As we approach year end, it is always helpful to take a look at the past year as we prepare for the 2015
season of competition. Our membership is “our target audience” and we therefore endeavor to serve your
interests!!
This past 2013/2014 season the VHSA Special Events Committee ended the 2013 season at the Annual
VHSA Convention with a Cocktail Reception for Trainers. Our hope was to have an opportunity for a dialogue with professionals to have their ideas as to the types of events they as trainers would like to see presented. There were many interesting ideas, some of which we hope to organize this next year. The following
afternoon of the Convention we held a Judges Clinic.. The session was well attended by both trainers, parents and students. It was very interesting to listen to the exchanges between the panelists and the many
professionals in attendance.
The importance of our pony riders learning the importance of showing their ponies to the best advantage
“in hand” has been communicated to our committee. This past June we held a “Showing Your Pony to Win”
held in conjunction with The Deep Run horse show. Oliver Brown was our clinician. It was held at the end
of the day with a group of young exhibitors to help them improve their abilities to show off their ponies to
the best advantage. We had a lovely day and a diverse group of ponies, making for an excellent learning opportunities for everyone who attended. We were grateful for Chris Wynn’s help in adding information from
a judge’s point of view.
In August we held our annual Mounted Equitation Clinic at the Lexington Horse Center in Lexington, VA.
The goal of this clinic has always been to bring in a well-known equitation trainer/judge to give the participants a “dress rehearsal “with “do-overs,” simulating the types of course one might encounter at the VHSA
Medal Finals which is always held on Saturday of this week. This year we were able to have Mark Leone as
our clinician. He was very positive with his advice and enthusiastic in helping all the riders in each of the
sessions.
We are in the planning stages for next year. If there is a particular trainer you or your student would like to
have the opportunity to ride please send your suggestion via email to the VHSA office (vhsa@verizon.net).
Thanks to the efforts of E. Sue Bopp, our committee was awarded a grant from the USHJA to be used to
help offset expenses for educational purposes such as the Mounted Clinic.
The VHSA Special Events Committee offers a $1,000 Scholarship that is awarded to a young professional to
further his/her education (attend a clinic, etc.) The details of the requirements for this Scholarship are available on the VHSA website (www.vhsa.com). Please contact the VHSA for information and obtain the application.
Our committee will hold a planning meeting on November 17,2014. If there are any events/projects which
you would like to see undertaken, please email or call the VHSA office.
Happy Holidays

Virginia Horse Center launches Annual Fund Campaign
If you have visited the Virginia Horse Center recently you may have noticed improvements “in the works” as well as a
variety or recent completed improvements. These include grading and surfacing of roadways, newly painted roofs on
barns, the Wiley grandstand and other outbuildings, filling and grading of stall floors in all barns, new footing in the Wiley
arena and upgraded lighting in the Anderson Coliseum.
Earlier this year, we also made significant changes to our food service offering and delivery which has received very positive feedback to date. Thanks to a major gift from the Virginia Dressage Association this summer, the Blue Hen restaurant (formerly known as The Winner’s Circle) has re-opened to offer food and beverages from this location in addition to
the service available in the Coliseum and in the vans located around the facility.
All of these improvements were made possible through the generosity of individual donors, organizations
and supporters just like you. The Virginia Horse Center has served our equestrian community for over a quarter of a
century and just as in the past, each fall marks the launch of the Annual Fund Campaign. These unrestricted gifts make an
impact every day in every area by bridging the financial gap for annual operating and program expenses as well as facility
improvements.
During 2014, 96 events will take place at the VHC, and in the coming years that number will increase. Along with that
increase is an ongoing commitment from the Board and staff to ensure that the Virginia Horse Center is the very best
that it can be for all visitors and participants. Future goals include hosting world class equestrian events and our collective
efforts today will ensure our ability to secure those events here in Virginia in the future.
For those of you who have supported the VHC with donations in past, management and the Board would like to extend a
sincere “Thank you.” If you have not made a gift, please consider making a one this year. Gifts can be made on the web
site at www.horsecenter.org or through contacting a staff member at 540-464-2950.
