BLUE FUEL ENERGY OPEN HOUSE
On Thursday, February 19th, the Blue Fuel energy open house was held at the Cottonwood Hall in
the Chetwynd District Rec Center to a public audience of almost 150 people.
The two presenters and speakers at this open house were Juergen Puetter, C.E.O of Blue Energy,
and Micheal MacDonald, president of the company. Puetter spoke first regarding the general
overview of Blue Energy’s intentions, as well as the plans they have for the future here in the
Peace. To begin, The Peace Region is rich in natural gas, and the traditional method at the moment
would be to turn that into LNG for production, or transport port it to a Methanol plant. At the
moment, there isn’t enough resources to do so profitably and ethically without a pipeline, however
a new plan was proposed. Since the Peace Region’s energy is 93% renewable, they want to use this
great resource to process methanol and Natural Gas into Gasoline for fuel. This gasoline would
also be very low in Carbon Intensity due to the process, which would exactly suit the needs of a
new regulation for the Carbon Intensity taking effect in B.C. in 2020. This project is one of the first
of it’s kind in the world. Micheal Macdonald began to continue from their, outlining the projects
goals. Blue Fuel Energy wants to create the cleanest fuel of it’s kind, with the ability to add and use
Renewable Resources as they become available.
Macdonald outlined a few point for why they decided on Canada, and specifically Chetwynd for
this project. B.C. has abudent resources, along with the 93% renewable energy rate. However
Western Canada is being pushed out of the U.S. gas market, and at the moment, the low gas prices
and high oil prices create a very unique opportunity. Chetwynd would be a hub, as there is lots of
electricity available here, as well as plenty of Raw materials to be taking from.
The Core process of the Blue Fuel Energy is different because they integrate electricity into
making the fuel, rather than using more natural resources. This process also generates a lot of heat,
which instead of just wasting, they plan to use to power greenhouses in the winter in the area,
another green benefit to the plan. The carbon emissions from both the process of creating the fuel,
and burning the fuel itself is much lower with this type of facility than the typical LNG plant. The
timeline is as follows:
In 2014, they spent the year finalizing the process design. Over this year, they are planning out the
engineering, deciding on gas providers, and raising support and investments for the project. Over
the next three years construction would take place, with commissioning and operation beginning
as early as 2019.
Great beef deserves some great sidekicks.
What’s better than a delicious Mama Burger? One paired
with Russet thick-cut fries and our famous A&W Root
Beer. And like every burger we serve, the Mama is made
with beef raised without the use of hormones or steroids.
For just $5, it’s one tasty deal, guaranteed.

BLUE FUEL ENERGY
OPEN HOUSE
Continued from front page
Both Macdonald and Puetter emphasized the longterm benefits of this project. This will be one of the
greenest fuel plants on the globe, as the goal is
minimizing the environmental impact, while still
being sustainable. Because of this extensive
process, it would require 5x the work force as a
regular LNG plant, an estimate of almost 150
people would be needed to man the plant. This
project would also be entirely independent from
the Site C dam. This presentation had raised a few
questions.
Mayor Merlin Nichols asked about the differences
from this plants process compared to a typical
LNG plant. The biggest difference with Blue Fuel
Energy is that the gas is undergoing a chemical
change compared to a physical one. It’s also much
more efficient due to integrating electricity into
the process as opposed to consuming additional
raw materials. The site would also be a modest
size, about 1,000 sq feet, reducing it’s footprint on
the environment. Community member Charlie
Lasser had concerns on how the site would affect
the surrounding water supply. This was also a
concern of other civilians.

MAKE SURE YOUR SPORTS DRINK IS HYDRATING YOU
(NC) Most people are blissfully unaware of the high levels of sugar they are consuming in
sports drinks. Paying closer attention to labels reveals that many branded sports drinks
contain four times the amount of sugar that is required for effective rehydration. High levels
of sugar in the diet can contribute to a variety of health conditions.
Any person who exercises on a regular basis is susceptible to the effects of even mild fluid
and electrolyte loss through sweat. Dehydration occurs when the body loses water and
electrolytes faster than they are being replaced.
Common signs of dehydration related to exercise include:
- Dry mouth - Increased thirst - Lack of concentration - Muscle cramps - Fatigue
To allow the body to perform at an optimal level it is important to maintain a healthy fluid
balance at all times.
According to senior pharmacist Colleen Brady, “It can often be confusing selecting the right
product to replace fluids and the electrolytes lost through sweat during physical activity. It is
critical to select a hydration product that doesn't interfere with performance or hinder weight
loss goals.”
So just how much sugar are we consuming in sports drinks?
Brady explains: “The typical sports drink contains between 6 to 8% sugar, so for an active
Canadian exercising 3 times a week, drinking a 600 ml sports drink per session is equivalent
to around 18 pieces of chocolate, or up to 570 calories. If you wouldn't eat it, why drink it?”
Instead, look for oral rehydration solutions. When compared to standard sports drinks, oral
rehydration solutions like Hydralyte, contain approximately one quarter of the sugar and
four times the electrolytes.
In other words, sugar-free sports drinks will not provide effective rehydration, Brady points
out. “The optimum sugar in a rehydration formula (2%) is critical for rapid rehydration, as
this accelerates the absorption of both fluid and electrolytes. Hydralyte, in particular,
complies with the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines and contains the correct
balance of sugar (2%) and electrolytes for both rapid and effective rehydration. It is sold at
leading pharmacies in Canada.”

