in one dish that can be easily reheated on a busy
evening. Carrots, celery, onions, and tomatoes cover your vegetable requirement, lentils pack a punch with plenty of protein and fibre,
farmer’s sausage adds even more protein, and I add bacon because it’s just so darn tasty! In one serving (1/8 of the recipe) of this soup, the
lentils alone provide 17 grams of protein and 11 grams of fibre. Getting enough protein is important so that our bodies can build and repair
our hardworking muscles, especially after we use them to shovel the driveway! Aside from all of the numbers, this soup will fill your belly,
nourish your body, and just simply make you feel cozy on a cold fall or winter night.
The recipe below has been adapted from Flavour First, a cookbook written by my dietitian idol, Mary Sue Waisman.
Hearty Lentil Soup Serves 6-8
Ingredients:
• ½ pound (~4-5 strips) bacon, chopped into ½ inch cubes • 1 cup farmer’s or Kielbasa sausage, coarsely chopped
• 1 cup onion, finely diced • 1 cup carrots, finely diced • 1 cup celery, finely diced • 4 garlic cloves, minced
• 8 cups chicken broth or stock • 19 ounce (540 ml) can diced tomatoes • 1 cup parsley,
coarsely chopped • 1 tsp salt
Chetwynd Social Planning Society
• 1 pound (500 g) dry green or red lentils, rinsed well • 2 tsp dried oregano • 1 tsp freshly
ground black pepper
Instructions:
1. Heat a large pot or Dutch oven over medium high heat. Add the bacon to cook. Stir often
to be sure the bacon doesn’t become crisp. Cook for about 3 minutes to render some of the
fat and then add sausage, onions, carrots, celery, and garlic. Cook and stir for 5-8 minutes
until vegetables are tender and translucent but not browned.
2. Add chicken broth or stock, tomatoes, lentils, parsley, oregano, salt, and pepper. Stir well
and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook until lentils are soft, about 30-40 minutes.
3. Taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper.

NEW ONLINE TOOL LAUNCHED TO MATCH BC APPRENTICES
AND LOCAL EMPLOYER SPONSORS
The Industry Training Authority (ITA) and WorkBC today launched a new innovative online Apprentice Job Match tool which will better connect local
apprentices looking for on-the-job training they need to boost their skills and achieve certification in their chosen trade.
The launch of this new tool is well-timed with the provincial government proclaiming November 7, 2014, as BC’s inaugural “Apprenticeship Recognition Day”.
This day will help raise awareness of the importance of developing a highly trained and skilled workforce for key sectors of BC’s growing economy where skilled
trades are needed.
The online Apprentice Job Match tool is located on WorkBC’s website which has over 20,000 visitors daily and 10,000 job postings. Finding an employer
sponsor is one of the biggest hurdles to a successful apprenticeship. With over 37,000 registered apprentices in BC, and over 9,400 employer sponsors, the need to
connect apprentices to local employers is greater than ever.
The Apprentice Job Match tool was launched locally today at Northern Lights College (NLC), where Foundation program students, local employers, and other
industry stakeholders joined ITA to learn more about how the tool works, and how it can assist them in their job or apprentice search.
“Helping apprentices find employer sponsors is critical to improving apprenticeship completion rates and ensuring industry has the skilled labour it needs to take
advantage of our growing economy,” says Minister Shirley Bond, Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Minister Responsible for Labour.
“Through our Skills for Jobs Blueprint, we committed to improving the way we connect apprentices and employers, and the Apprentice Job Match tool is
providing an easy and accessible way to do exactly that.”
“Northern Lights College is pleased that its students will be able to make good use of the Apprentice Job Match tool,” says Rene Tremblay, Dean of Trades
and Apprenticeships, NLC. “It’s a great way to connect local employers with our apprentices and speed up the process of building solid careers in the Trades.”
“Apprentice Job Match tool is a great idea because it opens up the employment pool for industry,” says Feron Young from Murray GM.
“This tool will be helpful for apprentices who are looking to get into industry,” says Ramic Southwick, Northern Lights College Automotive Service
Technician Foundation Student.
By 2022, there are expected to be one million job openings in British Columbia. These job openings will be created by major new opportunities, including
expanding liquefied natural gas (LNG), new mines and mining expansions, expanding shipbuilding, growing forestry exports, and increased activity in
transportation. ITA is committed to building a skilled workforce to help ensure that British Columbians have the skills they need to be first in line for the many
opportunities coming our way across the province.
“Our government is working to ensure British Columbians have the skills they need to be first in line for these jobs. The Apprentice Job Match tool will better
connect British Columbian apprentices looking for on-the-job training they need to boost their skills and achieve certification in their chosen trade,” says Peace
River North MLA, Pat Pimm.
“Employers are an essential component of any apprenticeship as 80% of an apprentice's journey is spent in practical training under the guidance of the employer,”
says Gary Herman, ITA CEO. “It can be challenging for young apprentices, especially those just starting out, to find employment, so the online Apprentice Job
Match tool is an invaluable resource for them, as well as employer sponsors looking to hire apprentices.”
The Introduction of the Apprentice Job Match tool is part of ITA's increased efforts to better support apprentices through the apprenticeship pathway and to
increase continuation and completion rates across the province. It also delivers on recommendations outlined in B.C.’s Skills for Jobs Blueprint: Re-engineering
Education and Training and the McDonald Report.
Want to learn more about Apprentice Job Match? ITA is hosting a webinar on November 12, 2014, to take BC apprentices and employers through the online job
match process step-by-step: http://www.itabc.ca/events/apprentice-job-match-webinar.
