Feed My Starving Children
A Feed My Starving Children MobilePack took place on
Tuesday night, July 13 and throughout the day on
Wednesday, July 14. Over 500 volunteers helped surpass our goal of 100,000
meals
by
packaging
106,920 meals.

As of this date donations
continue to come in but as of July 16, 2010, $20,821.75
has been raised and any incoming donations will be
seed money for a 2011 MobilePack event. The goal is
that we host a future event with other area churches
and/or businesses.

Brian and Kate Blazer
Brian and Kate first became aware of the
North Site by the close proximity to their
home. Kate is originally from Portland, OR.
She enjoys volunteering, coaching and working out plus spending time with family and
friends. Brian is an instructor at FVTC and is a
nationally ranked Masters Level as an amateur
strongman.
Lisa Koehler
Lisa Koehler is a 2002 graduate of Appleton
North High School and 2006 graduate of UW
Stevens Point. She was born in Appleton
and currently is a realtor with Century 21
Acre Realty. Lisa likes to rotate between the
North Site and Downtown Site for worship.

Shelly Koeck, Denton Mueller; Ally Mueller
and Tanner Koeck
Camping is the activity of choice for Shelly,
Denton, Ally and Tanner. Shelly is employed
at Presto Products and Denton enjoys his carpenter occupation. Shelly and Denton will be
getting married at the Downtown Site on
August 5, 2010. Ally is already attending FELC
confirmation classes and loves to text and
shop while Tanner enjoys his Legos, as all
8 year olds do.
Darrel Ruechel
Darrel enjoys working outdoors; especially walking and
working in the woods. In fact he is a long time volunteer
on the Ice Age Trail. Darrel resided in Waupaca until his
June 26 wedding to JoAnn Krueger at the North Site, he
then moved to Appleton. Congratulations, Darrel and
JoAnn. Darrel is enjoying retirement and will probably
be worshiping between both sites.
Jim and Jodi March, Reilly and Spencer
The March family recently moved from Minnesota and indeed are die hard Viking fans.
Jim is the Town Administrator for the Town
of Grand Chute and Jodi has been teaching
in the Hortonville Area School District.
Reilly just finished sixth grade at Houdini
Elementary and loves playing the flute and
Spencer enjoys soccer and the outdoors. He
will be going into the third grade at Houdini.

Steve and Shelley Jandt
Steve is a Peshtigo native and
Shelley is originally from the Mishicot area. Steve currently is the operations director of the Salvation
Army in Green Bay and Shelley
works at the WVH-KING doing music therapy for the geriatric clients.
Steve is an avid sports fan and Shelley enjoys music, reading, volleyball, traveling and spending time
with family and friends.
Nancy Jandt
Nancy is a retired teacher from the
Marinette Area School District. She
has recently moved to Kimberly to
be closer to her son and daughterin-law. Nancy was very involved in
her previous congregation, First
Trinity Lutheran. In the small world
department, Nancy ended up having ties with Jean Monson. She
roomed with Jean’s aunt in college
plus her husband and Jean’s father
played baseball together for years.

From the Desk of Pastor Mary
Dear Friends in Christ,
I want to thank all of you for the exciting summer that we have had here at
First English. From the church picnic
to the choir at the Timber Rattler’s
game; and from the interns helping
with the lunch program over at Zion,
to the wonderful Wednesday night
reFUEL service; and finally from the
great “Harvest” concert that led to the
unbelievable outpouring of resources
for Feed My Starving Children – we have seen the body of
Christ doing the work of Christ this summer. Thank you!
With everything that is going on, it might be easy to forget that we are in the midst of a call process. The call
committee has been hard at work, not only to find a new
senior pastor, but also to ensure that person’s success.
Part of that work has been the reconciliation survey that
many of you filled out which culminated in the document,
“What Happened and Where are We Going?”
Our final step in response to that survey has been to set
up a “Rededication Service” for Sunday, August 29. The
purpose for the evening is to provide an opportunity for
the FELC family to rededicate themselves to the mission
of our church. From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. we will have breakout groups, followed by a 6:30 p.m. worship service and a
pie social afterwards.
One group will discuss how we can
best support our new pastor. Another will discuss the discipleship
model. We also want input on reviewing our “Guide to Discipleship”
handout so that it closely follows
the beliefs and practices of our congregation. The reason that this is
part of a “Rededication” service is
that misunderstandings about the
meaning of discipleship have led to questions concerning what leadership is doing in the congregation. Finally, there will be quiet time in the Sanctuary for people to write down all past resentments that they carry
concerning the church. Our commitment will be to
leave those emotions behind and rededicate to the mission of the church.
What a fitting end to an exciting summer! Join us as we
prepare our hearts to welcome a new pastor, but more
importantly, to prepare for the Spirit’s continuing work
in our midst.

Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote
Peace . . . One School at a Time by Greg Mortenson
and David Oliver Relin
In Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote
Peace . . . One School at a Time , Greg Mortenson, and
journalist David Oliver Relin, recount the journey that
led Mortenson from a failed 1993 attempt to climb Pakistan’s K2, the world’s second highest mountain, to successfully establish schools in some of the most remote
regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan. By replacing guns
with pencils, rhetoric with reading, Mortenson combines
his unique background with his intimate knowledge of
the third-world to promote peace with books, not
bombs, and successfully bring education and hope to
remote communities in central Asia. Three Cups of Tea
is at once an unforgettable adventure and the inspiring
true story of how one man really is changing the world one school at a time.
Book Review: Letters from the
Land of Cancer
Walter Wangerin has
been living with cancer
since January 2006. An
award-winning writer,
his fans number in the
millions. So it is not
surprising
that
he
chose to write about his
battle with this disease.
He has suffered tremendously through the different
therapies, treatments and set-backs, and chronicled it
all to family and close friends with letters describing
his journey. These letters comprise the book, Letters
from the Land of Cancer.
Following a sermon he preached, he tells: ”I raised my
right hand to signal the strength of my trust, and stuck
my left thumb into my mouth and sucked. Then, still in
that silence, I returned to my seat again, and an ocean
of comfort rushed in to lift me up. For the people
crowding the Chapel behind me, all those aware of my
presence and willing to join me down the Jesus-roadthese enveloped me, a vast congregation around my
soul.”
Have some tissue handy when you read this book, for it
will touch you in the very place where your heart and
faith come together.
SEPTEMBER SELECTION
Stones into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books,
Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan
by Greg Mortenson
Just as Three Cups of Tea began with a promise - to
build a school in Korphe, Pakistan - so too does Mortenson’s new book. In 1999, Kirghiz horsemen from Afghanistan’s Wakhan Corridor rode into Pakistan and secured a promise from Mortenson to construct a school
in an isolated pocket of the Pamir Mountains known as
Bozai Gumbad. Mortenson could not build that school
before constructing many others, and that is the story
he tells in this dramatic new book. Picking up where
Three Cups of Tea left off in late 2003, Stones into
Schools traces the CIA’s efforts to work in a whole new
country, the secluded northeast corner of Afghanistan.
Mortenson describes how he and his intrepid manager,
Sarfraz Khan, barnstormed around Badakhshan Province
and the Wakhan Corridor, moving for weeks without
sleep, to establish the first schools there.

come on Sunday, August 8 and 15 between 9:15 and
10:30 a.m. in the Lounge at the Downtown Site to identify your classmates on the FELC Confirmation photo
collection.

Teachers Needed for Fall
Learning Times
NEEDS: 25 more teachers are needed, so please volunteer today. At the Downtown Site team teachers are
needed for a 4 year olds class, grades 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 and
high school. At the North Site, team teachers are
needed for pre-K, grades 3, 4, 5, 6 and middle school in
addition to Wednesday confirmation shepherds. This year
parents are asked to take a turn
as a classroom “Pal” to help occasionally with special needs or
projects. Call Donna Haberland or Anita Damon in the
church office. They’ll help you explore ways to serve.
PRAYERS: The entire congregation is asked to pray for
God’s guidance and direction that volunteers will feel a
call to step forward to teach classes this fall. Approximately one hundred volunteers teach or assist with confirmation classes, Sunday School, Wednesday KidsLife
and Adult Learning. How can you help meet this need?
Everyone can find a role as teachers, team teachers, parent helpers, supply organizers, room decorators, substitutes or office support. There are ways you can help
weekly, every other week or monthly with the age-level
you prefer. Teachers receive complete lesson plans with
step by step directions to teach. Please prayerfully consider walking alongside students as they learn and explore their faith.
Sunday School Teacher Meeting
The excitement for fall begins as teachers pick up lesson
plans and student lists at the August teacher meeting.
Child care is available with advance RSVP to the church

