Workforce Development is offering free educational classes for employees as follows: had zero active TB cases, while Scioto County only had one active TB case. In 2014, SOMC volume of active TB cases, SOMC has once again been deemed a “low risk” facility. “Low risk” facilities are not required to perform TB testing on all employees—only those who meet certain criteria. However, all employees must complete education during the month of February. Below are the requirements for the 2015 TB Screening Program: • To be compliant and eligible for a pay increase and annual bonus, all employees are required to complete the annual TB Education and TB Questionnaire, which will be available through NetLearning beginning Monday, Jan. 26. • SOMC Employee Health and Wellness will evaluate each questionnaire and contact employees who answered yes to any question on the questionnaire. • After consultation, additional testing may be required for those employees. To allow adequate time for additional testing, employees must complete the TB Questionnaire before Feb. 22, 2015. If TB testing is required, employees must complete the test by Feb. 28, 2015. It is each employee’s responsibility to be available for additional testing, should it be required. We ask that you complete the education and questionnaire as early as possible. If you have any questions about the program, please contact April Sanders at ext. 8021. Gampp Receives WOCN Certification Brandy Gampp, RN, BSN, inpatient nurse of Wound and Skin Services at Southern Ohio Medical Center, recently obtained certification as a Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse (CWOCN). Gampp is the first and only nurse at SOMC to obtain this prestigious certification, which is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification and the National Commission for Certifying Agencies. She is also the only nurse in the local area to receive such a distinction. “To be eligible to sit for the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing Certification Board (WOCN-CB) exam, I was required to complete classes on foundation basics, wounds, ostomy, and continence, and obtain 150 clinical hours at an accredited WOCN facility,” Gampp explained. “The closest and only facility with a preceptor opening was the Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital (a level-one trauma center) in Indianapolis, so I packed up my 5th-wheel camper and headed west.” Gampp said her month-long stay on an Indiana campground was challenging, but worth any sacrifice, because she was able to work with an experienced team of WOC nurses whose highlevel, full scope of clinical practice and hands-on training would be difficult to match elsewhere. “It was a grueling work schedule, and hard to be away from my family for such a long time, but the experience I gained during this process was truly immeasurable,” she said. “I studied with some of the most wonderful, qualified clinicians and I’m so proud to now offer this high-level of care to our patients.” The WOCN-CB began certifying nurses in 1978 as a way of recognizing and differentiating the value of expert nurses from those at an entry level. Earning board certification is a voluntary process that requires consistent evaluations of a nurse’s professional knowledge and skills. It also ensures that a nurse is knowledgeable and well-qualified to provide specialized care to meet patients’ wound, ostomy, and continence needs. “Brandy’s commitment to complete this process provides SOMC with the expertise necessary to deliver the highest standard of wound care and safety,” Neva Moore, program director of the SOMC Wound Healing Center, said. “We are so proud of her accomplishment and her unwavering dedication to her field.” “None of this would have been possible without support and encouragement from our nursing leaders at SOMC,” Gampp added. “From writing letters of recommendation, to schedule adjustments, it was a team effort. One person cannot achieve such an accomplishment on their own, and I have been empowered by the leaders in this organization. I truly thank everyone for their help along the way.” 4 Health & Wellness SOMC Recognized as AHA Fit-Friendly Worksite SOMC has been recognized as a Platinum-Level Fit-Friendly Worksite by the American Heart Association for helping employees eat better and move more. Register for Weight Watchers at Work “Physical activity and employee wellness are important priorities at SOMC. We are very New sessions of Weight Watchers at Work will begin this February (depending on interest and participation). Cost of the program is $156, which can be paid through payroll deduction, credit card, debit card, or cash. For more information, please call Karen Walburn at ext. 6500. “We’re committed to providing the best workplace environment possible. This distinction honored and excited to be recognized by the American Heart Association as a Platinum-Level Fit-Friendly Worksite,” April Sanders, manager of SOMC Employee Health and Wellness, said. will benefit our employees’ health and produce even more positive results overall.” Platinum-level Fit-Friendly employers must prove that they