NNS Appoints Bagley to
VP of Trades Operations
11 | 17 | 2014
On Nov. 12, Newport
News Shipbuilding
appointed Ray Bagley
to vice president of
Trades Operations.
A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding
Bagley, who will earn
the distinction of
“Master Shipbuilder”
for 40 years of
continuous service this
week, began his career
at The Apprentice School as a painter. He has
worked at all levels of production and
construction leadership on all of NNS’ product
lines, including nuclear-powered aircraft
carriers and submarines, ship repair and
conversion, and commercial ships. Most
recently, he served as production director for
In-Service Aircraft Carriers.
X15 Crew Recognized for
Safety Contributions
Shipbuilders in the Fab Shop were recently
recognized for their continued focus on safety
this year.
“Our crew takes pride in making the shop safe
for all employees,” said Brandon Peoples
(X15). “We care about each other and we
genuinely want everyone to return home to
their family the same way they came into work.”
Chris Arline (X15) says that wearing the
correct personal protective equipment (PPE)
has played a big role in the crew’s ability to
remain safe for the past four years. “The
majority of our crew works many job functions
throughout the day,” he said. “So before we get
to work, we always stop and check to ensure
that we are wearing the correct PPE.”
Sonny Volkers (X15) also says that the crew
constantly looks out for each other.

“Throughout the day, we are communicating to
each other and making sure our crewmates are
safe,” said Volkers. “If we see something that
doesn’t look right, we speak up.”
Peoples, Arline and Volkers believe the crew can
remain safe throughout 2015.
“We are going to continue building on the
foundation we’ve built and doing the things
we’ve done this year,” said Peoples. “I’m
confident we can go another year without an
accident.”

Keel Laying Ceremony
This Saturday, Newport News Shipbuilding will
lay the keel for the 14th Virginia-class submarine,
Washington (SSN 787). Ship’s Sponsor Elisabeth
Mabus, daughter of Secretary of the Navy Ray
Mabus, will have her initials welded onto a metal
plate during the ceremony, in keeping with U.S.
Navy tradition. Though construction began
in 2011, the keel laying marks the first official
construction milestone for the submarine.
Attendance to the event will be limited to a small
number of guests, however, a live webcast of the
ceremony will be available beginning at 4 p.m. at
www.huntingtoningalls.com/ssn787. A replay
of the ceremony will be available on the website
immediately following the event.

O53 Shipbuilders Stay
Up-to-Date on Their Fire
Safety Knowledge
Thinking “outside the box” about fire safety
is what O53 Material Shipbuilders have been
doing lately. The team came up with the idea to
play “Fire Safety Jeopardy” at lunch during a
staff meeting in September and have played it
twice since.
“We wanted to come up with a fun way to keep
fire safety at the forefront of our discussions,”
said Stan Foltz III, the team’s fire warden.
“We brainstormed different ideas, but we had a
unanimous decision about Jeopardy – so that’s
what we decided on.”
Prior to playing, four team members’ names
are drawn to be participants on the game show.
When the game begins, the Jeopardy theme
song plays and O53 Supervisor Mary Lou
Scheepers serves as the announcer.
“Currently, game categories include home,
office, shipyard and fire emergency equipment,”
said Evan Atkins (O53). “It’s a great way for
our team to stay engaged and learn about fire
safety at the same time.”
Front row (L to R): Evan Atkins, Karen Alvis, Hal King and Ryan Holloway. Back row (L to R): Jessica Jenkins, fire
warden, Stan Foltz III, fire warden, Joy Updike, Loretta Dews, Sherry Lusby, Ree Marshall, Manager Marcia Capelli
and Material Handling Supervisor Mary Lou Scheepers. Photo by John Whalen
Foltz added, “We hope our team will take the knowledge they’ve learned from this game and share
it with their family and friends.”
The team hopes to expand the lunchtime game to include other safety topics in the near future.

... design, and The Apprentice School.
Bagley will assume his new position on Dec. 8 and transition into the job
with the help of Danny Hunley, who will retire from the position on
Dec. 31 after more than 40 years with the shipyard.
“Danny entered our gates in 1974 as a welder trainee, and since that
time, he has served in a number of leadership positions,” said NNS
President Matt Mulherin. “He has been the voice of the craftsman on
my staff and will be missed for his dedicated service. He is a true Master
Shipbuilder in every way. I believe that Ray will continue to provide a
voice on my staff for the waterfront trades. He is committed to creating
a work environment that puts people first, and that, combined with his
knowledge of all shipyard programs, will be a great benefit to our operations and our shipbuilders.”

AROUND THE YARD
Apprentice’s
Perspective of
the John Warner
Launch
Rigger Apprentice Tyler
Quarterman assisted
with the launch of John
Warner (SSN 785).
Following the event, he
took the time to write about his experience.
In his essay, Quarterman writes, “As the ship
cleared the edges of the dry dock, the final lines
were cast off and we watched as this beautiful
vessel floated downriver, guided by the tugs.
Watching this peaceful journey, I was reminded of
the poem Senator John Warner had read at the
christening five days earlier. It began, ‘I must go
down to the sea again.’ Here before me was John
Warner (SSN 785) doing just that, reveling in the
first taste of the salty sea that she will one day
command.”