All parents with students in preschool to grade 6 are
asked to attend an orientation to Spark Sunday School,
kids’ choirs and Wednesday KidsLife. Please plan to attend one of these dates:

North Site (during VBS week)
• Tuesday, August 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall
at the Downtown Site (child care available with advance RSVP to church office)

Third Grade Bible Class
All third grade children are given a Bible as a gift from
First English Lutheran Church. The Bible is to be
brought to Sunday school each week. In preparation, third
grade children and their parents should attend Using My
Bible Class on Wednesday, August 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the
Fellowship Hall at the Downtown Site. On Rally Sunday,
September 12, parents and child will come forward together to the altar as we pray for God’s blessing on this
faith milestone.
Fall Learning Time Registration
Learning Time, for children and adults begins Sunday,
September 12. It's easy for children to be involved in
both music and Sunday School each week. At the Downtown Site, Linda Hash directs the Cherub Choir for kids
in kindergarten to grade 2, and Sue Bakken directs the
Angelus Choir for kids in
grades 3 - 6. At the North
Site, Denise Klemp directs
the Joy Choir for pre-K to
kindergarten kids and the
Hosanna Choir for kids in
grades 1 - 4. Choir is for all
kids who like to sing and
praise God through song,
no experience needed.

Bethel Bible Study
A Bethel Bible waiting list is on the
bulletin board in the Gathering
Area. Either a day or evening new
Bethel Bible class rotation will be
started when there are at least
twelve participants. Bethel, a twoyear overview of the Old and New
Testaments, uses an historical approach to the Hebrew-Christian
heritage of faith. Both adults and
high school students are welcome
to the class. Recent graduates enthusiastically endorse the value of
participating in this two year study
of the entire Bible. To learn more

Summer 2010 Bible Study
“Pray Always,” a women’s study from the Lutheran Woman
Today magazine, meets from 9-10:15 a.m. monthly on
Monday August 16 in the Gathering Area at the North Site.
RSVP for child care in the church office. The August study
looks at the power of prayer to change us. Copies of the
study are on the bulletin board in the Gathering Area.

Lay School of Ministry
Begins in September
Looking for monthly weekend, in-depth, exam-free religious study? Registration is open for the Lay School of
Ministry of the East Central Synod of Wisconsin for the
2010/11 school year (September - May).
Participants
meet once each month on Friday evening and Saturday
morning for two years. Seminary professors, pastors and
lay leaders lend their expertise to foundational studies
in Biblical Theology, Church History, Systematic Theology, Worship and Spiritual Formation. Tuition is $400
and books cost $150. This is an excellent opportunity for
theological learning and skill enhancement for service
as congregational or community care givers, educators,
and worship leaders. For more information, contact Anita
Damon in the church office, or talk to the 2009 Lay School
graduates Betty Smith and Yvette Woerishofer.
Upcoming Wedding Sessions
“Getting Married, Getting Started ” Wedding
Workshop
On Saturday, September 18 a
“Getting
Married,
Getting
Started” session will be held
for couples who have scheduled a 2010 or 2011 wedding at
First English for either location. This session will be held
from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in
Fellowship Hall at the Downtown Site. This workshop will
be geared towards helping couples plan their ceremony, music and bulletins, hear about
First English guidelines and
learn about the wedding coordinator ministry. Refreshments
will be provided. Please remember to RSVP to Jean
Monson in the church office by September 13, 2010.
“Building a Successful Christian Marriage”
is conducted by Wes Johnson, a licensed professional
Christian counselor, who assists couples in preparing
for their life together, getting through difficult times and
enriching their relationship. Wes has a passion for working with couples to direct them toward the type of marriage that God has designed for them. The next workshop for couples getting married in 2010 or 2011 is Saturday, November 6 at the North Site in the Gathering
Area. This is a group workshop. RSVP to Jean Monson in
the church office by Nov. 1, 2010.

