Today is the first day of Advent. This is the season of our year that always begins the fourth
Sunday before Christmas. Advent is not about parties, shopping, Santa, decorations, cards and
stressing. It is about preparing ourselves to receive Jesus, Our Saviour, into our lives. Advent is
the expectant waiting, hopeful anticipating and cheerful preparation of God breaking into our
lives in all moments, all places, all times – past, future, and present. We commemorate the
birth of Jesus, prepare for Jesus’ return, and welcome God into our lives every day. Advent
prepares us for all these events, reminds us there is a joy in waiting, and it begins the Church
year.
To mark this special season we are going to incorporate two changes to our Sunday Masses
during Advent. Firstly, each week we are going to sing the hymn “Oh Come, Oh Come
Emmanuel” as the Processional hymn, with the refrain being sung again after the Penitential
Act. Then secondly, music will be played continuously while the Prayers of Intercession are
read, and after each prayer, there will be a sung call and a sung response. This is a beautiful
way of reminding us that we are in the Advent season preparing ourselves to joyfully receive
the One we love.
A Taste of Taizé
Taizé is a tiny village in France. Since 1940, it has been home to an ecumenical community of
Brothers who pray very simply through chant. During wartime, Br Roger established this
community as a place of welcome for Jews who were fleeing the Nazis. Taizé has always had
a special solidarity with human suffering.
Today, the Community has grown to over a hundred brothers, Catholic and Protestant, from
thirty nations. Taizé is, in itself, a symbol of reconciliation. The Brothers take special interest
in the poor and in the youth who flock to Taizé to reflect on their lives and join in the sung
prayer.
Short mantra-like songs create a relaxing style of prayer. As the words are repeated, their
reality gradually penetrates our whole being. Singing becomes a way of listening to God. The
simplicity and repetition allows us to wait attentively on God. These chants echo within us
even beyond the actual time of prayer.

Prayer as ‘watching’, awakening and listening enables us to re-center our desires and to
synchronize them with the love that we need to face difficult situations in our lives. This
prayer-style is particularly suited to Advent – the Season of hope, joyous expectation and
waiting. Taste this beautiful prayer at OLR on Tuesdays 2nd and 9th Dec at 7pm.

Moving On
Some people come into our lives and leave footprints on our hearts and we are never ever the
same (Flavia). This is how I feel about the wonderful people in this parish. Last week I
received my marching orders. I have now been appointed as the Assistant Priest at Redcliffe
Parish starting January 4, 2015. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here, especially the last
three months of being asked by the Archbishop to lead the parish. It has been absolutely
wonderful journeying with you. Your faith and love inspires me. Thank you so much!
With deep gratitude,
Father Bryan
