As I had said in my homilies last weekend, these are very beautiful weeks of the year, preparing for the Coming of the Christ. But, may we remember, we are not preparing for Christmas; but, rather, we are preparing for when the Christ will come to take us home to the Kingdom of His Father. We focus on the message of John the Baptist, “Prepare the Way of the Lord! Make straight His path!” John’s message challenges us very deeply: if the Christ were to come today and take us home to the Kingdom, are we prepared? Are we ready? Advent is that wonderful time of the year that empowers us to change in our lives what needs to be changed, for the sake of our salvation … to add something to our lives that should be there, in order to foster true discipleship … and, also, to celebrate in our lives what has always been there, such as the power of the Holy Spirit, to live as we have been called. With all that in mind, how has Advent been so far? This weekend, we put in the bulletins the Spiritual & Annual report of St. Jude the Apostle Church, for the fiscal year July 1, 2013-June 30, 2014. We are very happy to report a significant increase in family registrations, now up to 1577. If you remember, in the first half of 2013, Deacon Dick Brogdon lead a very aggressive campaign of getting an accurate census of the parish … for the records had not been purged in close to 20 years, removing over 500 registrations of people who left the parish, or never responded, etc. But, since January of 2012, we have had over 250 new family registrations! However, baptisms are down from years past, as well as weddings. For the past 2 years, the number of funerals is around 20 less, each year, than we normally have. You will see that we didn’t have anybody confirmed in that time … because we had Confirmation in May of 2013, and not again until September of 2014. However, we confirmed around 60 kids each year. Even with a huge increase in registrations, the Offertory collection is still far from impressive … in fact, it is down about $5,900 from the year before. What has been saving us has been our fundraising efforts and the special gifts of many generous people, which has helped us to balance the budget. We do not have a Parochial Vicar anymore, and we have a “bare-bones” staff in the office, who are working their heads off to keep up … and, they are! I inherited a large payroll here when I came. We have shaved it down, so that our budgets would be balanced on both sides of the parking lot. However, in the next year, I do hope to bring a Pastoral Minister or Assistant to the team here, to help me with all the ministries and pastoral duties that the parochial vicars used to do here. Fr. Jason and I are fine with the Masses. It just can get real busy from Monday-Friday, and there is much to do here! Please take a look at these, and if you have any questions, I would be happy to answer them as best I can! I got together with Msgr. Kriegel from St. Patrick’s this past week, and we are going to partner with them on a great ministry in February. St. Patrick’s and St. Jude’s will be sponsoring a Homeless Shelter for about 60 people each night from February 11th to the 24th. The shelter will be held in the Social Center of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Nativity at German and Front Streets. In light of the teachings of Pope Francis, Msgr. Kriegel and I both felt this is a powerful expression of his challenges to us, while bringing comfort and hope to people in our own community, in the dead of winter. We are going to be looking for volunteers who would be willing to serve on one of 3 shifts each night: 7 – 11 PM, 11 PM- 3 AM, & 3 -7:30 AM. In addition, we will be in need of an evening meal for about 60 people to be served at 7:30 PM. The meal can be very simple, such as soup or chili, with a roll and beverage. We would, also, like to serve a simple breakfast, perhaps rolls or doughnuts. Coffee will be provided. At a recent meeting of both the Erie East and West Deaneries, we talked about what the local church can do to help the poor, and how we can respond to Pope Francis’ call that we care for those who cannot care for themselves. We feel this is the perfect response! Please talk to your families and friends, and ask each other who can help with this joint venture. Deacon Dick Brogdon will be our “point person” on this, and we will be asking you to commit very soon. Please pray about helping in this … even if it is a great sacrifice. I can’t imagine having to look for a shelter to go to every night during a winter like this … OLCS Principal Stephen Nemenz, Religious Education Coordinator Jesse Spanogle, and I are attending the National Catholic Youth Ministers Conference this weekend in San Antonio. There will be some great workshops and keynote speakers on ministering to young people in today’s society and today’s Church. Thank you, especially, to Msgr. Tom McSweeney for coming home to St. Jude’s, and giving Fr. Jason some help with the Masses! Have a great Advent! Fr. D December 7, 2014 Second Sunday of Advent Celebrating Advent as a Parish and School Community Over 200 came together in prayer and blessing to begin the Advent Season. There are 5400 lights on the tree in memory/ honor of loved ones. We are grateful to Dobrich Electric for allowing their workers to string the lights to the top of the tree and completely around the tree. The many volunteers from both parish and school came together as one. Each cookie served was homemade with love. Celebrating Family Thank you for allowing a wonderful beginning into the Advent Season. The gift that keeps on giving… Cr ea ti ng We are taking the time to invite you over the Christmas aL season to make a gift to parish/school. It is a way for all of us as tin to count our many blessings and make a difference. The letter is gI mp from the heart and the invitation to partner with us showcased in the ac many faces on the brochure tells a story. Our Christmas wish is for both t… our parish and school to embrace this opportunity in raising $70,000 together.