New Fall Learning Opportunities
Love and Respect Series
“Love and Respect” is a
new series for married,
engaged or committed
couples with a simple
message. “A wife has
one driving need – to
feel loved. When that is
met, she is happy. A
husband has one driving need – to feel respected.
When that
need is met, he is
happy. When either of
these needs isn’t met,
things get crazy. Love and Respect reveals why spouses
react negatively to each other, and how they can deal
with such conflict quickly, easily and biblically. At each
“Love and Respect” gathering, you’ll watch a DVD together and share discussion. Chris and Jen Kennedy are
the facilitators.

When: Wednesday evenings September 15 to December 15,
6:30-8:30 p.m.
Who: All married, engaged or committed couples.

Women’s Retreat
The Women of the ELCA - East Central Synod Fall Retreat is September 17 and 18, 2010 at Crossways-Imago
Dei Village, Clintonville. The “Love as God Loves” retreat
includes Bible Study, Stretch ‘N Pray with Sharon Fox
Bogan, music, free time for yourself and a campfire. The
cost for the retreat including 3 meals and lodging is $68. A
one day option is available. Registration forms are on the
bulletin board, or contact Anita Damon for more information. Advance registration is required by August 30.
Holy Communion Class
Parents and children ages 8 and older
are invited to a 2 - session workshop on
Holy Communion from 6:30-7:45 p.m. on
October 6 and 13 in the Fellowship
Hall at the Downtown Site. Participants learn how the common elements of bread and wine are used in
the sacrament and review “table manners” for receiving
this gift of grace. The next class will be held in the
spring. Please RSVP the names of parents and children

What: Martin Luther’s Smalcald Articles
A six week Sunday series October 3 to November 7
When: 9:15–10:15 a.m. at the Downtown Site
The Smalcald Articles, written by Martin Luther, are a
testimony of Luther’s personal faith written at a time
when he felt his death was near. They were intended to
outline what Protestant churches could and could not
compromise as they sought reconciliation with the
Catholic Church. The Smalcald Articles thus help us
understand what makes us unique as Lutherans. Peter
Peregrine leads a discussion of their historical context
and meaning for us today.
Confronting Death, A Christian
Approach to the End of Life
Every living thing in the universe dies. “Good-bye” time
comes. It always does. I wonder; “What will happen to ME
when my body dies?” “What will happen when tomorrow
starts without me?” Even though it is always painful, we in
the Christian tradition have beliefs, practices and rituals
that can be helpful to us, and those we love, when our
time to say “Good-bye” comes. Coming from his own experiences of living with life-threatening cancer, Walter
Wangerin speaks directly from the heart in this DVD series.
He speaks about how cancer has changed his life and how
his faith has sustained and prepared him to meet death
itself. The DVD series explores:
• Discovering serious illness
• Grieving before death
• Caring for the one who is not sick
• How do we handle the pain
• Confronting the dying itself
The series shares one person’s way of dealing with the end
of life. Be assured, there is no one right way to deal with
these life and death issues. Just as Wangerin has his own
story to tell, we all have our story to tell.
This fall, Nolan Gnewuch, retired hospital and hospice
chaplain, facilitates the 5 week series from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
on Monday October 18 to November 15 in the Lounge at
the Downtown Site. Please register for the series and
RSVP in advance for child care by calling the church office.
There will be a minimal charge for child care.
Two Homes, No Battles
This workshop suggests successful co-parenting skills
for divorced or separated couples. Discover practical
ideas and skills to create a more nurturing environment.
Learn what parents can do to make the transition less
traumatic. The program is sponsored by Family Services
of Northeast Wisconsin and is open to the community.

7th Grade Retreat
Incoming 7th Grade Retreat is Friday, August 27 through
Saturday, August 28 and it is very important for all students and guides to attend this one night retreat. We
will spend time talking about what confirmation is and
is not, play tons of games, explore the community,
watch movies, and get to know each other. Please make
sure to have an up to date release form on file (found at
www.felc.com) and sign up. The cost of this retreat is
included in your 2010/11 confirmation fees.

