MNRF crews are beginning their 5th consecutive year of Operation Bait Bucket next week. This program is a joint initiative with OFAH that sees Aurora District MNRF staff travel across the lake to discuss ways anglers can reduce their chances at spreading
Invasive Species and disease like VHS. The primary message will be for anglers to make sure they do not dump their live baitfish into the lake or on the ice when they are done … and to either save and re-use or dispose of bait properly on shore. We have
heard that angler success has varied this past week across the lake. The warm front and rain last Sunday did not really affect the thickness of the ice, but it seemed to slow the action down in some places. By end of week however, and cooler temps, the bite
was on again in most places. Some BIG lake trout have been caughht so far this season, whitefish have cooperated for some and yellow perch fishiing has been very good in some areas and not so much in others. This is the first year since 2002 that the
cisco (lake herring) fishery has been open and anglers can now harvest 2 cisco with a Sport Licence and 1 with a Conservation, if they so choose. Many of the lake trout, whitefish and even shallower yellow perch anglers are finding cisco as well.
