Redeemer Lutheran Church 869 7th Avenue SE Rochester, MN 55904 Redeemer Lutheran The Last Sunday Church “Making Him Known” of the Church Year Saturday, November 22, 2014 – 5:30 pm But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in Sunday, November 23, 2014 – 8:00 & 10:40 am all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8 Our Mission Statement: “As Christians based on the solid foundation of God’s Word, empowered by the Holy Spirit we strive to live out, lift up, and share our faith in Jesus Christ – welcoming all into our family of believers.” Our Theme: Each month this year we are considering how different Biblical characters made our Lord known in unique ways. In November, we remember Simeon, as we Make Him Known in our daily lives. WELCOME VISITORS We have printed out our worship service to make it easier for all of us to follow. Hymns are found in the hymn section of the Lutheran Service Book or in Worship & Praise, the purple supplement. Please visit our “Welcome Center” in the narthex for additional information about Redeemer. OUR THEME FOR TODAY is “Eternal Peace – Through Christ.” This world will eventually come to an end – and all will be judged. While many fear such a day, as Christians we can look forward to the return of our Lord. We Come Into God’s Presence (*) Those who are able are asked to stand during these parts of the service. (Please be seated.) -2- Redeemer Lutheran Church 869 7th Avenue SE Rochester, MN 55904 (Sunday) ANTHEM “How Great Thou Art” – Chancel Chimes God Speaks to Us SCRIPTURE READINGS L: The Old Testament reading for The Last Sunday of the Church year is from Ezekiel chapter thirty-four. 11 "'For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will search for my sheep and look after them. 12 As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness. 13 I will bring them out from the nations and gather them from the countries, and I will bring them into their own land. I will pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines and in all the settlements in the land. 14 I will tend them in a good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel will be their grazing land. There they will lie down in good grazing land, and there they will feed in a rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. 15 I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down, declares the Sovereign Lord. 16 I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy. I will shepherd the flock with justice. 20 "'Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says to them: See, I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. 21 Because you shove with flank and shoulder, butting all the weak sheep with your horns until you have driven them away, 22 I will save my flock, and they will no longer be plundered. I will judge between one sheep and another. 23 I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend them; he will tend them and be their shepherd. 24 I the Lord will be their God, and my servant David will be prince among them. I the Lord have spoken. Ezekiel 34:20-24 NIV L: C: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. L: The Epistle reading is from 1 Corinthians chapter fifteen. 20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 23 But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. 24 Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and 21 -3- Redeemer Lutheran Church 869 7th Avenue SE Rochester, MN 55904 power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 27 For he "has put everything under his feet." Now when it says that "everything" has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ. 28 When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all. 1 Corinthians 15:20-28 NIV L: C: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. (Please stand.) (*) RESPONSE (*) HOLY GOSPEL L: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-fifth chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. 31 "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 "Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. ' 37 "Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you? ' 44 "They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you? The September 2014, Mayo Clinic Health Letter offers comments on “Lifestyle as Medicine” as related to diabetes, stating that with diabetes of any type, keeping your blood glucose levels in control is important. Excess glucose in the blood stream damages blood vessels and nerves, leading to problems such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, eye damage and nerve damage. Improvement in diet and physical activity (with an additional goal of modest weight reduction) is the foundation of Type 2 diabetes therapy. A serious commitment to these changes may allow some people to delay drug therapy or forego it altogether. Research suggests that lifestyle changes have an important effect on long-term blood glucose control. This is especially true for adults older than 60. Even if you do not need medication, lifestyle improvements still provide a major boost in terms of blood glucose control, helping you keep the use of medication to a minimum. The entire Stephen Ministry team joins with you in giving thanks to God for the many blessings He has given to each of us and continues to give us through His Son, Jesus Christ. We ask those of you who have been gifted with compassion, encouragement, faith and mercy, to seriously and prayerfully consider becoming a Stephen Minister. A new training class is scheduled to begin in January where those gifts can be nurtured and built up for service to those experiencing a difficult challenge in life. For more information about the Stephen Ministry program or the class please call Pastor Adam Koglin, (507) 289-5147. “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17 LOOSE COIN OFFERINGS Loose coins for the final quarter of the year help to support the ministry of the Lutheran Association of Missionary Pilots. Acts 1:8 Simeon: Making Him Known in our daily lives. BIBLE VERSE OF THE WEEK: For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 1 Corinthians 15:22 POINTS TO PONDER THIS WEEK: If you knew for sure that the world would end tomorrow. . . What feelings would you have? What would you do? What difference does it make that you are a Christian? This is the last Sunday of the Church year before we begin again with Advent. Have you noƟced all the Scripture readings talking about Christ coming back again, the bridegroom and the virgins, the servant and the gold, the sheep and the goats? Christ is coming, we just don’t know when. We are called to be prepared, to cherish the precious giŌ that God has given us, our faith, and to make him known to others so they too may enter with joy into His kingdom. Today’s hymns focus on peace and hope. To rest in peace through God’s daily presence in our lives (Lord of All Hopefulness – 738), to take comfort in the price Christ paid on the cross that one day our faith will be sight (When Peace Like a River – 763), to hope and expect that Jesus will come again and the earth will be restored to perfect beauty with no sin (Rejoice, Rejoice, Believers – 515), and to have no fear, because God has chosen you to be in His Kingdom (Have No Fear, LiƩle Flock – 735). Take it Home Peace in Christ. Christ’s Peace. What does that mean to you? We live in a world of acƟvity, business, hurry, stress, worry, and pressure. Some of you may feel the peace of Christ is a ficƟonal thing. It makes me sad to see so many people living life at a crazy pace without Christ’s peace. I would like to suggest that the peace of Christ is NOT about the pace of your life, how busy you are or how much stress you are under. You do not have to live in a monastery to experience this blessed giŌ of God! No maƩer how fast your life is going the peace of Christ can be your constant companion. It would be beƩer for all of us if we chose to live life in a smarter healthier way but God does not withhold His peace unƟl we slow down. Try this at home, work or while in line at a store this Ɵme of year, take a slow deep breath and say something like, “Thank you for that breath God, Thank you for your peace.” And then just take 10 seconds to rest in His peace. Teach this to your children, grandkids, spouse, or loved one. Receive God’s peace and help others receive it as well!