There is a need for confirmation small group guides in
the 7th grade for the 2010/11 school year. A complete

for a couple or for someone looking for a special niche
to fill in ministry for young people. A great network of

Summer Intern Ministry
Thank You Interns!
A huge thank you to our FELC Summer Interns
and their ministry this summer! August 11 marks
their final day of ministry with FELC and is our
last intern-led reFUEL worship of the year. If you
have not made it out to one of these worship services, please come out on these final two
Wednesdays in August to worship with us. On
August 4 we will have an Intern Appreciation Social
following worship. This will be at the North Site
starting at 7:30 p.m. and include an Ice Cream Social and sharing of ministry highlights from the
summer. Please come out and show your support
for these young adults and their ministry.
Did you know that the summer interns have ministered to an average of 65 people per Wednesday night at reFUEL worship? On average 25 kids
preschool through grade 4 are ministered to and
fed a meal three days a week by our summer interns? Did you know that the summer interns
raised over $800 (after expenses) in a special
benefit concert for Feed My Starving Children
with over one hundred people in attendance?
What about the six different small group ministries that our interns led throughout the summer
ranging from Bible study to youth groups, including a new adult art class which was very well received? Did you know that each intern puts in up
to four hours a week of personal outreach to the
community including working at Echoes, the
Appleton Police Department and networking
ecumenically with other churches on behalf of
First English? And that the interns took 60 youth
to Noah's Ark including 20 youth from outside
the congregation?
The interns also spend time in their own small
group building and strengthening bonds with each
other and their faith. Our intern ministry is a valuable ministry of this church and provides a unique
ministry for young adults in the church. Make sure
to not miss our Intern Appreciation Social on August 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the North Site.

Harvest: A benefit for Feed My
Starving Children
was held July 10 at Harmony Cafe and featured local
musicians American Fiction, Castle, Equinox, and
Ruthie Kovanen. American Fiction is intern Ethan
Cook and Equinox includes Joe Hujet of FELC. This
event raised $807 that was all donated to Feed My
Starving Children through free will donations and the
sale of t-shirts that were hand-dyed by interns and created by local artist and Breakfast Club member Mia
Russell. There are a few shirts left for sale and can be
purchased through the Church Office for $10 a piece
with proceeds going to seed money to host Feed My
Starving Children again next year.
The evening saw over 100 people come through Harmony Cafe and participate in some form with the evening. Sue Swanson spoke and shared the ministry of
Feed My Starving Children, a “thank you” to all 500+
volunteers and a request for financial donations.
Thanks to all who helped make the night a success.

focused ministries that are vital to the work of First English.
Constitution & By-Laws Task Force
Background: At its February 7, 2010, Annual Meeting,
FELC Congregation approved a motion that a task force
be formed to review FELC’s current Constitution and ByLaws for needed revisions.
Goal:
Goal Review the current FELC Constitution and ByLaws for needed revision including the incorporation of
the ELCA Churchwide Model Constitution Amendments
that were approved at the 2009 Churchwide Synod Assembly. (More background can be found on page 17.)
Process Involved: Comparing the ELCA Model Constitution with previous FELC Constitutions and By-laws.

From the Call Committee
I’ve only participated in a halfmarathon, but if I extrapolate out, I
can imagine that the last .2 miles are
the toughest of the 26.2 mile race.
Right now, the call committee is in
the last .2 miles of our marathon.
We’ve come a long way. We’ve accomplished a lot. We
can see the finish line. We’re excited and hopeful that
we’ll reach it soon. We conducted the first round of
interviews in late July/early August. The candidates we
have interviewed are all exceptional pastors, and the
decision of who to call will be difficult. The call committee has been working diligently. We are making
progress, and we hope to report to you soon our recommendation for whom to call as our senior pastor.
Please continue to keep us in your prayers. We appreciate your cheers and encouragement as we approach
the finish line.

