SAINT PAUL’S EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH (302) 368-0064 701 S. College Avenue Order of Worship for the First Sunday Newark, DE 19713 after Christmas www.stpaulsnewarkde.org LESSONS AND CAROLS FOR CHRISTMAS Sunday, December 28, 2014 Heavenly angels spoke to earthly shepherds and eternity entered time in the child of Bethlehem. Sing to God a new song—a song of hope, joy, and peace around the world. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Welcome to our journey in Christ! W. Benson, then Bishop of Truro, drew up a Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, based on ancient sources, for use on Christmas Eve in the wooden shed which served as his cathedral. In 1918 this was adapted for use in the chapel of King’s College, Cambridge by its Dean, Eric Milner-White. There are traditionally nine lessons and carols; however, this morning we will hear seven, concluding with the Slaughter of the Holy Innocents, which is commemorated on December 28. The rest of today’s lessons are taken from those not read on Christmas morning, and the First and Second Sundays after Christmas since we will be celebrating the Epiphany of Our Lord next Sunday, January 4. 2 SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION In the principal service of Christian worship, the Holy Spirit gathers people around the means of grace—the saving Word of God and the sacraments. From the table of communion where Jesus Christ comes with forgiveness, life, and salvation, God sends us out to share the good news and to care for those in need. P Presiding Minister A Assisting Minister L Lector C Congregation GATHERING Worship begins with God who takes the initiative and calls us into being. We gather at the Holy Spirit’s invitation and assemble as the community of faith on the first day of the week, the day of Christ’s resurrection. Upon entering the sanctuary, the people pray silently or engage in quiet meditation allowing the music to focus their attention on God and God’s kingdom. The sanctuary doors will be closed as worship begins with the prelude. All hymns are in the back pages of this bulletin PRELUDE Please stand, as you are able. ENTRANCE CAROL Once in Royal David’s City ELW 269 LITANY FOR CHRISTMAS P C P C P C The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. Those who dwelt in the land of deep darkness, on them light has shined. We have beheld Christ’s glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father. To us a child is born, to us a Son is given. In the Word was life, and the life was the light of all people. A brief silence. 3 P God of all the ages, in the birth of Christ your boundless love for your people shattered the power of darkness. Be born in us with that same love and light, that our song may blend with all the choirs of heaven and earth to the glory of your holy name. C Amen. Be seated. WORD God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. FIRST LESSON L Isaiah 52:7-10 Heralds announce God’s salvation. 7 How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion, "Your God reigns." 8 Listen! Your sentinels lift up their voices, together they sing for joy; for in plain sight they see the return of the LORD to Zion. 9 Break forth together into singing, you ruins of Jerusalem; for the LORD has comforted his people, he has redeemed Jerusalem. 10 The LORD has bared his holy arm before the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God. L C This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. FIRST CAROL Hark! The Herald Angels Sing SECOND LESSON Isiah 61:10—62:3 4 ELW 270 L Clothed in garments of salvation. 10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. 11 For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations. 1 For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. 2 The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will give. 3 You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. L C This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SECOND CAROL Verses 1-2: Verses 3-4: THIRD LESSON L Lo, How A Rose E’er Blooming Sung in harmony Sung in unison Jeremiah 31:7-14 Joy at the gathering of God’s scattered flock. 7 For thus says the LORD: Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and raise shouts for the chief of the nations; proclaim, give praise, and say, "Save, O LORD, your people, 5 ELW 272 the remnant of Israel." See, I am going to bring them from the land of the north, and gather them from the farthest parts of the earth, among them the blind and the lame, those with child and those in labor, together; a great company, they shall return here. 9 With weeping they shall come, and with consolations I will lead them back, I will let them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble; for I have become a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn. 10 Hear the word of the LORD, O nations, and declare it in the coastlands far away; say, "He who scattered Israel will gather him, and will keep him as a shepherd a flock." 11 For the LORD has ransomed Jacob, and has redeemed him from hands too strong for him. 12 They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion, and they shall be radiant over the goodness of the LORD, over the grain, the wine, and the oil, and over the young of the flock and the herd; their life shall become like a watered garden, and they shall never languish again. 13 Then shall the young women rejoice in the dance, and the young men and the old shall be merry. I will turn their mourning into joy, I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow. 14 I will give the priests their fill of fatness, and my people shall be satisfied with my bounty, says the LORD. 8 L C This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THIRD CAROL Holy Child within the Manger 6 WOV 638 FOURTH LESSON L Galatians 4:4-7 Children and heirs of God. 4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. 6And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" 7So you are no longer a slave but a 7 child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. L C This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. FOURTH CAROL Let All Together Praise Our God Verse 2: Verse 3: Verse 4: Verse 5: FIFTH LESSON L ELW 287 Right (ambo) side Men and boys Women and girls Left (organ) side Ephesians 1:3-14 The will of God made known in Christ. 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. 5He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, 6to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. 7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace 8that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight 9he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, 10as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. 