Sunnyside Artists’ free admission “Crafts and Art Fair”
took place last Sunday from 10
to 5pm, hosted by Queen of
Angels Church in the historic
Parish Center, and by 2pm, 620
guests had passed passed
through, with three hours to go,
taking in the handiwork of 33
local crafters.
“I think this was the best
craft show so far,” said Natalie,
a Woodsider. “You can see the
influence of new people into
the neighborhood. A bodybuilder comic artist [ALexio
Gessa] showed up as a super
hero. I bought some little presents, an organic dried fruit
sculpture [Blanca Narvaez] and
a tiny coiled box made from of
recycled
paper
[Mary
Caulfield] which looks like outsider prison art.”
President Manny Gomez said,
“We had a moment of silence for
Luke Adams, Sunnyside Artists
VP, who passed away suddenly
November 10. We all miss him.”
This fair was the first Sunnyside
Artists event missing three organization volunteers Luke Adams,
founder Pat Dorfman out of town
due to family illness, and Pastor
Brian Dowd, who is leading a
church group in Poland.
Gomez added, “I did my best
to keep things running smoothly
and things were set up well by Pat
and Luke. And my family always
saves us,” Manny laughed. “We
are grateful to Becky Barker, Don
McCallian, Christopher Whalen,
Deidre Feerick, Melissa Orlando,
Peter Wing, Mary Ann Gurrado,
Pronto Car Service, The
Woodside Herald, Mary
Caulfield, Kris Czeriachowicz,
Turkish Cultural Center, and
Emin Karas, and the always amazing Frances Schmidt. It takes 24
non-artists to make this happen.
Thank you, volunteers, and thank
you, artists!”

Under 40 list definitely does. This
year’s group of Rising Stars is our
most diverse class ever, with threequarters representing the city’s
majority-minority population and
half of our honorees being women.
That distinction was not intentional; our choices merely reflect a
trend in leadership that only promises to become more influential in
the years and decades to come.
This year’s class also accentuates the greater range of professional areas that impact city government and policy. In addition to
the elected officials, agency heads,
staffers, communications pros,
journalists, lobbyists, activists, and
union officials who typically fill
out our list, there are tech leaders,
figures from academia, representatives from the cultural world, and
even crisis management experts.
These 40 exceptional young
people—selected from over 600
reader nominations—have already
earned the respect of their colleagues and made a difference in
the sectors and communities in
which they work.

Announcing The Start
Of Open Enrollment For New York’s
Health Insurance Marketplace
Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the
Bronx), Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus, announced the start of open enrollment
for New York’s health insurance marketplace, which runs from November 15, 2014
to February 15, 2015. The open enrollment
period gives New Yorkers the opportunity
to apply for coverage, review their current
plan, or select a new plan for 2015.
“The Affordable Care Act is providing
access to quality and affordable coverage
that, until now, has been out of reach for too
many Americans,” said Rep. Crowley.
“Open enrollment only comes once a year,
so it is extremely important that every New
Yorker purchasing health coverage through
New York’s marketplace take the time to
review their plan options and ensure they
have a plan that meets their health needs for
the coming year, that their family information is all up to date, and that they are not
missing out on valuable financial assistance.”
New Yorkers purchasing healthcare
through the state marketplace can review
plans and compare coverage options through
the official New York State of Health website
at: www.nystatehealth.ny.gov.
More information can also be found on
Rep. Crowley’s online information portal in
English and Spanish.
Veterans Day Essay Contest Winner
On Wednesday, November 5, Rep. Joe
Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), Vice
Chair of the Democratic Caucus, announced the winner of the inaugural Veterans Day essay competition for students
in New York’s 14th Congressional District. Kezia Dickson, an eighth grader at
I.S. 61 in Corona, placed first out of more
than 800 students who participated in the
contest. Crowley recognized Kezia with
an American flag flown over the U.S. Capitol and presented her with a statement to be
entered into the Congressional Record in honor of her essay.
“Our Veterans Day essay contest was a wonderful opportunity to encourage our youth
to reflect upon our nation’s history and salute the members of our armed forces for all their
sacrifices,” said Rep. Crowley. “Kezia’s essay perfectly captures what it means to
commemorate the holiday and underscores the importance of paying tribute to the men and
women who protect the freedoms we’ve fought so hard for. Congratulations to Kezia and
all of the students who wrote to express their heartfelt appreciation for our veterans. In my
family, I have uncles and cousins who have served and are serving now,” Kezia wrote in
her essay. “I understand what they do is very hard and it takes mental, emotional, and
physical strength to go through with it. They go through so many obstacles, but they seem
to never give up. They make me proud to call myself an American.”
Crowley’s essay competition was open to students in grades 5-8 who live in the
14th Congressional District. The top selections from each grade also received
congressional recognition.

