ST. BRENDAN CHURCH A Catholic Parish Community : Church and School 29 Rockaway Avenue San Francisco CA 94127 Tel. No. (415) 681-4225 www.stbrendanparish.org Nov. 23, 2014 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Let us give thanks as a Parish Family!!! Please join us for a Mass of Thanksgiving Wednesday, November 26, 2014 11:00 AM (School Mass) Thursday, November 27, 2014 7:30 AM and 9:30 AM ( There will be NO 6:30 AM Mass on Thanksgiving Day.) Share your blessings by bringing non-perishable items for St. Vincent de Paul. Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Thankfulness is Good for the Health Reflecting on God’s Word Tom is allergic to cats, even when they’re not around but once were. His eyes turn red, and he starts to wheeze so that he has to excuse himself and leave. Oddly enough, he has lately befriended a neighborhood stray at his back door. He doesn’t touch it, and he won’t allow it into his house, but he feeds it regularly and even misses it when it doesn’t show up on his stoop. Something moves us to care for the lost among us. It is often instinctive, and at times even contrary to our own best interests, as with Tom and his allergy to cats. Is such sympathy for the underdog written on the back of our psyches? Are lost souls really long-lost kin? Is it guilt that moves us to contribute to food pantries and bread lines or is it genuine compassion? If we are to believe in the Incarnation, that God has taken form in human flesh, then those instincts to visit shut-ins imprisoned in their own homes and to free those who still find themselves locked into poverty are Godly instincts. It is holiness bred in our bones, incapable of being held in. Because someone is hungry, we find ourselves giving to a food pantry or volunteering at a soup kitchen. Because someone is a stranger, we welcome them into our neighborhood and seek ways to comfort the immigrant. Because someone is imprisoned by illness or old age, we visit them and check in on them. And because our own individual efforts often seem so meager in the face of so many needs, we seek ways to institutionalize our care through government policy and funding. It is all a Godly instinct. Studies show that people who are actively thankful are less likely to be depressed, anxious, jealous and find they enjoy ordinary pleasures like sunsets, good health and simply being alive. Here is how you can join them … Keep score. For three days straight, keep track of how many times you think grateful thoughts versus complaining. This is your Grateful to Grumbling Ratio. The higher your G2G Ratio, the happier you will be. Poll others. Find out what others are thankful for. You will probably discover something you should also be thankful for but haven’t thought of. “I get to …” Instead of saying, “I have to …” to describe tasks, say, “I get to …” Think of every day as a blessing and chance to serve God. Fast. Forgo something you like such as food, TV, the internet. It will make you more thankful for it when you get it back. Purge often. Have you noticed that the people who have the least seem the happiest? Keep only what you need. CONSECRATION TO JESUS THROUGH MARY You are all invited to a special service of Consecration to Jesus through Mary: WHEN: WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2014 7:00 - 8:00 PM WHERE: ST. BRENDAN CHURCH What is special about this consecration? God chose Mary to be the Mother of Jesus and for nine (9) months, Mary was the tabernacle of Jesus. For the next 30 years, Jesus chose obedience and devotion to Mary. At the same time, Mary honored and loved Jesus as God Incarnate. When we consecrate our life to Jesus through Mary, we surround ourselves and encounter both human and divine love. To be enveloped in this love is beyond imagining. In next week’s bulletin: Find out why we should I do it? Reflections of Our Parochial Vicar Iesu Christi Universorum Regis: Jesus Christ King of the universe Today, the Church in a special way invites us to celebrate Jesus Christ our anointed king who overcame suffering and death, and so brought us out of darkness into his kingdom of light. Today, the entire world stands still and bows to the King of kings and the Lord of lords (Rev 17, 14).). Historically, this feast was established in 1925 by Pius XI to commemorate the 1,600 years anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, which condemned Arius. For Arius had denied that Jesus is God from God, Light from Light, and True God from True God. In his papal encyclical Quas Primas meaning ‘In the First’, Pius XI