We, the Church of Our Lady of the Lake, are a Roman Catholic Community, called as
disciples and companions of the Risen Jesus Christ, made present through our celebration of the
sacraments, our proclamation of the Gospel, our ministries of service and leadership.
We are a community who depend completely on God’s grace. We are made equal through
Baptism in Christ, and so we commit ourselves to the spirit of collaboration and inclusion.
We, as a community of believers, seek to respond to God’s call.
Our community is a place,
where those who are searching are welcomed,
where injustice, in all its expressions, is challenged,
where the alienated find a home, and
where people are refreshed, reconciled, and transformed as
they journey in faith to God!
Through the intercession of Mary, the Virgin Mother of Guadalupe, the Patroness of our
parish, it is God’s reign that joins us as one in our mission.

Thanksgiving Donations for our Neighbors
Dear Friends,
Although I arrived here at OLL on September 1, 2014 Bishop Donato will be here to formally install me as your pastor
at the 5:30 mass. As you know I’m delighted to be here with
you and share in the building up of this great parish family.
I look forward to many blest and grace filled years with you.
I want to thank you in advance for being so kind and generous to me and for welcoming me (back) with loving and
open arms. I could not ask for a better welcome than the one
you’ve given me.
By now all of you have received a letter in the mail outlining
our stewardship initiative for this year. Stewardship, as we
know, is a biblical based response to God. It’s about knowing and counting our blessings and sharing them with others.
The three T’s of stewardship; time, talent and treasure are
just three categories that put our response to God into perspective. God who is so good has called us into life and being and in relationship with others. But as good and loving
as God is we have an accountability to Him. He has invested
much in us and wants a return on His investment. How are
we responding to God in light of all the gifts, talents and
blessings He’s bestowed on each of us. Do we make TIME
for prayer and nurture the relationships that God has entrusted to us? What are the TALENTS which God has equipped
us for the building up of families, societies, churches and
even our very selves? Do we see our TREASURE as given
to us by God and if so understand everything God gives us is
meant to be shared?
The first step of our stewardship initiative has begun. That was
the letter sent to each of you in the mail. Next weekend Tim
Dillane, our parish finance council president, will present to us
our yearly finance report and reflect on the importance of sharing one’s treasure to continue the works of God. The following
weekend is Thanksgiving and we will pray in thanksgiving to
our generous God for gifting us with so much. And on the
weekend of Dec. 6/7 we will hear from fellow parishioners, our
brothers and sisters, on how much they love our parish and hope
and pray for it’s continued growth and success. The formal
stewardship initiative will end on the weekend of December
12/13 with my “state of the parish” address and share my vision
and hopes for our great parish so that we can maintain our
health, vitality and vigor for many generations to come. All of
life is a gift. Let us be a grateful people and share the blessings
he has given to us.
Fraternal regards,
Rev. Joseph A. D’Amico

It is that time of year again, the season of giving, especially
to those less fortunate than us.
We are again working with the Verona Health Department to
collect for families who are in need of assistance at this time
of the year. They ask if you could please purchase grocery
gift cards to be given out to the families to use as needed.
Thank you for your generosity. The families are always so
grateful.
Gift cards can be purchased at all of the masses and can be
left at the gift card table with the Sacristan. There will be an
envelope marked Thanksgiving donations. Cards are available for purchase weekdays at the rectory. We would like to
get any donations to the families by November 20th.
Turkeys can be left in the bins outside the priest garage on
MONDAY, November 17. DO NOT LEAVE TURKEYS
IN THE CHURCH. You can call the rectory to arrange
other drop offs.
Music Ministry News
The OLL Music Ministry will present their
annual parish Christmas Concert on Friday,
Dec. 12 2014 at 7:30pm in the church. The
concert will feature wonderful Christmas music performed
by the OLL parish choir, children’s choir, and youth band as
well as audience participation in the singing of favorite
Christmas carols.
Women’s Spirituality
Wednesday, November 19 will be our last Women’s Spirituality session for the autumn season. We will be on hiatus
during the month of December as we participate in the
beautiful Advent programs in the parish.
Our winter session will begin on Wednesday February 4 at
7:30pm in the Chapel. Come for a mid-week respite whenever your schedule allows, as we seek to grow in our faith.
Please mark your calendars for Saturday February 7 for
our annual Spiritual Spa Day. This year’s guest presenter
will be Sister Antonia Cooper. We look forward to your
presence!
Stewardship Reflections:
“Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been
faithful over a little, I will set you over much…” Matthew
25:21
God expects us to nurture and develop the gifts He has given
us and then generously give back with increase. He doesn’t
want us to waste or hoard the gifts He has given us; He expects us to grow our gifts, use them wisely and be generous
with them.

OLL Great Parents and Kids
Parent teacher conferences, held this past week, presented a
great opportunity to meet parents, evaluate performance,
answer questions and to plan together to increase learning
and to meet intended goals. Conferences present the opportunity for home and school to work together to benefit each
student! The mutual feedback was great!

At Our Lady of the Lake, baptism is scheduled for Sunday afternoons at 1:30pm, and
takes place once a month. A catechesis is
given on a weekday evening just prior to the
Sunday baptism. At the catechesis, the spiritual and practical aspects of the Sacrament are
discussed. This meeting, hosted by a husband and wife team
from the parish and led by one of the priests or deacon, provides an opportunity for community building and sharing.
For parents who have been blessed with a new baby
and want to answer Christ’s invitation to this new life, please
call the rectory at 973/239-5696 to arrange a date for your
child’s baptism.

Notes from Newark
One of the funny things about grace is that you
can’t be sure where you are going to encounter it. With
God’s all-encompassing presence, His grace can intrude into
our lives just about anywhere.
As a trustee of St. John’s parish, I had the opportunity the other day to sit in on a fundraising presentation
that was being given to a local corporate foundation. The
meeting was going well when there was a commotion out in
the hallway; the parish administrator left the room to see
what was going on. Uncharacteristically for Vinnie, he was
quiet when he returned a few minutes later; I think he had
tears in his eyes. He explained, “That was one of the guys
who used to be on the line. We haven’t seen him in a few
years and wondered what had happened to him. It turns out
that he was in a drug rehabilitation program and is now employed.” Vinnie held out the $50 bill the man had given him
in gratitude for the support that St. John’s Soup Kitchen had
provided him over the years. It was clear to everyone in that
room that God’s grace was present at that moment.
Support comes in many different forms, but everyone at St. John’s will gratefully acknowledge the support
from the parish community of Our Lady of the Lake. Year
in and year out, you provide the money and the food and the
effort that keeps the doors of the soup kitchen open.
St. Teresa of Ávila once observed, “Christ has no
body now on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but
yours; Yours are the eyes through which He looks, compassion on this world.” God’s grace flows out through us to
touch those who are most vulnerable. Thank you for being
the conduit of that grace to the poor and the homeless in
Newark.