SPRING IS ON ITS WAY, AND WITH THAT COMES DAFFODILS!
Fresh cut Daffodils from Vancouver Island will be arriving in Chetwynd March 19, 2015. Pre-order
forms will be faxed out to local businesses soon so watch for them. Be sure to get your order in as the
Daffodils are limited and we don't want you to miss out. Each year our colourful “Daffodil Boots”
sell out very quickly.
Do you have a couple of hours to spare? Are you new in town and want to meet new friends or have a
friend that you would like to spend a couple hours with? Well this is a great opportunity for just that
and we would be happy to have you. New faces and new energy are most welcome.
We are looking for volunteers for March 19 - March 25, 2015. Please consider coming out and joining our
enthusiastic group of volunteers.
Tables will be set up for sales of Daffodil bunches and beautiful arrangements either in vases or our “unique”
rubber boots at Chetwynd IGA and Super Valu. If you are interested please contact Loni at 250-788-2842
(evenings) or 250 788-5320 (days).
April 1 is the start of our annual Daffodil Pin Campaign. Pins will be available in various locations in our
community. Be sure to pick up a pin and wear for the month of April to show your support for people who
have been affected by cancer and to remember those we have lost. Together we can make a difference. Please
contact Loni 250-788-5320 for more info.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THE HISTORY OF THE DAFFODIL
It all began over a cup of tea. In 1954,
daffodils were used to decorate tables at a
fundraising tea hosted by Lady Eaton in
downtown Toronto. More than 700 women
attended the event, which raised money for
the Canadian Cancer Society. The bright
and cheerful blooms proved to be so
popular that Society volunteers realized
they could raise funds and awareness by selling the
flowers. The sale of fresh-cut bunches quickly became
a popular annual tradition of the Society and has since
blossomed into Daffodil Month. The Daffodil
Campaign is primarily a fundraising campaign, but it
also raises awareness of our support programs.
In 2000, the Canadian Cancer Society adopted the
daffodil as our official logo. For many, the vibrant
springtime flower has come to symbolize brightness
and hope in the fight against all cancers – of which
there are more than 200 different types.
It’s all how you look at things...Oliver Wendell Holmes once attended a meeting in which he was the
shortest man present. "Dr. Holmes," quipped a friend, "I should think you'd feel rather small among
us big fellows." "I do," retorted Holmes, "I feel like a dime among a lot of pennies."
WEEKLY HOROSCOPE
ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20)Be careful not to confuse issues when
discussing the matters at hand. Put your efforts into your work or money
making ventures rather than your emotional life. Pleasure trips will be
favorable and bring about romance. However, you may not attract the
kind of interest you had in mind. Your lucky day this week will be
Saturday.
TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21)Stress coupled with diet will add to stomach
problems. Your intellectual charm will win hearts and bring
opportunities that you least expect. Your ability to help others will win
you points. Move forward if you want to turn your life around. Your
lucky day this week will be Sunday.
GEMINI (May 22-June 21)Sudden changes regarding friendships are
likely to occur if you have tried to change others. You will find it easy
finalizing personal papers if you make an effort. Don't expect anything
for nothing and you won't be disappointed. Unexpected events may be
upsetting. Your lucky day this week will be Tuesday.
CANCER (June 22-July 22)Your mate could get on your nerves if he or
she backs you into an emotional corner or puts restrictions on your time.
You may want to make changes that will turn your entertainment room
into a real family affair. Expressing yourself in novel ways should lead
you down new avenues. If you have to deal with large institutions, be
careful not to make waves. Your lucky day this week will be Sunday.
LEO (July 23-Aug 22)Someone you live with will be quite unreasonable
this week. Curl up with a good book or go for a drive in the country.
Residential moves will be hectic and may be unsatisfactory. Be
diplomatic and honest, and that person will only be made to look bad.
Your lucky day this week will be Wednesday.
VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23)Avoid lending or borrowing. Put your
thoughts on paper. Don't overextend yourself in order to add luxury items
to your entertainment center. You will meet new and exciting people if
support and affection. Your lucky day this week will be Saturday.
PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20)Reciprocate by offering helpful hints. You
can find solutions if you are willing to communicate. You may want
confidence in yourself. False information is likely if you listen to idle
chatter or gossip. Your lucky day this week will be Sunday.
(NC) Did you know that the vaccine
currently being used to fight the ebola
virus was developed using plant
biotechnology? An American company
called Kentucky BioProcessing is
using tobacco plants to create valuable
proteins used in developing a vaccine
for the deadly disease.
This process of using plants to create
medicines, or “pharming”, has seen a
significant increase over the past 10
years. While no commercial plantmade medicines are currently available
in Canada, there are several research
products underway under the close
supervision of the Canada Food
Inspection Agency.
For several decades, farmed crops have
been genetically engineered to resist
disease and insects and to require less
inputs. Because these food products
have an excellent safety record,
pharmaceutical researchers are
interested in using the same
technologies in an innovative new
approach to health care.
