Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.
As we begin the liturgical ‘season’ of ‘Ordinary Time’ (distinct
from the penitential or festive seasons of Advent, Christmas,
Lent and Easter), we hear from the Gospel of Mark in this year
‘B’ of the cycle of Sunday Scripture readings. But because it is
the shortest of the four ‘canonical’ Gospels, it occasionally is
supplemented to cover the Sundays of the year. Thus today we
hear of Jesus’ call of the first apostles from the Gospel of John,
against the backdrop of the Old Testament reading about the
call of the prophet Samuel. In both cases the call comes in very
direct and personal terms. Samuel, placed as a boy in the care
of the priest Eli, must learn to listen for the Lord’s voice and to
respond to it humbly: “Speak, for your servant is listening.” In
John’s account of the apostles’ call, it is John the Baptist who
plants the seed by directing two of his disciples to Jesus
(“Behold, the Lamb of God”). As He notices them ‘following’
Him out of curiosity, Jesus asks them to verbalize what they are
looking for, (“Rabbi, where are you staying?”), and then invites
them to accompany Him: “Come, and you will see.” As a result,
these two become intentional followers of Jesus. One of them,
Andrew, excitedly goes to his brother Simon to tell him “We
have found the Messiah”, and then brings him to Jesus, Who
looks deeply into Simon’s heart and invites him into a new identity - “You will be called Cephas (the rock, or ‘Peter’)”. This
account differs significantly from that of Mark, in which Jesus
suddenly appears at the shores of the Sea of Galilee and summons Peter and Andrew and James and John, fishermen who
drop their nets at once and follow Jesus. Both accounts offer
much to ponder about the call to discipleship: in today’s version
from John, the importance of a personal invitation from another
disciple is highlighted. Just as Jesus invited Andrew and his
companion to ‘come and see’, so they are impelled to share
what they have found in Jesus. So it has been down through
the ages: it is the faith and example of believers that intrigue
others to consider Jesus as perhaps the answer to what they
personally are “looking for”. Alive as the Body of Christ, it is our
privilege and responsibility, both as individuals and as a community, to be the kind of disciples that attract other seekers to
Jesus.
A signal achievement of St. John Paul II was his development
of what he termed ‘the theology of the body’, a way of looking
at our physical nature as the essential medium for our relating
to God and to one another. St. Paul’s words today proclaim our
bodies to be sacred. How we understand and accept both the
challenges and the responsibilities that go with our physical
identity is the focus of an exciting program we hope to pilot
soon with a group of middle schoolers and their parents, as a
foundation for ongoing growth, especially in appreciating the
gift that is our human sexuality. Watch for more information as

A DISTINCTION for ARCHBISHOP GERETY!
The Archdiocese of Newark is gratified to note that, with the recent
death of a 104-year-old French bishop, our Archbishop Emeritus,
Peter Leo Gerety, who hopes to celebrate his 103rd birthday in
June, is now the oldest Catholic bishop in the world! A Connecticut
native, Archbishop Gerety studied for the priesthood in Paris,
where he was ordained at Notre Dame Cathedral in 1939 to serve
the Archdiocese of Hartford. In 1966 he was named Coadjutor
Bishop of Portland, Maine, where he served until 1974, when he
was appointed the Third Archbishop of Newark, succeeding Archbishop Thomas A. Boland. During his tenure, Archbishop Gerety
initiated numerous programs to implement the decrees of the
Second Vatican Council and overhauled the administration and
finances of the Archdiocese. He retired in 1986, succeeded by
Archbishop (now Cardinal) Theodore E. McCarrick. Blessed with
extraordinarily good health, Archbishop Gerety has remained
active until very recently, present at many Archdiocesan events and
regularly administering the Sacrament of Confirmation. He
celebrated his 75th anniversary as a priest in 2014 and hopes, by
the grace of God, to observe his 50th anniversary as a bishop in
2016. He now resides at St. Joseph’s Home for the Elderly in
Totowa, NJ. Our prayers and good wishes, Archbishop Gerety!
POVERTY AWARENESS MONTH - JANUARY 2O15
Who lives in Poverty USA? All those who make less than the Federal government’s official poverty threshold… which for a family of
four is $23,850.00. People working at minimum wage, even holding down several jobs; seniors living on fixed incomes; wage earners suddenly out of work; millions of families everywhere from our
cities to rural communities.
Poverty does not strike all demographics equally. For example, in
2012, 13.6% of men lived in Poverty USA, but 16.3% of women.
Along the same lines, the poverty rate for married couples in 2012
was only 6.3% - but the poverty rate for single-parent families with
no wife present was up to 16.4%, while for single-parent families
with no husband present over 30%. And though poverty is often
perceived as a problem of urban environments and inner cities, the
poverty rate in metropolitan areas (14.5%) is actually lower than the
poverty rate in rural areas (17.7%). In 2012, the poverty rate for
people living with a disability was 28.4%. That’s 4.3 million people
living with a disability - in poverty.

2) Catholic Charities received $1,190 as a result of your clothing
donations from January 1 to November 30. These funds, combined
with monies from other participating parishes throughout the Archdiocese, alleviated the sufferings of the needy who sought relief through
the many operations of Catholic Charities. The shelters in Jersey City
and Newark provide food, accommodations and over-all care for the
homeless during these harsh winter months. Thank you for being our
partner and enabling us to bring Christ’s love to the most vulnerable.
