Preparing Kids for Their First Day of School A young child‘s first few days of school can set the tone for a successful year and a lifetime of education. The secret is talking to your child about what to expect so the first day doesn‘t come as a shock. Here are a few tips:• Calm your children‘s fears. Encourage them to talk about their feelings. Let them know that feeling nervous about the first day of school is completely normal. • Focus on the positives. Talk about what they‘ll learn, the new friends they‘ll make, and how their teachers will help them. Don‘t build up unrealistic expectations about how great the school year will be, but be upbeat so they have something to look forward to.• Visit the school before it opens. This helps young children feel comfortable when the big day comes. If possible, try to arrange a meeting between your kids and their new teachers so they can get familiar with each other.• Review safety rules. Go over safety measures regarding traffic and strangers. If your neighbourhood has children who attend the same school as your child, get them to travel together. On the first few days of school, it might be a good idea to walk with your children to the bus stop or to school until they feel comfortable on their own. As years go by, you may begin to look soft or flabby. These changes can start as early as your 30s, but most people see more differences in their 40s and 50s. Unless you do something about it, you will lose about 1 percent of your lean muscle mass per year after age 40. It doesn’t have to happen. Only 30 percent of muscle loss is due to aging.
