Parish Registration
Our parish family warmly welcomes new
members. Please register at your earliest
convenience by stopping by the Parish
House during the office hours.
The Sacrament of Baptism
We welcome new life into the Church through
the sacramental sign of Baptism which is
celebrated every Sunday of the month at
1:00pm with the exception of Palm Sunday
and Easter Sunday. We encourage parents
who wish to have their child baptized to call
the Parish Secretary, Michele O’Toole, at
609-702-1848 ext. 301 or stop in and pick up
a Baptism packet.
Once the Baptismal Preparation class is
attended, the form completed and the
Godparent Eligibility Certificates are turned in
then a date for your child’s Baptism will be
set.
Baptismal Preparation
Catholic Godparents are required to
complete an Eligibility Certificate and have
the certificates signed by the pastor of the
parish where they are currently registered
and practicing their faith.
We offer a Baptismal Prep Class for parents
as a way of preparing them for their child’s
journey of faith. Classes are scheduled for
the first Wednesday of every month at
7:30pm. Please contact the Parish Secretary
to register.
The Sacrament of Marriage
Couples wishing to celebrate and consecrate
their love in the Sacrament of Marriage are
asked to call the Parish Secretary, Michele
O’Toole at 609-702-1848 ext. 301.
Arrangements are to be made with the
Pastor a year in advance of the requested
date. At least one person should be a
registered member of the parish. All couples
are required to attend preparation sessions.
Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick
Any Catholic who is seriously ill, advanced in
age, or who feels the need for the comforting
presence of the Church’s sacramental prayer
life may be anointed. Please contact the
Parish Office at 609-702-1848 ext. 301
during office hours. In the case of an
emergency, please call and follow the
instructions listed on our telephone message.
Funerals
In all cases, the family of the deceased
parishioner should contact the funeral home
directly. They will contact the Church to
make further arrangements. For information

FEDERAL DONOR RECORDKEEPING RULE
ON CHARITABLE DEDUCTION
The Pension Protection Act of 2006 included a
section relative to charitable deductions.
The rules require that people claiming charitable
deduction back up those deduction claims with
cancelled checks; records from banks or credit card
companies; or written notices from the charity or
not-for-profit institution. The burden is on the donor
to maintain or obtain the required records.
The parish will provide a record of contributions,
upon request, which will satisfy the IRS
requirements. Contributions of cash can only be
used as a deduction if church envelopes are used
enabling the parish to identify the donor. Please

Please keep our Bishop in your Prayers
Bishop David M. O'Connell, C.M., Diocese of
Trenton, underwent surgery, Dec. 29, in a
Trenton area hospital to remove his left foot,
ankle and part of his lower left leg reaching
halfway between the knee and the ankle. The
surgery was needed to address several serious
infections brought about by diabetes.
We ask members of the community to pray for
Bishop O’Connell in the coming weeks and
months, as he recovers and completes his
rehabilitation. Anyone wishing to send a card

The people to whom Jonah and Jesus address
their wake-up calls waste no time before
responding. Today’s readings have a sense of
urgency. The response of the Ninevites and of
the apostles involves first faith and then a
radical change in behavior. If inward change is
taking place in our lives; it will in some way
affect our outward behavior. “Lord, we pray
that our hearts may be alert to hear your voice
and accept the prompting of the Holy Spirit.”

Sacred Heart Cemetery
A final resting place
of peace and dignity
Purchasing your cemetery property now, before
your family actually needs it, offers you and your
loved ones the opportunity to make that important
and inevitable decision together. It is a kindness to
those people you love to have arrangements made
in advance.
Sacred Heart Cemetery is situated on a well
maintained parcel of land in Hainesport, NJ, on
Marne Highway (Rt 537) at the Mt Holly Bypass
(Rt. 541).
The cemetery is owned and operated by the
Church of the Sacred Heart of Mt Holly.
Persons buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery must be
Catholic or a relative of a Catholic. The cost of one
full grave is $800 and one cremation plot is $500,
which includes perpetual care. Terms are $50
down with monthly payments until paid in full.
Called by God
The importance of any calling depends upon
the position of the one who calls, and the
nature of the work to which the person is being
called. As with Peter and Paul and all the
Apostles, every priest is chosen by God
himself to continue the work of God’s divine
Son here on earth. “Come follow me, and I will
make you fishers of men.” Has anyone ever
been called by someone more important than
God, or to a task more vital than the one for
which the Son of God gave his life? All priests
who, in one way or another, have heard that
call, must ask themselves in amazement, “Why
me?” The need to respond to such a calling
with total and Christ-like surrender, and without
the slightest hesitation, is the reason why we
need to be praying constantly for all of our
priests. Their challenges and responsibilities
could not be greater!

