2ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Respect Life Events
This year marks the 42nd anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision that legalized abortion virtually on demand in the United
States. Thousands from the St. Louis Archdiocese are expected to attend the annual March for Life Thursday, January 22, in
Washington, D.C. Approximately 2,000 young people will go to the March for Life as part of the Office of Youth Ministry's
Generation Life pilgrimage January 21-25. A number of teens from our parish will be in attendance as well. The trip includes
special programming, including Mass with Archbishop Carlson. A live blog of events will be at blog.stlouisreview.com/genlifestl.
Also be sure to follow @genlifestl on Twitter and Instagram and on the Youth Ministry Office's Facebook page at
www.facebook.com/genlifestl.
The U.S. bishops have announced a "9 Days for Life" novena January 17-25 to encourage
nationwide solidarity in prayer for daily intentions, including for couples experiencing
infertility, those mourning the loss of a child through abortion, children in need of adoptive
homes, and for an end to abortion and use of the death penalty. Individuals can join by
mobile app, text message or email.
For those not able to make it to the march, the Respect Life Apostolate and Office of Young Adult Ministry will hold a Young
Adult Pro-Life Holy Hour and Rosary at 7 p.m. January 22 at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis. A gathering will be held
afterward in Boland Hall.
I am grateful for the efforts of our parish’s Pro-Life Committee. They do wonderful work to help keep us informed on life issues
and reminding us of our call to constantly pray. On Thursday, January 22 our parish will observe the National Day of Prayer for the
Protection of Unborn Children at the morning Masses.
The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
This coming week, we also observe a week of prayer for unity. Each year during this time, as Christians
deeply committed to Christian unity, we pray in a special way with Jesus who prayed “that they may be
one” (John 17:22).
The theme for this year’s observance is, “Jesus said to her, ‘Give me a drink’” All are invited to join in the
ecumenical prayer service for Christian Unity at St. Justin the Martyr Parish, 11910 Eddie and Park Road,
Sunset Hills, MO. Fr. Leobardo Almazan, OP, Prior of St. Dominic Priory will be the preacher.
May we always keep in mind that this parish exists to give glory to God in all we do and for each one of us to be sanctified in our
lives.
Have a great week! St. Francis of Assisi, pray for us.
Join us as we discuss chapter 3 of
"Four Signs of a
Dynamic Catholic".
There will be two opportunities for
discussion.

WELCOME TO ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI
From the pen of Fr. Sullivan……..
Did you know?
Next weekend I will be away, marching for life in Washington DC with hundreds of thousands from around the country. Since
Roe v. Wade, tens of millions of unborn children have been legally murdered in our country. To date, the estimate of legal
abortions is around 57 million. The population of the entire United States is 316 million. That means about 15% of our
overall population in the United States has been aborted. No genocide, no holocaust, no mass killing has ever come close to
that number in the recorded history of the world.
The most curious aspect of this pro-life vs. pro-abortion (pro-death) debate is the fact that pro-lifers are frequently labeled
as illogical, bible thumping, and irrational. However, we can argue against abortion without ever talking about our religion.
Here is the line of logic: The fertilized egg is human. (This is pure scienti ic fact—the zygote, the embryo, the fetus… at every
stage the baby in the womb is human. It simply cannot grow into anything other than a human being.) The fertilized egg is
alive. (Once again, pure scienti ic fact—the cells begin dividing/reproducing on their own, with a completely unique genetic
structure). If something is both alive and human, does that not make it a human life? Then the question is: “When is it ever
acceptable to take an innocent human life?” The answer is simple: never. So, you can prove that abortion is wrong without
ever appealing to religion.
I have never received a satisfying response to this line of logic from someone who is pro-abortion. If you happen to hear a
good response yourselves, please share it with me!
Who knew?
DynamicCatholic,Alive!–WhatisPrayer?
Prayer is, irst and foremost, a heartfelt
conversation and living relationship with God.
“Whether we realize it or not, prayer is the
encounter of God’s thirst with ours. God thirsts
that we may thirst for Him” (CCC, 256). Prayer is
the irst essential element of a serious spiritual
formation process. “There is no substitute for a
daily commitment to prayer” (Archbishop
Carlson). How does your prayer life stand right

White House Retreat for Men
February 2015
Come aside and rest… Mk 6:31 Peace, my gift to You.
The Lord invites us to spend time with Him but our busy
lives can get in the way. The Savior’s words of long ago
call out to us today. But there will always be one more
thing to do, another pressing need that will push Him out
of view. So ‘come with me and rest a while’, the
invitations there for everyone, even those with no time to
spare. It may seem like a sacrifice of time we can’t
afford, but not a moment is wasted when that time is
spent with the Lord. The Lord’s gift of peace is waiting
for you at the Jesuit White House Retreat just off
Christopher Road. The retreat experience is presented in
a format intended to deepen our spiritual outlook and to
help us to manage the stress and doubts of everyday life.
Here you can discover a new basis for a richer, fuller,
faith-centered tomorrow. Join the men of our Parish in
February 2015. Our retreat begins the evening of
Thursday, February 5th and ends after lunch on Sunday,
February 8th.

Pondering Life
Since we know that all genetic information needed for an
individual is already in place right at the moment of conception, that young human being, though extremely small and
vulnerable, only needs time to grow. Abortion is really age

Helpers of God’s Precious Infants
Helpers of God’s Precious Infants is an international
ministry committed to maintaining a loving and prayerful
presence outside of abortion mills where God’s children
are put to death. Helpers of God’s precious infants meet
on the 3rd Saturday of every month at the Cathedral
Basilica in St. Louis at 8:00 a.m. for Mass followed by a
Rosary procession to Planned Parenthood.
