SIGMA GAMMA RHO AND HIP HOP PIONEER MC LYTE TEAM UP
Partnering to #EducateOURMen
Cary, NC January 9 – Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is proud to announce an exciting new partnership
with rap pioneer Lana “MC Lyte” Moorer and Hip Hop Sisters Foundation (HHSF) as a founding member
and supporter of the #EducateOURMen movement. As part of the sorority’s Golden Alert, a social action
campaign to counter the injustices plaguing our communities, Sigma Gamma Rho will help increase
cultural education and social responsibility for #EducateOURMen. The main goal for this unique
partnership with MC Lyte, who is a member of Sigma Gamma Rho, is to develop programs for males by
providing scholarships and access to career and personal mentoring.
“Sigma Gamma Rho is positioned to further the sorority’s mission which is to enhance the quality of life
within the community. The partnership with Hip Hop Sisters is one of the sorority’s first initiatives which will
focus solely on men. We want to help bring awareness and possible solutions by promoting the importance
of supporting men as fathers and leaders in the community,” said Bonita M. Herring, 23rd International
President of Sigma Gamma Rho.
“#EducateOURMen is the signature education initiative of Hip Hop Sisters Foundation, which promotes
positive images of men of color. Together, with our founding partners, we are shifting the paradigm by
creating a new narrative that not only delivers positive images and messages about men of
color, but backs it up with direct support, ensuring they have access to higher education, mentorship and
tools for social responsibility. I am grateful to the women of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. for their
shared vision and support of the #EducateOURMen movement,” said MC Lyte, Founder and Chair of
HHSF.
