Dear parishioners,
[This message is being written on Friday, December 12, which is the date it is due to the bulletin vendor.]
The parish’s annual Advent penance service will be this Tuesday, December 23, at 7:45 p.m., in St. Raphael Church
(after the 7:00 p.m. daily Mass). The liturgy will include readings, prayers, a homily, an examination of conscience, and individual confessions. Six or seven priests will hear confessions that evening.
Our parish’s two, annual, wall calendars are available – starting last weekend (December 13-14) – at the exits of
each of our two churches. On your behalf, I extend our thanks to Buklad Memorial Homes and Kingston & Kemp Funeral
Home for generously paying for and providing the 2015 wall calendars for our parishioners.
The Common Policy of the five Latin-rite (Roman Catholic) dioceses of New Jersey states that there must be twelve
months of marriage preparation for each couple who desires to be married in the Church. When you become aware that someone is thinking of getting married in the Church, would you please let them (or their parents) know that they should make an
appointment with the parish priest or deacon so they can book the proposed wedding date and time in the parish Mass book
before they reserve (and place a deposit with) a reception hall, etc.
On a recent Sunday morning, the parish office received a phone call from a person whose relative was in hospice and
wanted a priest to come right away to anoint the relative because they were close to death. The receptionist explained that it
was Sunday morning and the priests were busy saying Mass. If you know someone whose relative is seriously ill (including on
hospice), please let them know that the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick (formerly the Sacrament of Extreme Unction) is for
Catholics who are age seven or older and “in danger due to sickness or old age” and therefore they do not have to wait till the
person is on their deathbed. Sometimes you cannot get a priest at the last minute (due to Mass, confessions, meetings, etc.).
When a person goes on hospice, they can be anointed. Even if not on hospice, you can be anointed in various other situations,
including if you are seriously ill or if you are going to the hospital for surgery or if you are in a nursing home.
Next Sunday, December 28, will be the thirtieth anniversary of Fr. Gene’s ordination to the priesthood. As you
know (from items in previous bulletins), there will be a celebration the day before -- this Saturday, December 27 – in the parish
center, following the 5:00 Mass. I had planned to concelebrate the Mass, but unfortunately I will not be able to attend, because
of a family obligation. (My four out-of-state siblings and their families will be in New Jersey that day to join me and my three
surviving, fellow, in-state siblings and their families and our 84-year-old father for our first Christmas together since 2005 –
four months before our mother died.) I have explained to Fr. Gene that I am very sorry that I will not be able to concelebrate
the 5:00 Mass and attend the dinner-dance that will follow. During my two and a half years as pastor, it has been a joy to work
with Fr. Gene and to share the priests’ residence (in the rectory) with him (and with Fr. Jim since July 1, 2013). (Fr. Jim will
be saying the 4:00 Mass in Holy Angels Church, but will attend the dinner-dance.) Ad multos annos.
This Wednesday – Christmas Eve – in St. Raphael Church, there will be overflow seating (in the All Purpose Room
[APR], below the church) for the 4:00 vigil Mass. The Mass attendees in the APR will be able to watch, listen to, and participate in the Mass (that is being celebrated upstairs) via a closed-circuit monitor and speakers. At Communion time, ushers will
lead the people in the APR up the stairs and into the nave, so they can receive Jesus the Christ-Child in Holy Communion in
the main body of the beautifully decorated church.
After we begin the season of Christmas this Wednesday at 4:00 pm (with a vigil Mass in each of our parish’s two
churches), I invite you to continue the celebration of Christmas next Sunday, December 28, at our parish’s fifth annual Christmas Carol Festival. (Details are on page 5). May you and your loved ones have a holy and joyful Christmas Day and Octave
of Christmas.

From Monday, December 1, through Sunday, April 5— Holy Communion is being distributed under only one species (the Sacred Host) instead of both species (the Sacred
Host and the Precious Blood), because of the flu season.
Under the principle of concomitance, we receive all of Jesus—Body, Blood, soul, and divinity, whole and entire—
under either species. Thus, we do not have to receive both
species at Communion.

