Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration held in the United States and also celebrated
in the Western African Diaspora in other nations of the Americas. The name
Kwanzaa derives from the Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza, meaning "first
fruits of the harvest." The celebration honors African heritage in AfricanAmerican culture, and is observed from December 26 to January 1, culminating
in a feast and gift-giving. Kwanzaa has seven core principles (Nguzo Saba). It
was created by Maulana Karenga, and was first celebrated in 1966–67.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT The readings at Mass
during Advent very often follow a pattern of the first reading
offering God’s promises to Israel in the Old Testament
which are now fulfilled with the birth of the Messiah. God is
faithful and keeps his promises. As we come to the celebration of Christmas, let’s really open our minds and hearts to God’s grace and
blessings. Christmas transcends the many divisions and conflicts in the
world, and offers our jaded and cynical society a vision of true peace and
justice, righteousness and freedom for all. I encourage you to take time at
home to read the Christmas story to your family, to your grandchildren, whoever shares your table. Talk about your memories of Christmas past, especially the religious traditions you remember. If we don’t make Christ the
center of our own Christmas, how can we expect unbelievers to do so? And
pray for the Church at this time. Pray for Pope Francis, Archbishop Carlson,
and all priests and deacons. Call to mind all those who have blessed you
this past year and throughout your lifetime. Share your blessings abundantly with others and reach out to anyone you know who is having a tough time
this Christmas due to poor health, reversals, trials and tribulations or the
loss of loved ones. Let Christmas flow out from you to bless the world and
all God’s creation.
CHRISTMAS MASS SCHEDULE There are three Masses for Christmas,
each with its own style and focus. On Christmas Eve there is a 4:30 PM
Mass with the focus on children. The Children’s choir will sing. This Mass is
often very crowded. If you can attend one of the other two Masses I encourage you to do so. Due to overcrowding, traffic flow and safety concerns we
will not be putting out extra chairs at this Mass. So if you don’t want to
stand, why not try one of the other two masses?
The second Christmas Mass is on Christmas Eve at 10:00 PM. This is a
“midnight Mass” without it being midnight. We will bless the crib and the
Sunday evening Mass choir will provide the music. It you like the stillness
and beauty of the midnight Mass this is for you. There will be plenty of room
at this Mass and I encourage all of you to give it a try this year.
The third Christmas Mass is on Christmas morning at 9:00 AM. The adult
choir will provide the music. This is a more traditional Mass at a time when
those without small children may wish to gather. I hope many of you without
children at home will find this time convenient.

A special THANK YOU to everyone who donated a gift to our Giving Tree, participated in setting up the trees, placing the ornaments, or helping pack the gifts for pick-up. We had a tremendous response this year by sending needy families in Washington
County over 575 gifts plus many extras. The volunteers at Christ

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Rejoice! The weeks of Advent waiting are over, and Christ is born!
We rejoice in our Savior’s birth—remembering the great gift of faith He has
given us through the mystery of His incarnation and the saving power of
His death and resurrection.
Each year, the people of our archdiocese have been asked to make a special gift on Christmas Day to support our seminarians at Kenrick-Glennon
Seminary. The men of our seminary, who have responded to Christ's call to follow Him,
are truly a gift to the Church and to the Archdiocese of St. Louis. It is these men who will
bring the faith given to us by Christ 2000 years ago to future generations here in the
Archdiocese of St. Louis.
I ask you, once again, to pray for vocations and for all our priests and seminarians. I also
ask you to be generous in your donation to the Christmas Day collection, which helps pay
the day-to-day expenses and maintenance of our seminary.
Please be assured of my prayers for you during the season of Christmas. May the Lord of
life come into your hearts and homes in a special way during this holy time of year.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT! The choirs of OLP will
be offering a CHRISTMAS CONCERT, in church
on Sunday, December 28, at 2:00 p.m. You are
invited, and so are your friends and relatives,
and all of the many travelers you may be hosting over Christmas. There is no charge, and tickets are not
required. The concert will consist of holiday favorites
sung by both our children and adult choirs, and accompanied on organ and piano, and there will be opportunity to
sing favorite Christmas carols. If you are interested,
please plan to attend and expect about an hour of good
cheer, melodies, and song.

This thirty minute documentary, featuring the
Archdiocese of St. Louis mission program Pan y Amor, will
open your eyes to the lives of children who have been rescued from living on the streets of Cochabamba and La Paz,
Bolivia. Prior to being rescued, these children barely survived and o en went to sleep hungry and on the streets.
Emmy award winner Chuck Neﬀ does an extraordinary job
of capturing the struggles of these innocent children and
their quest for a brighter future.