11In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, 12so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. 13In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; 14this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God's own people, to the praise of his glory. L C This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 8 FIFTH CAROL I Wonder As I Wander SIXTH LESSON Luke 2:22-40 L WOV 642 The presentation of the child. 22 When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord"), 24and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, "a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons." 9 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. 26It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Messiah. 27Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, 28Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, 29 "Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; 30for my eyes have seen your salvation, 31 which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel." 33 And the child's father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. 34Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, "This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed 35so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed — and a sword will pierce your own soul too." 36 There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37then as a widow to the age of eighty- four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. 38At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. 39 When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. 40The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him. L C This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SIXTH CAROL In a Lowly Manger Born Please stand. 10 ELW 718 SEVENTH LESSON L Matthew 2:13-23 The slaughter of innocent children. 13 Now after [the magi] had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him." 14Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt, 15and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, "Out of Egypt I have called my son." 16 When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he was infuriated, and he sent and killed all the children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had learned from the wise men. 17Then was fulfilled what had been spoken through the prophet Jeremiah: 18 "A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they are no more." 19 When Herod died, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, 20Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the child's life are dead. 21Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. 22But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And after being warned in a dream, he went away to the district of Galilee. 23There he made his home in a town called Nazareth, so that what had been spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled, "He will be called a Nazorean." L This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. LITANY OF PRAYER ON HOLY INNOCENTS P C Blessed are you, O LORD our God, for the saints. Especially this day we remember the innocent children killed in Bethlehem by the order of King Herod after Jesus’ birth. 11 P C P C P C P C P C Receive into the arms of your mercy all innocent victims and by your great might frustrate the designs of all who work with hatred in their hearts, or toward evil purposes. We remember before you peoples whose lands are torn apart by war, strife and suffering that the innocent might not be forgotten amidst the turmoil. We lift the turmoil within our own nation into your hands, Almighty God: Receive into the arms of your mercy all victims. We remember Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos, police officers killed in Brooklyn, and grieve their loss of life. We remember Eric Garner and Michael Brown and others, and grieve their loss of life. Receive into the arms of your mercy all victims. We pray for the protection of those whose duty it is to guard and protect us. We pray for those who feel afraid in their own communities, who feel profiled and undervalued in our common life. Make us instruments of your peace, O God, and lead us to deeper understanding of one another. We ask in Jesus’ name. Amen. SEVENTH CAROL Oh, Sleep Now Holy Baby Each verse will be sung in Spanish prior to the congregation singing the verses in English. 12 WOV 639 PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Our responses to praise and petition: A C Bless we the Lord. Thanks be to God. A C OR Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. THE PEACE P C The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The people greet one another with signs of reconciliation and peace, saying, Peace be with you. Be seated. At this time, please sign the Fellowship Pad (the black folder) found at the end of your pew and pass it to your neighbor. MEAL God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ. GATHERING OF GIFTS 13 In response to God’s love in Jesus Christ, we offer our gifts for service and mission. OFFERTORY CAROL Angels We Have Heard on High ELW 289 Please stand and sing Verse 3 as the gifts are presented and the table is set. PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING A C Good and loving God, we rejoice in the birth of Jesus, who came among the poor to bring the riches of your grace. As you have blessed us with your gifts, let them be blessing for others. With the trees of the field, with all earth and heaven, we shout for joy at the coming of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. GREAT THANSKGIVING P C P C P C P The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Blessing and honor and glory and power be unto you, Almighty God, eternal Lord, merciful Father! Long ago, you made us in your image; and though we shattered it, in your mercy you sent your Son to restore your image in us. Having suffered for us and died our death, he lives and reigns at your right hand. And so with the Church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join in their unending hymn: SANCTUS Holy, Holy, Lord Most Holy 14 EUCHARISTIC PRAYER AND THE LORD’S PRAYER P In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this in remembrance of me. Every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the saving death of the risen Lord until he comes. With thanksgiving, let us pray in the words our Savior Christ has taught us: C Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. 15 INVITATION TO COMMUNION P C The mystery hidden for the ages is revealed for us in this meal.