30th Anniversary of Priestly Ordination

are invited to celebrate Fr. Gene Daguplo’s 30th anniversary of priestly ordination to honor his 30 years of service
as a priest and his service to our parish and the community. Don’t miss this special event to show our love and
gratitude to our beloved priest, Fr. Gene. Enjoy an evening of fun with entertainment like good wishes, singing,
musical presentation and, of course, dancing all night as
one of Fr. Gene’s favorite entertainment.

POT LUCK DESSERTS
We, the 30th Anniversary Committee are having a potluck dessert for the celebration of Fr. Gene Daguplo's

5th Annual Christmas Carol Festival

UPDATE from NET missionary, SAM WONG
Hello and Merry Christmas! My name is Sam Wong. I am a parishioner
of St. Raphael-Holy Angels Parish and have been on a mission trip with
NET Ministries for the past five months. As you remember, I held a
fundraiser appeal in July (in both churches) before I left for my yearlong trip. Because I will be home for Christmas, I am showing a presentation on our ministry in the narthex after each Mass on December 2021. I am not looking for more donations; I am just sharing my experience with my parish community.

NEW YEAR’S EVE GALA
Come and spend New Year’s Eve with our parish family.
The evening will begin with prayer, thanking God for His
bounteous blessings, followed by a fantastic dinner catered by Rosa’s. DJ Mike Rosica will keep us hopping until
1:00 am. Complimentary beer, wine, and soda will add to
the warmth of the evening. At midnight, noisemakers and
champagne will top off the festivities. Finally, a continental
breakfast will be served to end the evening.
The doors of the parish center open at 7:00 pm, dinner
is served at 7:30 pm,and the cost is only $45 per person.

PERPETUAL ADORATION CHAPEL
Our parish is blessed to have a perpetual adoration chapel,
which was founded on November 1, 2010, by our founding pastor, the Reverend Jeffrey J. Kegley. The chapel is in the Saint
John Paul II Spiritual Center (former convent), which is located
on the driveway that leads from South Broad Street to St. Raphael Church. Adorers come from our parish and our sister parishes — twenty-four hours a day -- to adore and spend time with our
Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in the Blessed Sacrament in the
monstrance on the altar. Because the scheduled adorers (who
commit to one of the 168 hours each week) sometimes move,
get sick, or go away on vacation or to weddings, etc., we always
need more adorers (for a particular hour each week or as a
substitute). If you are able to make a weekly commitment or be
a substitute, please see the sign-up form (and the notice below
it) on Page 10.

ADVENT
The season of Advent and our journey of faith as a community…
On the morning of Monday, December 1, 2014, Saint Raphael School faculty, students, and staff came together
as a faith community to pray, reflect, and prepare our hearts and minds for the birth of our Savior, Jesus
Christ. Advent is a time of prayerful preparation and reflection, a “Time of Light … a Time of Hope”. Christ is our
LIGHT and our HOPE. As we live in the hope of God’s promise, Christ’s light provides growth and gives guidance for each step we take on life’s journey. We look forward to sharing this prayer-filled experience as a
school community.
To quiet the room and prepare for our morning prayer, all are called to worship by the soft ringing of chimes. On
the first day of each week, there is a reading for that week’s candle. Each day Scripture, as it relates to the Jesse Tree, is read. Then the appropriate candle is lit.
First Week… We light the Prophecy Candle, the Candle of Hope.
Second Week… We light the Bethlehem Candle, the Candle of Faith.
Third Week… We light the Shepherd Candle, the Candle of Joy.
Fourth Week… We light the Angel Candle, the Candle of Love.
Our art teacher, Mrs. Kathleen Gronostajski, has designed a beautiful ornament, which students in their art classes created. The ornament depicts the reading of the day. After reflection and prayer, students place the ornament on the Jesse Tree, which is located in the school hallway to the right of the church entrance.
It is a wonderful way to start the day during the season of advent.

