RCMP CONTINUE FIGHT AGAINST
PEACE REGION DRUG TRADE
Fort St. John RCMP also continue to combat the increase of fentanyl pills being sold on the
street – most recently seizing over 2,800 capsules.
On February 12, search warrants executed at three residences produced half a kilogram of
cocaine, over 2,800 fentanyl capsules, approximately $20,000 in cash, a .22 caliber pistol with
a loaded magazine, a carbine 9 mm with a 10 round magazine, a 12 gauge shotgun, a 30.06 bolt
action rifle, a flare gun, a 7.62 semiautomatic rifle and a prohibited rifle magazine.
Fort St. John Mayor Lori Ackerman was concerned about the find in a residential area, adding
that she had some concern about the province’s judicial system being a revolving door. The
revolving door is reflective of a suspect connected to the recent drug bust, as the same resident
is facing similar charges, still not proven in court, dating back to December 2013.
Dana Andrew Nazarek, a 43-year-old Fort St. John resident, is being charged with one count
possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, one count possession of fentanyl for the
purpose of trafficking, and one count of breach of an undertaking. Nazarek remains in custody
and will face a judge on March 18, 2015.
Jason James Summer, a 44-year-old Fort St. John resident, is being charged with three counts
possession of a firearm knowing its unauthorized and one count unauthorized possession of a
prohibited or restricted weapon. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 22, 2015.
Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opiate that is similar but 80 – 100 times more potent than
morphine, and many times more potent than heroin – typically used to treat patients with
severe pain.
On the street, dealers often market fentanyl pills as oxycontin, according to Cpl. Jodi Shelkie
with the Fort St. John RCMP.
In 2013 there were three overdoses involving fentanyl reported to the local RCMP. One year
later, that number jumped to nine overdoses – four of which were fatal.
Employment Opportunities: Apply online at www.aw.ca
The BC Coroner’s Service found that around 25% of fatal overdose deaths last year involved
Fentanyl in some way, shape, or form.

5 Reasons Why Letter
Writing is Making a
Comeback
(NC) In a world where the majority of
our communication takes place in short
bursts over text, email, or in 140
characters over social media, the power
of the written word is becoming a
priceless virtue. Instant communication
has lessened the impact of individual
messages, creating a craving for
personalized forms of expression.
There is something impressive about
receiving a handwritten letter. Here's
why:
1. It's thoughtful. You know when you
receive a letter in the mail that someone
has put thought and effort into sending it
out. The absence of spell check or cut and
paste will force you to consider what you
really want to say. This offers a great
personal touch and can show someone
that you really care.
2. It's fun! With endless options of
personalized stationery, elegant pens,
tailored labels and unique postcards, it's
easy to get excited about writing letters.
Exploring stationery accessories and
writing personalized greeting cards or
birthday messages can be a fun do it
yourself project.
3. It can make a difference. Picking up a
pen and paper can change the lives of
people across the world. Amnesty
International campaigns in many ways,
but when the immediate safety of
someone is at risk, the method of choice is
a global network of letter writers.
Amnesty's Urgent Action Network
members stand by ready to send letters
to authorities around the world for
individuals at risk of abuses like torture,
imminent execution or unlawful arrest.
To learn more about the Urgent Action
Network, visit www.amnesty.ca/getinvoved/urgent-action-network
4. It's nostalgic. Though we love the
speed and ease of sending a text message
or email, hand written notes have
permanence. Looking back at a note to
an old friend or a message from a family
member reinvigorates past memories
and has a tangible and enduring quality
that allows the message to live on forever.
5. It's unique. A simple hand written note
after a job interview can set you apart
from other candidates. When an
employer receives a hand written letter,
they know that the applicant took the
time to create a personalized message
just for them. To a potential employer,
this is a physical reminder of your
interest in them or the company.

MEET THE MAYOR
Ethical municipal government is solidly
rooted in the core values that drive the
decisions we make as individuals and as
members of Council. Deeper even than the
core values of Council lie the core values of
the community. Core community values
inevitably inform the values of members of
Council because we are all elected by the
community and, as Council, represent public
opinion. However, when I am walking down
the street or shopping locally, I do not
represent public opinion although my values
have not changed from the moment I left the
Mayor's chair in Council chambers. We all
have to identify our core values – an
especially crucial exercise for decision
makers in public office. Without that
identification we are in danger of blundering
randomly through the days of our lives
without being sure why we do or don't. That's
an unhealthy circumstance and usually quite
unproductive. You, the voters, certainly don't
want your Mayor and Council behaving
randomly.
As Mayor and Council, elected to govern the
District of Chetwynd, we would be
unproductive in our elected roles if we failed
to rearticulate our core values from time to
time. It's natural to forget and to get so bound
up in daily routine that the clear vision of core
values fades away. Chetwynd Council is
committed to remembering the values for
which we stand and the time is approaching
for us to engage in the annual rite of
remembering and setting direction for the
next year.

the core values I have adopted and maintained.
Understanding our core values as a Council and

Let me illustrate: if two of the values informing
the way I behave toward others include respect Shelly’s Pooch Parlour

Additionally, I will try to build a Council ethos

that reflects this attitude.
Suppose I espouse justice and loyalty. Will I not Residential & Commercial Construction

When you elected me back in 2011 I had a Phone: 250-788-3223

GIANTS VS LUMBERJACKS FINAL
The Chetwynd Midget Giants were victorious over the Dawson Creek
Midget Rep Canucks on Saturday, February 28, 2015.
The Giants who had handily secured top spot with 29 points in the
regular season with a 13 win / 2 loss / 3 tie record were matched up to play
the 4th place Canucks in Round #1 of APHL Playoffs.
Both teams came away with a point each in the home & home series after
game one resulted in a 4 to 4 tie at the Encanca Events Centre in Dawson
Creek. Game two was a must win situation with the loser being
eliminated and the winner advancing to the final playoff round.
Giants Captain Liam Beattie led the way scoring the first goal of the
game unassisted at the midway point of the first period. Canucks Captain
Chase Henrickson tied the game at one each before the period ended.
Henrickson gave Dawson an early lead scoring in the 2nd period but less
than a minute later Beattie tied the game back up netting another
unassisted goal. Canucks Blake Wilson marked one and gave Dawson
the go-ahead goal only to be answered back by the Giants when Griffin
Young scored to end the 2nd period in a 3 to 3 tie.
Chetwynd got the jump on Dawson with an unassisted goal from Colton
Golder halfway into the 3rd period and the home team protected their
lead with some great net-minding from goalie Kyle Eckel. With time
running out and two minutes left to play the Canucks pulled their goalie
to get the extra man on in effort to tie the game and force an overtime
period. The Giants displayed some great defensive skills to keep the
Canucks at bay and Chetwynd sealed the deal with a 5 to 3 game win on a
empty-net goal by Brandon Howard.
Chetwynd Midget Giants advanced to the final "A" Banner Round to
playoff against LaCrete Midget Lumberjacks to determine the APHL
Midget Tier 1 Champions. The puck drops this evening, Friday night at
6:30 pm in LaCrete, Alberta, for game one of the home & home series.
The final championship game will be played on home ice for the Giants
this Sunday, March 8th at 11:15 am at the Chetwynd Rec Centre.