Summer Coffee Hour
For the Downtown Site, on those Sundays
where 9:15 a.m. worship is in City Park,
coffee hour will be provided only after the
8 a.m. worship in the Gathering Area. If
you need your morning coffee, juice or
cookie before 9:15 a.m. worship please
plan on arriving a few minutes early and
visit with the coffee hosts. Donations of
baked goods will be discontinued for the
summer and will resume after Labor Day.
On those Sundays that worship is held indoors either due
to scheduling or weather, the traditional Sunday morning
coffee hour will be held (after 8 a.m. and after 9:15 a.m.)
For the North Site, the bagel order from Festival Food is discontinued through September 5. Please use the purchased
cookies that are in the kitchen or if you like to bake, donate a
favorite recipe. Bagels will resume after Labor Day.
Day of Service - Downtown Site
Plans are being finalized for a day of service for the
Downtown Site on Thursday, September 9. Time slots
will be available throughout the day and a honey-do list
will be compiled of a variety of tasks to help get the
church ready for Rally Sunday, on September 12. Many
hands make little work so sign up in the Gathering Area
by Tuesday, September 7 so definite tasks can be finalized. Feel free to contact Jean Monson in the church
office with projects you feel need some TLC around the
Downtown Site.

Nursery Needs
Volunteers needed: Starting September 12, to provide
consistent loving nursery care, volunteers are needed to
take a turn every 6-8 weeks to staff the nursery during the
9:15 a.m. Downtown Site worship, the 10:30 a.m. North
Site worship, plus choir rehearsal or meetings. Parents,
friends, grandparents and confirmation or high school
students are encouraged to volunteer. A sign up schedule is posted by the nursery, so you can choose the
dates that fit your calendar. You may also e-mail the
coordinators with dates you can help. Volunteer coordinators Kathy Larson and Jodi Gaskill are creating a
list of volunteers, phone numbers and e-mails, so all
who volunteer will have a contact list in case you need
to call a substitute. Anita Damon will coordinate nursery volunteers for meetings and choir rehearsal. FELC
requests a completed volunteer application which includes permission to run a background check for all
who will work with children. The form will be sent to all
volunteers. Thank you for helping serve by taking a turn
to care for the youngest in our church family!
Nursery toy cleaning: It's time to wash and freshen up
the toys in the nurseries. Please come to help on
Wednesday, August 18 at 10 a.m. in the nursery at the
North Site or Monday, August 30 at 9 a.m. at the
Downtown Site. Most toys will be cleaned by washing them in the dishwasher. Larger items will be
washed in the nursery. Children are welcome to come
with you. Your help will make the nursery a safe,
pleasant place as we prepare for the fall programs.

Calling FELC Members to be
Part of the Constitution and
By-Laws Task Force
At the February 7, 2010 Annual Meeting, FELC congregation approved the following motion: That a Task Force
be formed to review FELC’s Constitution and By-Laws
for needed revisions and that the membership of this
Task Force include members from this congregation via
sign-up sheets and one to two Council Members, and
that this Task Force select its own chairperson who is a
non-council member.
Rationale for that motion was that there is a provision
in FELC’s documents that is in direct conflict with the
ELCA Model Constitution For Congregations; and, that
there are several amendments to The ELCA Model Constitution for Congregations that were approved at the
August 17-23, 2010, Churchwide Assembly that need to
be incorporated in FELC’s Constitution and By-Laws.
The Constitution and By-Laws are documents communicating the congregation’s powers and rights as well as
the responsibilities of the Congregational Council. The
By-Laws communicate how congregations plan to follow
through with the Constitution’s provisions. All congregations under the ELCA are expected to use and follow
the ELCA Model Constitution For Congregations in
drafting as well as revising their respective Constitution
and By-Laws.
The approved FELC Task Force is seeking members from
both FELC’s Downtown and North Sites to be part of
this task force. Steve Ford and Terry Maves have agreed
to represent the Council on the task force. Elizabeth
Hensel, FELC member, has indicated interest in serving
as one FELC’s congregational members. The three of
them encourage FELC members to prayerfully consider
being a part of this task force; and, encourages those
interested members to sign up on the sign-up sheets
that are posted in the Gathering Area at both sites.
FELC’s membership voice does play an important part
in this process. This task force is planning to have its
first meeting in August 2010. Questions about this Task

