We celebrate the feast every year on November 9, and when the date occurs on a Sunday, the commemoration of this event in 324 AD displaces the ‘Ordinary Time’ liturgy, due to the feast’s significance. And what is that significance? The Basilica of St. John serves as ‘cathedral church’ of the Pope as Bishop of Rome: the Basilica of St. Peter, adjoining the residence of the Pope in Vatican City, the administrative ‘heart’ of the Catholic Church, is a more familiar structure, but the Basilica of St. John (called ‘Lateran’ because the property on which it was built by Emperor Constantine had belonged to the Laterani family) is considered to be the ‘mother and head’ of all churches in the Catholic world. We appropriately commemorate the dedication of this ancient church as a reminder of the unity that embraces the Catholic people through the universal ministry of the Bishop of Rome as Successor of St. Peter. Unlike St. Peter’s, which is architecturally and stylistically harmonious in Baroque splendor, the Lateran Basilica is more reflective physically of the Church’s passage through different periods of history and their changing styles. To me, this suggests something important about the nature of the Church, shaped by people’s experiences as it journeys through time, expressing its enduring mission in the varying ‘languages’ of people’s response to the challenges of discipleship. The prayers and readings of today’s liturgy also serve to focus every particular congregation on its identity as a ‘living temple’ reflected in the physical structure that houses the worshipping community. Ezekiel uses the image of the Temple in the Old Testament worship of God’s People in Jerusalem to recall the ‘place’ where the heavenly liturgy is celebrated, and the Temple is revered as the source of life-giving water transforming all it touches. In the Gospel, Jesus symbolically purges the Temple of His day from threats that give religious rituals a veneer of commercialism, underscoring the Temple’s primary purpose as “a house of prayer for all people.” Jesus refers to His own Body as the authentic ‘Temple’ in which God is encountered. St. Paul notes that those who comprise the Mystical Body of Christ are ‘built’ into a living temple in which “the Spirit of God dwells”. Our physical buildings reflect the spiritual reality of our interlocking lives, layered through succeeding generations of the faithful on the solid foundation of Christ Himself, and adorned with the witness of good and holy lives. Alive as the Body of Christ in the midst of our families and neighborhoods, our town, our places of work and recreation, and in the wider community of the world, may we seek to be faithful servants of His Gospel, calling all people to life in Him. God love you! - Msgr. Tim Shugrue The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK….. “For we are God’s fellow workers…” (1 Cor 3:9) We are called to help God build His kingdom on earth. We are His eyes, ears, hands and voice on Earth. By giving of our “first fruits” of our time, talent and treasure, we help fulfill God’s call. Are you doing all you can to help? Do you spend time in prayer every day? Do you participate in one of the many parish ministries.? Do you give generously in the offertory collection each week? AS FLU SEASON APPROACHES... While local pharmacies are offering flu shots in advance of the coming winter, and with the much-publicized concern about the spread of serious viruses, some parishioners have expressed anxiety about risks associated with hand-shaking, as in the opening introductions at Mass or at the Sign of Peace. In an effort to reduce this anxiety, we will place hand sanitizer on the tables flanking the doors at the church entries, for use as an extra precaution. And it is important to repeat that anyone who feels ill or “not quite right” or is coughing or sneezing, should refrain from partaking of the Precious Blood at Communion. Please do not interpret a fellow worshipper’s reluctance to shake hands as a personal affront: it may simply be a matter of a person’s feeling vulnerable. A friendly nod or smile can convey the proper attitude of mutual respect and affection. MEMORIAL DONATIONS We are accepting Memorial Donations for flowers for the Altar area, the Candles, Bread & Wine used for the Liturgies, and the weekly Sanctuary Candle. These items may be donated in memory of someone or to mark a special occasion. A donation of $10 is suggested for the candles, bread & wine and sanctuary candle, and a donation of $40 is suggested for the weekly flowers. (MEMORIAL CARDS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THESE DONATIONS.) ALSO, as we face the need to replace various items for liturgical use, we are happy to arrange for memorials of deceased loved ones. Contact the Parish Office.
