January Parish Calendar Painting Calling of the sons of Zebedee (James and John) by Marco Basaiti (c.1470-1530) Having just called on Peter and Andrew to follow him and be "fishers of men," Jesus similarly calls James and John, who instantly leave their father to become disciples. Zebedee, the father, is on the right in the red tunic. Peter is the man on the left in the characteristic square beard; Andrew, whose long beard is also a conventional characteristic, is in the green mantle on the other side of Christ. Zebedee was a Hebrew fisherman, the husband of Salome, and the father of James and John, two of the Apostles of Jesus. The call of the new apostles is a metaphor for the monastic vocation, a voluntary spiritual incarceration that is also a paradise of peace and contemplation. Three gospels pronounce this event (Mt 4:21-22, Mk 1:19-20, Lk 5:10). We will hear Marks’ Gospel on January 25th, the third Sunday of Ordinary Time. The broad landscape is hemmed in by walls and rocks. The many fishermen represent fishers of souls and other catches. This work divides all objects into distinct planes, and in frequent distortion (notice the boy in the foreground). These planes are triangular, and fit together in a decisive pattern, converging toward the central figure. It is supported by strong light - dark and color-contrasts. The men in the boats in the middle distance below, along with the far-off hills and walls above, join in the triangular arrangement. PERMANENT DIACONATE On Monday evening, January 26th, the Office of the Permanent Diaconate will be hosting an evening of recollection for all those who are considering a vocation to the diaconate for the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas. The program will be held at the Savior Pastoral Center chapel beginning at 6:30 p.m. For more information, email diaconate@archkck.org, call (913) 647 -0358, or visit VATICAN RADIO This past week, the Vatican Radio gave a report by the Fides agency about church workers killed while serving the Church in 2014. 17 priests 1 religious brother 6 religious women 1 seminarian 1 lay worker The majority –14 were killed in the Americas 4 priest, 1 seminarian in Mexico 2 priests murdered in US Robbery 1 Canada 5 priests, Seminarian in South America 18 church workers died of Ebola, 2 priests while serving the sick. Still unknown 3 Assumptionist priests in Congo since 2012 1 Syrian priest 2013 Indian Jesuit kidnapped on June 14 in Herat Afghanistan. The lambs in the upper left portion represent the flock that will soon gather, and the three archways represent the entrance into eternal life through the Trinity.
