The Baptism of Jesus
Readings for Today
(New Revised Standard Version)
Collect
Holy and Gracious God, whose Beloved Son was baptized in the river Jordon:
Guide us as we seek to strive for justice and peace among all people, and to
respect the dignity of every human being; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who
lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen
A reading from the book of Genesis:
In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a
formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God
swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there
was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from
the darkness.
God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night.
And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
In response to the reader’s concluding lines, the People say:
Thanks be to God.

The Gospel
When the Gospel reading is in a communion service, in response to the reader’s introduction, the
People say:
(8am)
(11am)
Glory be to thee, O Lord
Glory to Christ our Saviour
John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of
repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean
countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were
baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and
he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, ‘The one who is more powerful
than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of
his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy
Spirit.’
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in
the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens
torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him.
And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well
pleased.’
When the Gospel reading is in a communion service, in response to the reader’s concluding lines,
the People say:
(8am) Thanks be to thee, O Lord, for this thy Glorious Gospel
(11am) Praise to Christ our Lord
Post Communion Prayer
Lord of all time and eternity, you opened the heavens and revealed yourself as
Father in the baptism of Jesus your beloved Son: by the power of your Spirit
complete the heavenly work of our rebirth through the waters of the new
creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
Source of the readings: Genesis 1.1-5; Mark 1.4-11

Sanctuary Repair to Begin 12 January
Beginning Mon 12th January the church sanctuary will be out of use for at
least a couple of weeks while a crew comes in to explore damage in the
chancel arch, and repair what needs to be repaired. Until they get up into
the damaged area, we are not completely sure how long the project will
take, but we know it is a minimum of two weeks.
We will have the 8am and 11am Sunday worship in the Hall on January 18
and 24, and then if work needs to continue, see if that’s working and make
plans beyond that. Tuesday service will continue as usual in the Vestry.
There will be no Thursday communion until repairs are complete.
We will also need assistance in clearing the church space and sealing the
organ, sometime after the baptism on Sunday the 11th. Please talk to Lisa
Eunson or Derek Whatling if you can help. Thank you for your
understanding and flexibility.
Plan for Next Two 11am Services in January
Sunday 18 January – No All Age Service or Matins –
We will have a Family Service in the Hall
For all ages together – no separate Sunday School
Sunday 25 January – Short Service of Communion Followed by AGM
Held in the Church Hall with Sunday School in the Rectory that day