The Giver Project

This winter's parish "read the book - see the
movie" is off to a good start and participating in
the The Giver Project will provide an
opportunity to read a profoundly compelling
story about values and how we discover their
power to change a life.
The 41st anniversary of the US Supreme Court
"Roe vs. Wade" decision on January 22 brings
to mind the importance of all pro-life issues and
readers will find the pro-life themes contained
in The Giver to be both remarkable and
insightful; this story about a future time and
place, revolves around the central character,
Jonas. Jonas' world is perfect. Everything is
under control. There is no war or fear or pain.
In fact, there are no choices. Every person is
assigned a role in the Community. When
Jonas is of the appropriate age he is singled
out to receive special training from the Giver.
The Giver alone holds the memories of true
pain and pleasure of life. Now, it's time for
Jonas to receive the truth for the betterment
and continuation of his society. Jonas will be
the new Giver. There can be no turning back.
As we progress in this frigid January, get your
copy of The Giver and begin your reading
experience. We will gather on Friday, March
27 at 7:30pm to watch the film version of The
Giver, featuring Oscar winning Jeff Bridges and
Meryl Streep. Afterwards, we will enjoy a
spirited discussion. So, get a cup of your
favorite hot beverage and begin reading , The
Giver. Read future bulletins for updates.
LENTEN LONGINGS
RETREAT 2015
Lent invites us to a time of prayer, reflection
and conversion. Make a six-week retreat led by
John Madden, parishioner and certified spiritual
director, by exploring the Sunday readings of Lent.
The theme of the retreat is For the Life of
the World. Participants are called to commit to
works of social justice and the ongoing conversion
of hearts as we entrust to God our lives and our
communities this Lent, praying that they might
become – through God’s grace – a gift freely given
“for the life of the world.”
We will have an administrative session on
Tuesday, February 17th to distribute materials. The
retreat will begin on Friday, February 20th (two days
after Ash Wednesday) and will run for five more
sessions: on Thursday, February 26th, Friday, March
6th, Thursday, March 12th, Friday, March 20th and
will close on Thursday, March 26th (before Palm
Sunday). Sessions run from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the
school library. There is a charge of $10 for the
materials which will be collected at the
administrative session.

This three hour mandatory workshop is for any
volunteers who anticipate working with children
in our parish’s programs. This includes:

programs, ministries such as altar servers,

ISN’TKNOWLEDGEAWONDERFULTHING!!
“What’salltheurgency?”
As soon as we hear a reading from the book of
Jonah most of us think of the story we heard as
children called, “Jonah and the Whale.” Today
we encounter that same Jonah. If you were to
read the two chapters in the book of Jonah
proceeding today’s reading you would discover
that God asked Jonah to go to the city of
Nineveh once before. Jonah chose not to
follow the “calling” presented to him. Perhaps
he didn’t see God’s request as relevant or
urgent at that time. Fast forward a bit and we
find Jonah out on a boat with others and the
sea was incredibly tumultuous. Jonah admits
to his co-journeyers in the boat that perhaps
the sea is tossing them about due to his failure
to follow God’s request to go to Nineveh to tell
the people to repent. The men in the boat do
their best to fight the sea by rowing harder to
save themselves and Jonah but to no avail.
The next scene we run into in this famous story
found in the second chapter of Jonah is when
the men in the boat decide that the seas will
not calm until they move Jonah out of the boat.
So they toss him into the water. Jonah finds
himself sinking into the darkness of the water
and lifts his mind to God for help. That is often
exactly how most human beings react to dark
moments in our lives. We may be less
attentive to where God is in our lives until
darkness or hard times hit, and then we reach
out to our dear Lord.
So we all know that Jonah does survive his
plunge into the deep hence the story of “Jonah
and the Whale,” which incidentally is a fish in
scripture – not a whale - and now in our
reading today we see the result of Jonah’s
attention to his mission – the second time the
Lord requests his commitment to the mission.
All of the city of Nineveh is converted from sin
as all of the people redirect their lives, inclusive
of the king. The prophet, once he embraced
his calling, was able to accomplish great things
in the name of God.
As we were baptized as Catholic Christians,
we were anointed as priest, prophet and king.
We, just like Jonah, are to be a prophetic voice
in this world as we proclaim Jesus Christ. We
are disciples and are given the mission to carry
God’s love into all of our everyday actions.
As followers of Jesus, our jobs can become
vocations, our volunteer schedules can
become discipleship opportunities, our times of
prayer, an offering for the rest of the world.
Each and every day we have moments where
we can create experiences of God’s love in the
lives of others, which will lead to beliefs that
indeed they are loved by God, which will begin
to move them towards actions that are even
more loving.
Jonah was asked to take on a mission.
Instead he chose to run the other way
temporarily. Disciples are often asked to take
on a mission. That may be an additional
responsibility in your job, caring for someone,
driving a person to church, inviting a person to
attend Mass with you, packing a bag, carrying
a canned good into church, spending time in
our prayer chapel or perhaps to volunteer in
one of our ministries. Many times we, like
Jonah, literally turn the other direction. Well,
my dear friends, we won’t throw you out of the
boat, but we will encourage you to keep your
eyes, ears, mind and heart open. All of us
during our lives are invited to be that prophetic
voice. Ideally, we hear Our Lord’s invitation
the first time and respond.
Perhaps with prayer we can be a little more
like Simon and Andrew, James and John
whom we meet in today’s Gospel. When
Jesus invited them to follow Him, they left their
fishing nets behind and followed Him. They
responded with an urgency – perhaps they
knew the gift of discipleship – the love that
awaited them Do we?