STARS ALIGN FOR THE KIDS
Founded in 1955, the Club has provided
Western Queens with a phenomenal after
school program, whose mission is “To provide children of all backgrounds with the
skills and abilities that will develop in them
the qualities of self-esteem and self-confidence, which are needed to become responsible citizens and leaders.” Every day over
150 multicultural children enter the building, and are provided with a hot meal, a safe
and supportive environment, and a broad
range of youth programs in the areas of
personal and educational development, citizenship and leadership development, cultural enrichment, health and physical education, and social recreation.
Two months before the event, local celebrities were paired with volunteer professional dancers in order to have them practice
and learn a dance routine to be performed on
the night of the fundraiser. In the past, the
organization has had influential members
such as Council members, Chairmen, teachers, basketball coaches, visually impaired
individuals, cancer survivors and much more
participate as the community stars. This
year’s stars were Vincent Renda, the Vice
President of the Variety Boys and Girls Club
Board of Directors, Joann Rodeschin,
Teacher and Chapter Leader for the United
Federation of Teachers (UFT), and Lucha
Alforque, from St. Teresa’s Parish in
Woodside. In addition to the donation of
rehearsal time, each celebrity registered
sponsors who helped them raise money for
both VBGCQ and a charity of their choice.
The competition runs similarly to the Dancing with the Stars TV show aired on television. It is judged by a three member-judging
panel, who provide their expert feedback to
each couple’s performance. This year VBGCQ
was lucky to have Queens Museum’s Jason
Yoon, along with Christine DeJesus, owner of
Elite Dance Academy, and Wellington Lora
Jr., founder of The Cueniverse Music Agency,
giving their critique.
The evening started off with a moment
of silence for Luke Adams, a long time
Sunnyside advocate, who passed away
earlier last week. Luke was a friend of
many who were involved with the Boys
and Girls Club, and was an influential
member of the Sunnyside community. He
will be greatly missed.
Guests enjoyed a buffet of deliciously
cooked food and hors d’oeuvres provided by
the one and only Long Island Gourmet, located in Mineola, and anxiously awaited the
performances they look forward to each year.

The couples glided across the
floor performing dances in the areas of tango, salsa and theatre jazz,
and waited for their results from
the judges. When the results were
in, Charlie Siguenza and Lucha
Alforque won first place by raising
$2,927, with their outstanding theatre jazz routine. Lucha, who is a
CCD teacher and mentor at St.
Teresa’s Church, danced to support her local Church, and stated “I
looked forward to dance practice
each week.” Joann Rodeschin and
Rodney Harris won second place
with their tango routine, and
Vincent Renda and Michele
Bowles’ salsa routine, which included a cameo appearance by
Vincent’s wife Elaina Renda, won
them third place.
A special addition to this year’s
program of events was special
guest performances by Lorenz
Latin Dance Studio, and Broadway Theater Center, who selflessly
donated their time and talent to
this magnificent event. Lorenz
Dancers performed a wonderful
salsa routine, and Broadway Theater Center wowed the crowd with
their hip-hop performance.
“This event was ground breaking,” said Executive Director,
Blair Trunzo, with its ability to
bring together the talent and generosity of members from all over,
including the Sunnyside/
Woodside Communities, and the
Long Island City/Astoria communities. Vincent Renda, shared
about the recent marriage of the
Sunnyside/Woodside Unit with
the Variety Boys and Girls Club,
who are now administering all
programs in the Sunnyside Community. Walter Sanchez,
VBGCQ’s Board President,
spoke about the start of programming at P.S. 199, the continued
commitment to the Sunnyside/
Woodside community, and the
importance of afterschool programs throughout the Queens
area.8 Local businesses showed
their support, including Vesta
Trattoria and Bar 43, who graciously donated the beverages,
and the evening’s chief sponsor,
Central Avenue Chrysler. As a
result, the crowd, volunteers and
participants had an awesome time
raising money for the Boys and
Girls Club, which will guarantee
a full range of programs for the
kids of the Western Queens Community for the coming year.

Our Rising Stars in years past
have risen to become members of
Congress, deputy mayors, commissioners, and titans of business.
As accomplished as this year’s
class already is, we are certain that
they have much farther to go in
their professional and personal
lives. We invite you to meet these
leaders of tomorrow today.
JASON BANREY
Deputy Chief of Staff, Media
and Public Policy Director, Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer
AGE: 31
Jason Banrey’s job, first and
foremost, is to navigate the media
for the New York City Council’s
majority leader, Jimmy Van
Bramer. But it was Banrey’s interest at a young age in community
service that laid the groundwork
for his future in public service.
“My family has a long history
of volunteering at community
cleanups, and in education, as
well,” said Banrey, whose parents
were both teachers. “So between
the two of them and the Boy Scouts,
it’s what instilled the importance
of getting involved and falling in
love with public service.”
Before entering the world of
government, like many media re-
lations experts, Banrey first gained
the valuable experience of working as a journalist, writing for the
Queens Tribune. A news junkie,
Banrey found that the job satisfied
his passion for politics, but he
wanted an opportunity to have a
more hands-on impact in the local
community. Enter Van Bramer,
who hired him as communications
director in 2012. Now holding the
title of deputy chief of staff,
Banrey has also played a role in
shaping policy. An avid cyclist,
he helped craft a recently passed
bill to levy tougher penalties on
hit-and-run motorists.
“We have a really tight-knit
family, and Jimmy’s really fostered a family feel with us. I
wouldn’t be able to do the great
work that we do without the amazing team that we have,” Banrey
said. “Every single day it’s a pleasure to come in to the district office
or the legislative office and work
with a team that cares about the
26th District but also improving
the lives of all New Yorkers.”
If You Were Not
Working In Politics or
Government, What
Would You Be Doing?
“I’d continue traveling the
world. I’ve done a lot of traveling,
and I think it’s a pretty good list of
destinations that I’ve hit, but there’s
so much more I’d love to see.”