With nearly empty shelves, our pantry needs many donations of
all kinds of non-perishable food to help us restock. Gratefully
accepted and especially needed are pasta, rice, spaghetti sauce ,
beans, soup, healthy snacks, juice, canned meat and fish, personal care and household cleaning items. Perhaps you could
consider bringing an item with you when you come to Mass?
Even one can of soup or box of macaroni would boost our supplies. There are many sales running right now in local markets.

NURSING HOME
Tuesday, January 13, 6:15 - 8:00 pm. Also, for more than 25 years, our parish has volunteered on the second Tuesday of every month to sponsor Bingo
parties for the nursing home residents, first at the Mercer County Geriatric Center (MCGC), and then at MCGC’s successor Hamilton Grove Healthcare. We
usually have a themed party and provide refreshments and special prizes/gifts,
in addition to our help with Bingo. The volunteers’ smiles and helping hands are
truly appreciated by the residents. In January we have a Keep Warm Bingo with
afghans, hats, scarves and, gloves as our special prizes. Hope you will considering joining us.
Acrylic yarn. We will be collecting donations through December 18. One of our
parishioners uses these donations to crochet items for nursing home residents
and TASK patrons in need. Please call Kathy Wooley at 585-4307 for drop off/
pick up information.
TRENTON AREA SOUP KITCHEN
Wednesday, December 31, 10:00 am - 1:15 pm. Our parish has volunteered
for more than 25 years to serve at the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen whenever
there is a fifth-Wednesday in the month. Our next serving commitment falls on
New Year’s Eve. What better way to end the year than by helping others? Meet
in the St. Raphael parking lot no later than 10:00 am for carpooling to TASK.

Imagine how Mary felt at the birth of Jesus: excited,
awed, frightened. Deep faith was her light in the darkness, for Jesus was born during the night of the year
when darkness is the longest. In faith is found the real, lasting,
and deep joy of Christmas.
This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de
Paul was able to bring Christmas to the hearts of the poor, by
assisting families, providing in food, in gifts, and for utility and
rent bills.

circumstances.

Leading Teens Closer To Christ!
HOW CAN THIS BE?
“But how can this be?”, this is the question that Miriam of Nazareth asks when invited by the
Archangel Gabriel to become the Mother of God. Mary is not having a faith crisis but wonders
how it might happen, (as she was a virgin and had not known man). It is both a natural and a
good question to ask on so many levels. Unlike the Blessed Mother, we might have no problem
believing that Almighty God can enter time and space even though He is above and beyond all
things. We might also have the faith in God that He could limit himself in such a way as to enter
our time and space as a completely dependent baby. We might not understand how exactly He
does what He does, and we may not fully comprehend why He does what He does, but we can
at least believe that He does it! The Angel is quick to point out that Jesus comes into our world
through and by the power of the Holy Spirit. This is the answer to the question of faith that Mary
poses. This is the answer that the angel gives each one of us when we wonder about God enterCHRISTMAS

every time we gather to celebrate the Eucharist and each time we hear the priest utter the words
of the rite at the epiclesis, we experience the same Spirit who hovered over the waters of the
abyss, bringing creation from chaos. We experience the same Spirit who hovered over the
Blessed Virgin making her the Mother of the Messiah and it is the same Spirit who hovers over

REFLECTION
Dear Parishioners,
Please plan on attending the annual Christmas concert, presented
by the parish music ministry, on January 4, 2015, at 7:00 pm in Saint
Raphael Church. This joyous celebration will include Heaven’s Echo,
the Adult Choir, Bell Choir and Contemporary Ensemble. This hourlong program will conclude with refreshments in the church narthex.
In the Gospel on this Fourth Sunday of Advent, we hear Mary proclaim “Behold, I am the handmaid of the lord. May it be done to me
according to your word.”
Mary is the model of the Church for all believers. The Church calls
us to embrace her humble submission to the Lord’s will and accept
whatever comes our way - despite hardships. Mary’s obedience and
faith stand as qualities to be imitated and her receptivity to the Holy
Spirit makes her an instrument of God’s grace. Let us raise our voices
in joyful proclamation of Mary’s canticle of praise and take these words
on our lips each evening, “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God my savior” (Luke 1:46-47).
