Van Schedule
Aquatic Exercise Class
Aquatic Exercise is taught at the Madison Swim
Academy located at the Kindred Hearts
Retirement Facility in Sun Prairie. The class,
“Gentle Water Exercise for Seniors,” is from
10:10 –11:00 a.m. and held in a warm 90
degree pool. The water‘s buoyancy and
resistance increases your range of motion. The
water offers your body support, to improve
flexibility, and to experience a full range of
motion. Aquatic exercise emphasizes flexibility,
balance, and coordination. It also builds
endurance and is a non-impact form of exercise.
The van can provide transportation Monday and
Friday mornings. Please sign up in advance.
Class prices are $5 per class or $45 for a 10class punch pass, including optional open swim
and use of a hot tub. You are welcome to join
this fitness class and receive the benefits of
warm water in a group setting. For additional
information on classes offered at Madison Swim

Carrots, beets, and broccoli are fiber-rich. Collard
greens and Swiss chard have 4 grams of fiber per cup. Linda’s Rice Dish
Spinach also packs a punch at 7 grams of fiber per half- 1 lb. hamburger
cup. Artichokes are among the highest-fiber veggies, at ½ cup uncooked rice

a good choice for your shopping cart: garbanzo, kidney,
lima, or pinto beans. They make great soups and
chilies, and are a flavorful addition to salads. Beans are
also high in protein, so if you’re cutting back on red
meat, they’re a healthy, filling substitute.
Include other legumes. Peas, soybeans (edamame),
and lentils are also high in fiber.
Check cereal labels. Most cereals have at least some
fiber content, but they’re not all created equal. Any
cereal with 5 or more grams of fiber per serving is a
good source.
Whole-grain breads. Seven-grain, dark rye, cracked
wheat, and pumpernickel breads are good choices.
Whole grains. Bulgur wheat, brown rice, wild rice, and
barley are all tasty substitutions for white rice.
Nuts and seeds. A handful of sunflower seeds,
pumpkin seeds, pistachios, or almonds gives you at
least 3 grams of fiber. They are also high in calories,
though, so make a little go a long way.
Popcorn. Three cups of air-popped popcorn have about
4 grams of fiber.
Try foods with fiber added. Milk and other dairy
products, and most juices, naturally have no or low
fiber. New products, however, are changing that
picture: Look for labels on orange juice, milk, and
yogurt that say fiber is added or “fiber fortified.”

Killing Kennedy by Bill O’Reilly
In January 1961, as the Cold War escalates, John F. Kennedy struggles with the growth of Communism,
while he learns the hardships of being president of the United States. Along the way he acquires a
number of formidable enemies, Khrushchev, Castro, and Alan Dulles, director of the CIA, as well as
organized crime elements. During a 1963 campaign trip to Texas, Kennedy is gunned down by an erratic
young drifter named Lee Harvey Oswald. The events leading up to the most notorious crime of the
twentieth century are almost as shocking as the assassination itself. Join library facilitator Jane Henze
for a discussion of this profoundly moving page-turner.

Personal Emergency
Preparedness Kit presentation
Starting in November, Dane County’s
Department of Emergency
Management will be giving
presentations on personal emergency
preparedness at Senior Centers across the
county. They will be bringing approximately 20
“starter” personal emergency kits to help
attendees develop their own personal emergency
preparedness kit. Emergency Management’s
AmeriCorps worker Ryan Jensen will be giving
these presentations and helping attendees
identify personal items that should be placed in
these kits. Ryan will be presenting at the Center
on Tuesday, November 25th at 12:00 p.m.
“Half Hour Health”
on Cardiovascular Disease
This new monthly educational program will be
presented by UW Madison Pharmacy students
who belong to the Pho Chi Pharmacy Honor
Society and will meet on Tuesday, November 4th at
12:00 p.m. During this health talk, student
pharmacists will be going over risk factors for
cardiovascular disease and lifestyle modifications
that lower one’s risk for developing cardiovascular
disease. Given that cold season is rapidly
approaching, the students will also go over
appropriate cough and cold medications for
individuals with cardiovascular disease. There will
be an opportunity for questions.

The Scoop
Try an Audio Book Today!
Audio books are great to listen to when you’re:
taking a walk; cooking or doing dishes; folding
laundry; can’t sleep; driving or riding in a car;
too tired to read; gardening; sewing; knitting or
crocheting; or just want to relax. They are
perfect for those who have trouble reading print.
Listening to a book instead of reading it can be
a powerful experience. Many titles are now
available on CDs or cassettes at the Center. You
can borrow audio books simply by signing the
check-out sheet. Titles change monthly and
books can be checked out for about four weeks.
If you’ve never listened to an audio book before,
come in and select an author you like. The
books can be played on a CD or cassette player,
with or without headphones. Please contact
Jane at the DeForest Area Public Library at
846-5482 if you have any questions.
