Bulletin - Saint Francis of Assisi Parish

St. Francis of Assisi Parish
February 1, 2015 • Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
......................................................................................
From the Pastor’s Desk
T
he next few weeks, it seems, are going to be a me
for reflec on and retreat.
Once a quarter, each friary is expected to gather the
brothers together for a fraternal Day of Recollec on. This
coming Monday, our friary, here at St. Francis, will gather at
Mercy Center in Auburn to spend some
quiet me together, some me for
prayer and reflec on on the needs of our
Province—in par cular, on our common
life and balancing that with our ministries. Our life as friars is intended to be
“fraternity in mission.” Fraternal life is
primary, and our mission as friars follows
from that. The perennial difficulty is
that of trying to keep our mission—or
work, from taking precedence over our
fraternal life lived with a spirit of prayer
and devo on.
Work cannot take precedence over
family. Work is necessary to support the
family, but family should not suffer on
account of work. Work is a means to an
end—not the end in itself. To keep this
balance is not an easy task. Our Provincial Chapter, scheduled
for the first week of January 2016, will address this tension
in our lives as friars. It is hard to tell what will come of this
discussion, but to have vital fraterni es and fulfilled friars,
we must do whatever is necessary to bring these two values
into balance. This is also so true for families. So, as the friars
pray and reflect on this issue in our lives here in Sacramento,
I might suggest that your families also spend some me this
week reflec ng on the level of balance in your own families.
Following the friars’ me away on Monday, the parish
staff will have its annual three days of retreat me together.
This year, the staff will be spending next Tuesday through
Thursday at Mercy Center in Burlingame to relax, pray, reflect
on our lives and ministries at St. Francis and just be with one
another and enjoy one another’s company and spirit. The
staff looks forward to this every year, and I am sure we will
return relaxed and ready for Lent.
Weekend Masses
Saturday Vigil 5:15 pm
Sunday 7:30 am, 9:30 am, Noon
Weekday Masses
(in St. Clare Chapel)
12:10 pm
Next Saturday, the parish staff and the Parish Council will
gather for its annual day of retreat and reflec on in Brunsman
Hall. Bro. Ryan Thornton, OFM will lead a reflec on on what
makes our parish a Franciscan versus a diocesan or Jesuit or
Dominican parish. Bro. Ryan is currently a transi onal deacon
serving as Sts. Simon and Jude Parish in Hun ngton Beach, CA.
He is one of our bright young friars who give our
province a future full of hope. Bro. Ryan will be ordained a priest within this year. He will be assis ng
and preaching at all the Masses next Sunday—with the
excep on of the 9:30 am Mass, as Bishop Soto will be
dedica ng our new altar and ambo at that Mass.
The Parish as a whole will have its opportunity
for retreat at our annual Lenten Retreat, on February
23-25. The retreat presenter will be Sr. Mary Beth
Ingham, OSJ. Sr. Mary Beth is a scholar in Blessed
John Duns Scotus, the medieval Franciscan philosopher and theologian. Sr. Mary Beth is a wonderful
scholar and teacher at the Franciscan School of
Theology at Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside, CA.
She is also very down-to-earth in style.
Many parishioners have expressed the desire for
a deeper understanding of the Franciscan imagina on
and its applica on and presence in our minds and hearts, so
Sr. Mary Beth is providing us a retreat on a Franciscan topic,
“A Spring me of Franciscan Gi edness.” I urge you to take
this opportunity for me away from your busy lives to gather
with others and go deeper into our Lenten journey. You won’t
find a be er guide than Sr. Mary Beth!
Lent is a me of repentance. As I men oned in my homily last Sunday, we might seek to repent during this coming
Lent of being “boxed and ed up” in our understanding of
ourselves, others and God. May we be free of this containment and experience a deeper awareness of our gi edness as
God’s beloved sons and daughters.
There is a lot of me for reflec on coming our way. Let’s
take advantage of this me to gain a deeper understanding of
who we are and how we are living as disciples of Jesus.

Illness and the Liturgy
Thank You!
Illness and the Liturgy
Dear St. Francis of Assisi Parishioners,
O
ur tradi on of prayer involves close contact with each
other. By gathering together, singing, praying, sharing a
pew, exchanging the sign of peace and receiving communion
we respond to God’s call to worship as members of Christ’s
body and to be nourished by Word and Sacrament. However,
if you are ill, it is a sign of charity for your brothers and sisters
to keep that illness from spreading to others.
W
e are truly blessed here at St. Francis
of Assisi Elementary School to learn,
pray and grow in this special, Franciscan environment. Our blessings would not be possible without
the generous support of you, the members of the
St. Francis Parish. As you support our school, you help
strengthen, foster and invest in the future of all of our
students and the overall well being of the Church.
To help us to protect and care for our brothers and
sisters, we are asked to:
Last week we celebrated Na onal Catholic Schools Week.
We want to thank you for all that you have done and connue to do to help our school. We are truly grateful for your
prayers, contribu ons and dona ons. We also appreciate the
gi of your me and talents that you so graciously share with
us. We also hope that you had a wonderful me on Sunday
whether you joined us for pancakes and bacon or just walked
the halls.
• Pray the Lord’s Prayer with our hands
joined instead of holding hands.
• Exchange a sign of peace that does not
involve touching others.
(it helps to smile!)
• Receive Holy Communion in the form of
bread only (un l flu season has passed).
To add to what Fr. Ken said last weekend in his homily,
together, Parish and School, we are a strong and vibrant
community. We hope that you will con nue to join us in our
endeavors and in our never-ending celebra on of Franciscan,
Catholic educa on. From all of us… Thank you!

Gratefully,
I
n today's Gospel, we hear this: "...on
the Sabbath...in their synagogue was a
man with an unclean spirit." Theologian
Bruce Epperly writes:
St. Francis of Assisi Elementary School Students & Staff
“The reading from the Gospel of
Mark (1:21-28) sees Jesus' authority as
joining words and ac on. Jesus walked the talk, and spoke
words that transformed people's lives and reflected God's vision for humankind. In today's reading, Jesus' sermon leads to
ac on. He confronts a man, possessed by a destruc ve spirit.
While we don't know the nature of this spirit, it destroyed his
personality, rendered him an outcast, unclean, and unable to
live with his family. Jesus confronts this unclean spirit with the
simple words: ‘Be s ll. Come out from him.’
