The Parish Council has had a survey carried out on the trees on The Green following one of the Lime Trees falling into the High Street some weeks ago. The result is that the rest of the trees appear to be in good health and only a small amount of remedial work needs to be carried out, mostly to remove dead wood. PARISH COUNCIL NEWS. Next Meeting of the Parish Council. The next meeting of the Parish Council will be on Wednesday 3rd December at 7.45 p.m. in the village hall side room. There will be an ‘open public forum’ at the start of the meeting for residents to address or ask questions of the council. Portable Football Goals. The Parish Council received a letter from some of the younger residents of the village requesting a set of portable football goals to be used in the Old Allotments Field. It was agreed that this was a very good idea and the Parish Council has applied to Aylesbury Vale Community Chest for a grant to pay part of the cost towards the purchase of a set of these goals. The Cheddington Residents Association has also agreed to make a contribution. It is therefore hoped that these goals will be purchased and delivered early in the new year. Neighbourhood Plan. The Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group is hoping to complete a draft of the PreSubmission Plan before the end of the year. The Neighbourhood Plan has to include a planning proposal that is cohesive and acceptable to Aylesbury Vale Planning Department as well as to the residents of Cheddington. The Steering Group has been advised to increase the number of houses to be included in the plan for Cheddington to "up to 100” and that these dwellings cannot be scattered in very small pockets over the parish. Small developments would also affect the amount of affordable housing that each development would deliver to the village. It is hoped that as many residents as possible attended the Public Meeting on the 23rd November and voted for the option that they considered to be the one that would be most beneficial to the future of the village. The results of the public meeting will be discussed at the next meeting of the Steering Group which, at the time of writing, will be Tuesday 9th December although this date has still to be confirmed. Whether you are an experienced motorist, older driver or just passed your test, here are a few tips on how to stay safe this winter: Only travel when absolutely necessary Allow more time for your journey Listen to local and national radio for travel and weather information Slow down and leave increased space between you and the vehicle in front. Registration of interest in affordable housing in Cheddington. You may be aware that our parish has a small scheme of affordable housing built for local people with a strong connection to the parish. Residents in housing need take priority over people on the district council’s general housing register. Recent changes to the Bucks Home Choice (BHC) register, maintained by the district council mean that people living in private rented accommodation or who have left the district because of lack of affordable housing will no longer be able to register with the local authority. The Parish Council are aware that many successful applicants on our affordable development fall into these two categories and in future we will be maintaining our own list of applicants who find they are unable to register with The next Residents’ Association committee meeting will be on Wednesday, January 14th at 8pm in the Methodist Hall. Please come along to give us your ideas how we can improve the village. 1 Be prepared when travelling. Keep the following in the car: Ice scraper, De-icer, Torch, Warm clothes, Blanket, Spade, Food & drink, High Visibility Jacket, First Aid Kit. Check: Your tyres are at the correct pressures. Your vehicle lights are clean and working. Your wiper blades are effective. Your battery is in good condition and fully charged. POLICE NEWS. Editorial from Inspector’s James Davies and Kelly Glister. We spoke a little about priorities last month and this is no less true as the nights draw in. You may have noticed it is getting darker earlier and it will only get worse. Of course this happens at the same time every year (stating the obvious)! What also happens at the same time every year is an increase in house burglary. When you come home from work, the shops, and so on, does your house look empty? Curtains open, lights off? If it does then you are at increased risk of being the victim of one of the more intrusive crimes there is. Something we often hear from the victims of burglaries that "it must have been a professional job; they knew when I was out". Actually this is a myth. Most burglars are opportunists and if they spot a house that looks empty they may knock first, get no answer and then they will go round the back and break in. We have channelled Police and AVDC resources into Operation Arctic over the next few months to target high risk areas. While we do this can we ask a favour? Purchase yourself a timer switch for a light, close your curtains and if someone knocks on your door with some spurious tale ("have you seen my dog" etc) then call us on 101 with their description - this may be the person who was going to break into your house. Your vehicle anti-freeze is the right concentration (your garage can do this for you). Your windows and mirrors are clear of ice or condensation. Grit Bins. The Grit bins are being filled in preparation for colder weather. Please remember that the grit in these bins is intended to allow drivers and pedestrians to treat localised icy conditions on roads and footpaths and it should not be used on private property including drives. Bucks Affordable Warmth Network. Does the thought of your next heating bill leave you cold? If it does, talk