CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
Historically November has
shown to be a quite month financially for the Club and this
year is no exception. As we
take a deep breath from the
preceding months we prepare
for the Christmas and New
Year festivities.
Your new Board has been
busy formulating the process
for the next stage of our
growth strategy. The Strategic
Plan has been revised for a
further 5 years with the pattern
of sensible expenditure based
on income without spending
more than we earn. The new
Board Management Structure
is devised to put the strengths
of Directors in appropriate responsibilities.
Members will also notice
Bowls Club exposure through
outlets such as the post office,
newsagents, café’s, and many
more, via the Coolum TV project, designed and managed
by Appmosphere TV.
It is regrettable news that we
must announce that MK Floors
are not in a position to sponsor
the Mk Floors Invitational Pairs
this coming Australia Day
weekend. We acknowledge
the decision of the major corporate sponsor and thank
them for their support since
2008.

Melbourne Cup Day
Men’s President
Division 5 Pennant players travelled to
McKenzie Park for the SEQ Finals on November 1st & 2nd. The results weren’t as we expected and we came away with only one win.
Whilst disappointed, the boys can be proud of
their achievements in reaching the playoffs.
Division 3 & 4 Finals were once again held at
Coolum on 8 & 9 November and it was another
huge weekend for the club. The greens were
in wonderful condition and the support of the
ladies, bar staff, catering and volunteers made
for a highly successful tournament. Thank you
all.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Fours have been run and won by Jack
Smith, John Lennon, David Billington and Troy
Somerville in an epic final against Terry Walsh,
David Balchin, Greg Brown and Greg Dale.
A very hot and gusty wind made conditions extremely difficult and it came down to scores
being all square after 21 ends. A close bowl
from John Lennon on an extra end survived all
attempts to move it and proved to be the
match winner.
Singles began on 29 & 30 November. Please
ensure you have a marker for your first game.
NIGHT PENNANT
We continue to lead our section and are confident of playing the final in mid December. Another Pennant flag is within our grasp.
SUPER CHALLENGE & PREMIER 7’s
We have finally received the draw for both
competitions, with Super Challenge starting off
with a double header, away to North
Toowoomba on 17 January is followed by a
home game against Kawana on 18 January.
Premier 7’s Division 3 are home to Windsor
ladies on 11 January and Division 5 away to
Pine rivers on 10 January.

INVITATION PAIRS
A decision by MK Floors to withdraw their
sponsorship has opened the door for North
Shore Realty to become our major sponsor.
We expect a very high level of competition on
24 & 25 January. More details next month.
INVISIT
The very popular Repat bowlers will be here on
December 12, 13 & 14. Please ensure they
receive our normal warm welcome.
Wishing you all a happy and safe Christmas.
Until next time, take care and enjoy your bowls.

Hi Bowlers,
My name is Lee Bartley & I joined Coolum Bowls
Club a year ago. I was proudly coached by Rob
Spalding and I am enjoying my first year of bowls.
Last year I completed my Certificate IV in Massage
Therapy and I am currently in my last semester of a
Diploma of Remedial Massage. I recently opened
my massage studio at home and would like to invite
bowlers and their families to come and experience a
nurturing treatment at a reasonable price. We have a
range of treatments available which include:
 Remedial Massage—for those specific sore
spots or problem areas
 Swedish Massage—a full body massage using a
researched routine method
 Relaxation Massage—an intuitive massage using a combination of styles including Hawaiian
 Reflexology—total relaxation focusing on the
feet and specific areas on the body
Studio Times:
Wednesday 12—6pm
Thursday 9am—6pm
Friday 9am—6pm
Other times/days by negotiation. I look forward to
meeting you in the studio or on the green.
Kind regards,
Lee

GORDON SARGENT - Bowls. 1950
Delivery
The bowl must be rolled off the fingers close to
the front of the mat and to the surface of the
green. It must not be thrown or bumped otherwise it will not run smoothly and lack consistency in both length and width. In other words
the bowl should be “stroked” away without
hurry and with rhythm.
Stand and Deliver!
The swing back should be slow and deliberate as
should the forward swing. There should be no
appreciable hesitation at the top of the backswing. The length of the step to be taken will
vary slightly according to the pace of the green.
The Trail
Probably the most difficult shot in the game is
the trail. The general plan will be that if the trail
or yard on shot fails to achieve the main objective it will run into position and not into the
ditch. Chances of success with the trail are limited and a margin of an inch either way may result in flicking the jack in the opposite direction
to that desired.
Drives
Experienced drivers will find it more profitable
to employ a drive than a draw on a fast green to
beat a close enemy counter. Contrary to the rule
for the draw play a drive will swing less on a
fast green than a holding surface. Practice is
essential for the drive shot as for any other shot.

Singles/ Leading.
Don’t allow an opponent to put you off the hand
you prefer to play. Some players continually
(and for no good reason) change from backhand
to forehand and vice-versa. An important point
in singles play and one much neglected by the
majority is the frequent inspection of the head.
Team Work
It is useless to enter a competition as four separate individuals, each determined to play his
own game. Each member of the team has an
equal contribution to make towards the points
scored, although the final responsibility must
rest upon the skip. Loyalty of the other three is
imperative if good result are to follow.
Skipping
A skip must have skill in all the shots. Sound
judgement is important in planning ahead and
directing his players according to their capability. He should sum up his opponents and endeavour to take advantage of any weaknesses apparent. Above all he should not compromise between two opinions, otherwise the shot will be a
failure.
Hints to All Four
Nothing is more irritating to a skip if he gives instructions only to find his 2nd or 3rd are absent
without leave. Absentees are generally to be
found playing the “one-armed bandit” or swapping yarns with a hard case on the adjoining
rink.