are working to promote a wellness culture in the workplace by offering physical activity options at work, increasing healthy eating options, and demonstrating measurable outcomes related to workplace wellness. SOMC has met these goals by creating the Employee Health and Fitness Room, making changes to options offered in the cafeteria, and providing more heath and wellness learning opportunities throughout the year. The AHA’s Fit-Friendly Worksites program is a catalyst for positive change. Statistics show that employers are losing an estimated $225.8 billion a year because of healthcare expenses and health-related losses in productivity. Many adults spend most of their waking hours at sedentary jobs, which raises their risk for a host of medical problems, including obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes. The AHA is working to change corporate cultures by motivating employees to exercise and start walking, which has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. “Even people who haven’t exercised regularly until middle age can reap significant benefits by starting a walking program,” Sanders said. “A study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that some adults may gain two hours of life expectancy for every hour of regular, vigorous exercise they performed, so it’s never to late to start.” For more information about all of the Fit-Friendly Worksites, visit heart.org/worksitewellness. New Classes at Lucasville LIFE Center The Lucasville LIFE Center facility has added two new fitness classes to its weekly line-up. Body Blast will take place at 4 p.m. every Monday, while Taboxing will take place at 5:35 p.m. every Monday. Body Blast is a mix of cardio, toning, and core and changes based on the students who attend. Taboxing consists of high-intensity interval training, mixing Tabata, cardio boxing, core and toning. For more information about either class, contact the LIFE Center at 574-4022. 5 Health & Wellness continued ForeverFit’s February Education Session ForeverFit participants are invited to attend the educational session, “Your Path to Getting Healthy and Forever Fit,” which will take place at 12 p.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, and at 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11 in Education Room 4. Each session will last approximately 30 minutes and registration is not required. This session will discuss the importance of knowing your numbers, keeping logs, and setting goals. It will also discuss popular smart-phone apps available to assist in tracking your wellness progress. If you are unable to attend this month’s session, the learning materials will be available on Netlearning the following week. If you have any questions or concerns, please call Employee Health and Wellness at ext. 8432. Help Your Kids Get Healthy and Fit! The SOMC Portsmouth LIFE Center is now offering a child-friendly program called “FitKids” from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. The program is youth-focused and open to children ages 6-13. The class offers fun, functional training in a non-competitive environment to get kids started on a lifelong journey to health and fitness. Participants will build strong bodies, while having a blast! The LIFE Center is now also offering a kid’s punch card. This card allows the child to workout along side a parent or guardian during many of the group fitness classes at the LIFE Center. For more information about either opportunity, please call the LIFE Center at ext. 7650. 6 Health & Wellness continued tips of the month get moving Many people view the act of exercising as a chore, or something they don’t want to do. However, once they experience the benefits of exercise, it becomes less of a chore and more of a tool to help them look and feel better. Frequent and regular physical exercise is recommended for people of all ages because it boosts the immune system and helps protect against conditions such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and other major illnesses. In fact, it’s even known to cut your risk of major chronic illnesses/diseases by up to 50 percent, and reduce your risk of early death by up to 30 percent. Other benefits of exercising on a regular basis include: »» »» »» »» »» »» Improved mental health Boost of self-esteem/confidence Enhanced sleep quality and energy level Lowered risk of stress and depression Improved sex drive Protection against dementia and Alzheimer’s disease Having trouble getting started? Get on track by setting exercise goals. First ask yourself the following questions: »» »» »» »» »» »» What activities have I been successful at before? What things will I enjoy doing? What equipment do I have or can I access? What do I want to achieve? What am I physically able to do? What is my current fitness level? Then be sure to do the following: »» »» »» Write down your goals; unwritten goals tend to be vague and easy to forget. Make your goals clear and measurable. Review and adjust your goals as needed. If you’re still having trouble setting or meeting your goals, contact Employee Health and Wellness to schedule a one-on-one appointment.
