I hope you weathered the storm and maybe booked a trip South. Last Saturday
afternoon I stopped at Menards. (Some people go to heaven or hell at death; I’m
hoping to go to Menards. Steve Friederich’s thinks it will be Home Depot but he
will be surprised.) I have never seen a store so crowded. You could watch the
shovels, snow blowers, and ice melt disappear before your very eyes. Klier’s had
a store full of snow blowers in the morning and none by late afternoon.

Sunday after Confirmation I drove to Target for my weekly grocery shopping. There
was no place to park so I left and went back at 8:30 pm when the crowds were lower.
It looked like the locusts had just passed through. You know, if Jesus were on earth
today he could have told a great parable.
“It’s like Minnesotan’s before a storm. They check their cupboards and see there are
no potato chips. ‘Boy I better go to Target before the storm hits’ or they go out to
the garage and remember, ‘I ran over the shovel backing in the boat this Spring so
I better go to Menard’s and get a new one. Grandma Schmiesing is coming over for
Thanksgiving and I got to get some ice melt so she don’t break her hip again and
come live with us.’
If Minnesotan’s know how to prepare for Winter how come they cannot shape up
their lives because something more than 11 inches of snow is coming?
It’s the week before Christ the King and two weeks before the First Sunday of
Advent (I will say nothing about the proximity of Christmas.) The Gospel stories
are reminding us about the ephemeral quality of life, the end times where one day
you are planting the next you are the planted. What have you done with your life?
Of course if you haven't discovered a cure for cancer, or found a new pollution free
source of unlimited power do not give up hope. Charity can always be your salvation
if you can ask at the end times, “Lord when did I see you hungry and feed you, or
naked and I clothed you?” And the Lord says that “When you did this to the least
of my brethren you did it to me”. Now you can relax a bit. You may make it yet.
I am always amazed how almost every great religion calls for justice, care of the poor,
an end of violence but its followers spend more time killing each other over what
their divinity looks like and who he likes best. You wonder if people cared more
about the former if they would even worry about the latter.

Ring In Christmas! SAGES invites SJA seniors to a gathering of prayer, food and song on Thursday, Dec. 11.
Celebration begins with Mass in the Church at
11:30, followed by lunch in Hospitality Hall. Entertainment provided by our own JP Fitzgibbons and
Dan Chouinard. Suggested $10 free will donation to offset
expenses; no one will be turned away for inability to pay.

to our attention that some members, who have chosen
to discontinue their electronic sustaining contribution

Aliveness Project at SJA: Today, the Aliveness Project - a
service provider to people living with HIV/AIDS
and a Justice Fund grant recipient - will be with us
to recruit holiday basket providers. Stop by after
Mass to learn more!
Wreath of Love: Select a gift request off the wreath in the
Gym vestibule today, purchase a simple gift for a neighborhood elder and return it by Sunday, Dec. 7. What a lovely
way to remember those in our community who are often
neglected at holiday time.

needed at the American Indian Center for their wonderful

Christmas With Dignity (recipient of a SJA Justice Fund
grant) seeks volunteers to help sort and price gifts and assist
with set-up. This program makes it possible for low-income

The Bottom Line: Contributions last week were $4,066
above budget. Year-to-date contributions were $1,808 or
0.3% below budget, which is great. As we approach the
end of the year and members are doing their appropriate
yearend planning. Stock donations can be made to SJA
and deducted in the current year. They need to be

We All Need a Second Chance: A criminal record can be a
huge and permanent barrier to housing, employment or
higher education. If you have a criminal record or work with
people who do, come and learn about the very hopeful
changes in MN law that make a genuine second chance

A Christmas Greeting to Those Who Need It Most: On
Sunday, Nov. 30, following each Mass, you are
invited to sign Christmas cards to Central American women and families being held in U.S. immigration detention this holiday season. We will
have cards available, we also welcome donated
cards, and we will have messages ready to write in Spanish.