to the Affordable Warmth Helpline on 0800 107 0044 for free, impartial and expert advice on: Reducing your energy bills. A word from PC 7280 Phil Duthie. Now that the Heating your home affordably and efficiently. nights are drawing in the number of burglaries will rise. The team will need your help in preventing burglaries. This can be as simple as: Getting a timer switch for your lights which are available through Thames Valley Police. Making sure all windows and doors are closed. Ensure security lights are fitted and working correctly All valuables and car keys are not on show. Reporting anything that is suspicious. Unfortunately there was a burglary in Stewkley this month that resulted in two cars, jewellery and electrical goods being stolen. However due to an eagle eyed resident in Wingrave the two cars were recovered the following day. This goes to prove that by reporting something suspicious could result in the victim of crime getting some good news and having their property returned to them. Criminals will park stolen cars near to where they have been stolen for a few days to see if they are fitted with trackers. They will then return a few days later to collect them, so if there is a vehicle or person in your street that you do not recognise then call us. Grants and financial assistance. A free talk for your group. The ideal, recommended comfortable temperature for most people is 18 - 21C (65 - 70F). Anything above 24C (75F) is too hot and there's a risk of high fuel bills. 15C (60F) is a bit cool so you might need to turn your heating up. Anything below 13C (55F) and there's a risk to your health. The Buckinghamshire Affordable Warmth Network is a longstanding service working to reduce the number of people in fuel poverty; and so improving health & wellbeing. DON’T FORGET - please make sure you scoop the poop! Some dog owners are still not cleaning up after their dogs particularly in the Recreation Ground, the Old Allotments and the green area near the Village Hall. Please help the Parish Council eliminate this problem and the potential risk to health by keeping Cheddington free of dog mess by clearing up after your own animals. Thank you. The Parish Clerk, Margret Smith, can be contacted by email at parishcouncil@cheddington.org.uk. or by phone on 01296 326128. Next time you’re on-line, log onto www.cheddington.org.uk and take a look at the Council pages. What are the team up to? For the next few months both the rural and urban Aylesbury neighbourhood teams will be taking part in Operation Arctic. The subject on my mind this week as I write is the Great War of 1914-18. We have had such wonderful national and local remembrance services and occasions for those who gave their lives and fought for our freedom 100 years ago. It does not seem enough to give thanks and honour those who died. Many came home maimed and with damaged minds. We can only try to live well and uphold their values. Be proud of our nation. The number who lost their lives from a small village like ours was enormous when you consider the population size. It was a very rural village then and many of the inhabitants were involved in working on the land. We had fruit orchards all around – very labour intensive. The farmers would have had dairy herds, pigs and sheep to care for and the land would have been worked by heavy horses. Many of these also went to war. In the second world war women like my mum came out of the countryside, towns and cities to help run the farms. But one wonders how did the farming families and estates cope in the First World War? They must have been tough times. Unfortunately I missed the film on the battle of the Somme shown in the village at the weekend. But hearing about it brought something to mind. In the 1960’s when I was in Chelmsford training as a Veterinary Nurse I knew a wonderful old gentleman called George Balam. He used to work with the horses and he came to clean the brass and sharpen the cut throat razors at the veterinary practice. In those days we used to shave the animals with the razors prior to surgery. He was over 80 and I was 17. We got on so well and he used to tell me stories of his time fighting in the Boer War and at the Somme in 1914-18. George was a very smart and dapper gentleman. I was very young and his tales of taking razors off dead Germans was hard to take. He must have told me more but I wasn’t very receptive at the time. How I wish I had asked him about his young life and times at the end of the 19th century. Anyway we remained friends until his death and I was privileged to have known him. The local police have written online about the continuing problem with hare coursers. Hares are beautiful to see around the farm and should we ever have too many they should be culled humanely. I see on Facebook that people are complaining about the high numbers of magpies affecting our garden birds. I feel strongly that nature looks after itself and if we interfere imbalances of nature occur. Once again I have news on the milk front and I’m sad to say that a local farmer has had stock movement restricted again due to a Tuberculosis (TB) reactor in his herd. Looking on TB free England, 235701 cattle have been culled and rising....see www.tbfreeengland.co.uk. Dairy farmers will be seen on supermarket shop fronts in the coming weeks to try to persuade the consumer to buy British. Farmers for Action and DairyCo have published a Have Your Say Meetings. These are a great opportunity to come and meet us. These are drop in sessions, so you do not have to be available for the whole time, just pop along when you are free and have a chat. If you have any problems or concerns in your village, we will be happy to listen and will offer support and advice as necessary. Remember if you don’t tell us, then we probably don’t know