are subject to towing at the owner’s expense. • Please park only in your assigned parking

Remember Your Grandparents!
Many grandparents are forgotten. Did you know that 60 percent of nursing home
residents never have a visitor? The first Sunday after Labor Day is National Grandparents
Day. Celebrate by providing compassion and caring to Canada’s forgotten, frail
elderly...whether homebound or in convalescent-type care.
Preparing Kids for Their First Day of School
A young child‘s first few days of school can set the tone for a successful year and a lifetime
of education. The secret is talking to your child about what to expect so the first day doesn‘t
come as a shock. Here are a few tips:• Calm your children‘s fears. Encourage them to talk
about their feelings. Let them know that feeling nervous about the first day of school is
completely normal. • Focus on the positives. Talk about what they‘ll learn, the new friends
they‘ll make, and how their teachers will help them. Don‘t build up unrealistic expectations
about how great the school year will be, but be upbeat so they have something to look
forward to.• Visit the school before it opens. This helps young children feel comfortable when
the big day comes. If possible, try to arrange a meeting between your kids and their new
teachers so they can get familiar with each other.• Review safety rules. Go over safety
measures regarding traffic and strangers. If your neighbourhood has children who attend
the same school as your child, get them to travel together. On the first few days of school,
it might be a good idea to walk with your children to the bus stop or to school until they
feel comfortable on their own.

News You Can Use
Get stronger,
live longer
with training
eginning as early as age 30, your muscle
mass begins to decline.
As years go by, you may begin to look soft
or flabby. These changes can start as early as
your 30s, but most people see more differences
in their 40s and 50s. Unless you do something
about it, you will lose about 1 percent of your
lean muscle mass per year after age 40.
It doesn’t have to happen. Only 30 percent
of muscle loss is due to aging. The other 70 percent is up to you to maintain. Even if loss has
begun, this percentage can be regained
through strength training.

and your identity means being careful
online. Here’s a list of information you
should never share with your 1,240
Facebook friends and Twitter followers:
• Providing the month, day, and year
can give potential identity thieves
valuable data they can use to steal your
personal information and wreak havoc
with your financial profile.
• Don’t let burglars know exactly
when your home will be empty for two
weeks. Share vacation news after you
return.
• Identity thieves can use the data to
set up alternative identities that you
might not notice immediately. Some
experts recommend never posting a
child’s name in a caption.
• This is probably obvious, but it bears
repeating, along with the other “well,
duh!” items you should leave offline, like
your mother’s maiden name, password
hints, and any part of your Social
Security number.
C
help you design a routine, especially if you
are a beginner or have health issues.
At the start, take it slow. The goal is to
gradually and consistently improve over
time. Always begin with five to 10 minutes
of gentle exercise to warm up your muscles.
You can do strength training at home or
in the gym. Consider using:
• Your body weight to do exercises such
as push-ups, sit-ups, leg squats, or side and
back strengthening exercises.
• Resistance tubing, which can be found
at sporting goods stores and department
stores.
• Free weights, such as barbells or dumbbells. Start with light weights.
• Weight machines.
The Mayo Clinic studies show these to be
some of the benefits:
Stronger bones. Strength training increases
bone density and reduces your risk of osteoporosis.
Weight control and fat reduction. Muscle
burns calories, making it easier to reduce
body fat and control your weight.
Fewer injuries. You will have better balance, coordination and agility. Your joints will
be more stable and will be able to give muscles a greater role in absorbing stresses on
joints.
Less back pain. Strengthening the lower
back muscles is a proven way to ease back
pain.
Better brain activity. Studies show that
strength training and exercise improve cognitive function.
lothes make the man, or woman,
especially at work. How you dress
makes a big impression on your boss, your
colleagues, and customers. Wherever you
work, here are some basic tips on dressing
for success:
• Look around your workplace. This is
especially useful when interviewing, but it’s
good advice throughout your career. Take
note of how your co-workers dress, as
well as what upper management wears.
Be ready for any
(minor) medical
emergency
You never know when
you’ll need first aid.
Accidents happen, and
though you can’t predict
them, you can be ready.
Here’s what you should
keep in a well-stocked first
aid kit:
• Adhesive bandages
(at least 25, different
sizes and shapes)
• Antibiotic ointment
• Antiseptic wipes
• Aspirin, acetaminophen,
ibuprofen
• Sterile gauze pads
(different sizes)
• Non-latex gloves
• Scissors
• Oral thermometer
• Burn ointment
• Eyewash solution
• Tweezers
• Safety pins
• Ice pack/heating pack
• First-aid instruction
booklet
Dress for the job you want, and emulate the
wardrobe of people you want to impress.
• Don’t get too “casual.” Even if your
workplace doesn’t expect full-fledged
business attire, be careful to dress neatly
and professionally. Khakis are generally
better than jeans, but if you do wear jeans,
be sure they don’t have any rips or holes. A
nice sweater or sport shirt is preferable to a
T-shirt.
• Pay attention to footwear. Keep your
shoes polished and in good condition. Their
appearance is subtle but they can
contribute to your overall image.
• Keep a change of clothes handy. You
don’t need to bring a full suit to work and
stash it in your desk, but hanging a sport
jacket in the closet or behind your door
means you can instantly improve your
appearance if you need to look a little more
professional.

Knowing his child’s life is at stake, the frantic
