Grounds Department Prepares for Winter Weather
As winter arrives, the SOMC Grounds Department would like to offer
some friendly reminders to help employees stay safe.
1.
Always assume that the ground will be slick when temperatures are below freezing.
2.
The shortest distance between two points may be a straight line, but
the safest way usually takes longer. Pay attention to what areas and
roads have been treated and try to follow those paths.
3.
Proper footwear is essential to traveling safely in winter weather. Wear safe
footwear to work and change into other shoes once you arrive to your office.
As always, the Grounds Department will do their best to provide the safest
environment when winter weather occurs. They have reviewed their processes
and modified their response plan based on lessons learned last winter.
Some things the department has done to prepare for this winter include:
1.
Modifying the policy to close the top level of parking garages when winter weather occurs.
2.
Providing resources at extended sites so staff can perform initial treatment of critical areas.
3.
Modifying the response plan and adding provision for additional manpower when necessary.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to give Grounds a call at ext. 8032.

Thanks for your kindness!
I would like to extend a great big thank you to all of the employees who recently brought
in items to be donated to the homeless shelters of Scioto County. It just goes to show
how wonderful and kind-hearted the staff members are at SOMC. Thanks to your
contributions, there will now be very grateful people who will have a little more warmth
in their hearts during the cold winter nights. Thank you, SOMC! —Brenda Gibson, MRI

SOMC Receives Silver Level
Healthy Worksite Award
Southern Ohio Medical Center was recently recognized
for their outstanding efforts toward employee health
and fitness, receiving the 2014 Silver Level Healthy
Worksite Award presented by the Ohio Department of
Health (ODH) and the Healthy Ohio Business Council (HOBC).
A total of 71 companies, cities, and townships applied for the 2014 Healthy Worksite
awards, which recognize Ohio employers who demonstrate a commitment to employee
wellness through comprehensive worksite health promotion and wellness programs.
“Poor nutrition, inactive and sedentary lifestyles, tobacco use, and alcohol and drug use limit our
potential to be productive Ohioans. This is why a comprehensive approach to preventive health
and wellness at worksites is an essential part of improving both the health of Ohioans and the
overall success of our state,” Dr. Andrew Wapner, chief of the Bureau of Healthy Ohio at ODH, said.
“Healthy Ohio Healthy Worksite Award winners are leading the way in this effort
by making a healthy work environment a priority for their employees.”
Applicants are scored on how well their wellness programs facilitate and encourage
employee health, enhance productivity, and ensure a healthy work environment.
“In terms of health and wellness, SOMC strives to be the leading example not just to
our employees, but for other employers and the community,” April Sanders, manager
of SOMC Employee Health and Wellness said. “We work to encourage a healthy
community that will result in our children and their families living long and happy
lives. We’re glad to be making strides both in and outside our workforce.”
The Healthy Worksite awards are sponsored by Provant, a leader in population health management
strategies and customized worksite wellness services that support employee well-being and
productivity and healthcare cost containment. For more information about the Healthy Ohio Healthy
Worksite Award program, please visit http://www.healthy.ohio.gov/en/businesses/howkawd.aspx.