about it. Disability hate crime is any crime or incident whereby the victim believes that they have been targeted because they have a disability (physical, sensory, learning disability or mental health). These incidents can include, but aren’t limited to, name-calling, verbal abuse, criminal damage to property and doing anything to make the victim feel unsafe. These incidents can be reported by friends, family, co-workers and carers as well as the victims themselves and witnesses. If you or someone you know is being mistreated or targeted because they have a disability, or you witness something like this in public, call Thames Valley Police on 101. We know hate crime can have an impact on victims which can sometimes reduce the victim to living in fear of the perpetrator. Because of this, or any other reason, victims and witnesses may feel unable to speak to the police. Contact us. Sun 7th Thurs 11th The Julian Group meets in the Methodist Chapel at 9.30 a.m. on the fourth Friday of every month. The Julian Meetings are half an hour of quiet prayer and a time for contemplation. The movement is worldwide and is named after Julian of Norwich, an English fourteenth century mystic. Meetings are non-denominational and everyone is welcome to join anytime. If you wish to know more, please phone Sarah Miles on 660427. Sun 14th Thurs 18th ST GILES PARISH CHURCH. Sun 21st It’s that time of year again, and we are looking forward to seeing you at one of our services this Christmas because - Jesus is the Reason for the Season! (Cheesy I know, and not original either). Who is Jesus to you? In John’s Gospel, Jesus is described as the Word, the “Logos”. Stoics talked about the “soul of the world” as being the logos. The ancient philosopher Aristotle used logos to refer to “reasoned discourse” or “the argument” in the field of rhetoric. Philo of Alexandria (a Jewish philosopher who lived around the same time as Jesus) used logos to explain how a God who is perfect, transcendent and ultimately beyond human knowledge and comprehension, could nonetheless have become known and revealed to the creation. In John’s Gospel, the Word is eternal, and the source of light and life, and the Word is Jesus Christ. Amazing. And – what is absolutely magical, and marvellous to me is – “the Word became flesh and he made his dwelling among us” (John 1:14). Christmas can be very special, but it can also be a sad time for some, who grieve for loved ones departed, or who are going through difficulty – broken relationships, illness, money problems, addiction... That’s why I think Christmas is a particular time for looking out for one another, sharing our lives as best we are able, and giving. Because when Jesus came to dwell amongst us, that’s what he did. When we celebrate the birth of Christ, the Logos, we are celebrating something cosmic, and a spiritual reality, in the midst of the mundane. It’s a profound celebration – God with us. Happy Christmas! We would firstly like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported our stall at the village fireworks. Apologies to those who couldn’t get burgers as we ran out this year. We were particularly amazed at the long queues for candyfloss – it was very popular. Remembrance Day was really well supported this year with 125 young people and leaders from the Scouts and Guides parading to St Giles and then up to the War Memorial for the laying of the wreaths. Absolutely fantastic turnout by everyone who were a credit to the village. We have received lots of feedback from everyone in the village on the brilliant turnout and behaviour of all the children involved and would also like to say a big thank you to Gill for a brilliant service and to Andy Walker for the music at the memorial. PRE-SCHOOL COMMITTEE NEWS. The Committee for 2014/15 has come together with 12 members now on board. We have been busy planning upcoming events for the festive period and beyond, and working on even more projects to support the Pre-School. Fundraising News. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who made it to our Halloween Party, which was an amazing success. Everybody we spoke to said that they had a fantastic time, so here’s to next year. With Christmas in mind we will be putting on the Christmas Nativity, with a chance for you to see your little one on stage dressed as a shepherd, an angel or even as a sheep. We will be selling programmes, and one person will win a wonderful prize in our Lucky Programme competition. We will be hosting our Chocolate Tombola again with tickets on sale, so please parents could you bring along a delightful chocolate donation to the Pre-School a few days before, it would be much appreciated. There will also be tea and coffee available in return for a small donation. Scout Christmas Post. As ever at this time of year, we will be delivering Christmas Cards again to raise much needed funds for the group. As with the last two years we are including Slapton, collecting from and delivering to all addresses in the village. You will be able to purchase our exclusive stamps at a cost of £1.20 for 10 from the Top Shop in Cheddington, the Carpenters Arms in Slapton and any of the cub leaders. Then put these stamps on your cards for your friends and neighbours (only from Cheddington or Slapton please) and post them in the special boxes which can be found at the Top Shop and the Methodist Chapel in Cheddington and at the Carpenters Arms in Slapton. The boxes will be available between 29th Nov and 19th Dec with the cards being delivered on Sunday 21st December. Thank you to everyone especially the local businesses for supporting this. Please help to promote Scouting for the young people of the village by buying a strip of stamps. CONTINUED ON PAGE 16 Term Dates Spring Term 2015: Wed 7th Jan – Fri 27th Mar.