connected the denial of Christ as king with the rise of nationalism and secularism that was prevalent in Europe. This wave of secularism led many Christians including Catholics to abandon the sacred realm for the secular realm. He also linked it to the proximate power tussle between the papacy and Mussolini of Italy. This feast of Christ the King was to serve as a remedy to secularism. The sacred scripture attests to the Lordship and Kingship of Jesus Christ. The Prophet Isaiah says: ‘for a child is born to us, a son is given to us; upon his shoulder dominion rests. He shall be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace’ (Is. 9:5). At the annunciation, the Angel Gabriel said: ‘And the Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end’ (Lk. 1:32-33). The super inscription on the cross: ‘I.N.R.I’ meaning ‘Jesus the Nazarene King of the Jews’ which was meant to mock Jesus became rather a confirmation of his kingship (Matt. 27:37). Jesus also affirmed his kingship when he said to Pilate: ‘You say I am a king for this I was born and for this I came into the world to, to testify to the truth’ (Jn. 18:37). So as we celebrate this feast today, let us ask ourselves, do we really belong to the kingdom ruled by Christ? We are grateful to God that we have come to the last Sunday of our liturgical year, cycle A year 2. Next Sunday we will begin a new liturgical calendar year with the first Sunday of Advent, cycle B, year 1. We shall witness the change of liturgical colors from green to purple and the gospel cycle from Matthew to Mark. With these changes there is also the need to change the banners and decorate our Church for Christmas. I therefore appeal for volunteers as many as possible to help with the decoration of our Church. The decoration will take place Saturday November 29th 20014 at 8:30 am. We shall have coffee and pastries. We have always relied on your never-failing generosity and we appreciate it as we thank you in advance for the coming Saturday. On Thursday November 27th we shall mark our annual feast of thanksgiving as American people and particularly as members of the beautiful family of St. Brendan. I therefore encourage to attend one of the masses either at 7:30 am or 9:30 am. We cannot thank God enough for his goodness to us but like the psalmist who said, “how can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The cup of salvation I will raise, I will call on the Lord’s name”. Come let us together raise the chalice in thanksgiving. As we come, let us remember to extend our hand to the poor by bringing non-perishable items and canned food for the needy and poor. May we be their reason to thank God. On December 9th 2014 it will be exactly 25 years since Fr. Ted was ordained. Let us hold him specially in our prayers as he marks his silver jubilee. On the feast of our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12th at 6:00 pm, we shall have him celebrate a thanksgiving mass and I invite you all to join at that mass to pray with and for him. Then we shall celebrate this humble, talented, gentle, good man and our pastor in a light refreshment in the hall. Peace Fr. Christmas Boutique 2014 Boutique and Carnival December 5th -7th Christmas Tradition Fun Facts From Around the World Christmas Tradition Fun Facts From Around the World France – On the eve of Christmas, beautifully lit churches and cathedrals ring out Christmas carols with their church bells. Some people burn a log in their homes from Christmas Eve until New Year's Day. This stems from an ancient tradition in which farmers would use part of the log to ensure good luck for the next year's harvest. Germany – Santa is called “Weihnachtsmann”. Some of the most popular Christmas carols of the world, like “O Christmas Tree” originated from Germany. Christmas trees are not decorated until Christmas Eve. As a tradition, the Christmas tree is decorated using mainly candles, candies, apples, tinsel and cookies. Christmas Ornaments and the “Giving Tree” In the spirit of giving this Christmas season please help decorate the “Giving Tree”. Throughout the weekend lovely ornaments can be purchased to either take home with you or place on the “Giving Tree”. Upon conclusion of the boutique the tree will be donated to Epiphany Center for Families in Recovery. Thank you in advance for helping to decorate the tree and bringing some cheer into the lives of those in need. Street Closure Please Note – Ulloa Street from the Gymnasium to the stop sign at Laguna Honda will be closed on Saturday, December 6th and Sunday, December 7th.