LWR Coffee Project
It begins at breakfast: the
opportunity to make a difference. That first cup of
coffee brims with possibilities: it’s not only the coffee
bean that matters, but also
how it is grown and by
whom.
Fair trade products: are
produced by small-scale
grower associations organized to promote social equity and sustainability.
Farmers sell directly to retailers at an agreed-upon
fixed price: the farmers’
profits are higher and their markets more stable. Equal
Exchange fair trade programs also provide credit to allow farmers to improve their growing techniques.
Our next LWR Coffee Project day will be on Sunday,
August 1, 2010.
2010 We are changing our pricing structure
so that our coffees will be $7 for all caffeinated coffees
and $8 for decaf coffees. Hot chocolate is $6, teas are $3
and chocolate bars are $1. Thank you for your wonderful
support of this project.
Linwood Place - Fox Valley
Lutheran Homes
Linwood Place, an ecumenical, independent living
apartment building has several one bedroom apartments available. Living at Linwood Place includes a
beautiful new community room for crafts/puzzles/
socializing or whatever interests one may have. Linwood Place is a secured, safe, and affordable living arrangement for a person who no longer wishes to live
alone in their home or apartment. A nurse is available
several times a week, and a church and communion
service are held each month. If you or someone you
know would benefit from living at Linwood Place,
please call Verna at 734-6711 to arrange for a visit, get
details, and select an apartment. Linwood Place is located at 425 E. Linwood Avenue, across the street from
Linwood Park. Call Verna if you have any questions or

Lutheran World Relief School
Kits
As your family shops for school supplies, please include
some items you can donate for Lutheran World Relief
School Kits. Your donations will help children around
the world. Specific items still needed are:
• blunt Fiskar scissor
• ruler with inches and cm, pencil sharpener
• 2½” erasers
• box of 24 crayons
• spiral notebooks

VSA Wisconsin– The State
Organization on Arts and
Disability Choir
The VSA Choir is a choir for adults with and without disabilities. It was created by the same Kennedy Foundation that created Special Olympics. They rehearse every
week at FELC in Fellowship Hall at the Downtown Site
from 6-7 p.m. The fall session begins on Tuesday, September 14 and ends with a Christmas Concert on December 21 at
6:30 p.m. Another session begins in February and ends
with a concert in May. The choir also performs at several
community events during the year. If you are interested

who is a member of our congregation, or just show up at
FELC on September 14 at 6-7 p.m. and check it out.
SCCM Program Update
Thank you to all of you for sharing with us your Spiritual
Care Card Ministry (SCCM) participation preferences!
The plan is to have this new ministry program "up and running" in
September 2010. Watch the September newsletter and bulletin
announcements for initial meeting dates to be held at both sites
as well as more updates. If you
haven't returned your database
form to the office, please mail it,
drop it off at the church office or
place it in the offering plate. Staff
have been appreciative as you update the database information. Also, you can still let the SCCM program
know of your participation preferences on the
same data base form
and/or ask additional
questions by contacting Elizabeth Hensel,

finalized. Interview questions
are being developed. Dean Haas
and Gordy Jeppson will be available at the next call committee
meeting for any last minutes
questions. A mock interview to
help prepare the call committee
will be completed. Field of candidates has been narrowed to
five. Initial interviews will be
done in July. A dessert for council to meet each of the candidates will be hosted by the Jeppsons.

ministry team will be responsible for the organization of the
discipleship small group and the
pastor support small group.
4) No action be taken on forgiveness letters. 5) Former members
will be identified and contacted
to be offered the opportunity to
complete the Healing Survey. 6)
Members who requested personal contact will be contacted
by Steve Ford.

properly identify all ministry
team members along with identification of ministry team council liaisons.

Spotlight on...missionDENVER!
On Saturday, July 17, seven youth, one intern, and two adults boarded a fifteen passenger van and headed out West with
hearts of servants and the determination
of saints. Thus began this summer’s
FELC's high school mission trip: missionDENVER. After a few transportation trials,
our group finally got into their van late at
night on that Saturday and headed out
west to Denver, Colorado. Pastor Bauer,
Paul Kayser, Ethan Cook, Samantha,
Logan, and Parker Baerenwald, Ryan Surprise, Sarah Bauer, Ethan Kayser, and
Tyler DesRochers represented FELC this
year while serving with YouthWorks! Participants served in a variety of
ways during the YouthWorks mission trip.
Students spent all week in Denver, CO
partnered with local organizations and
programs that seeked to address the very
basic needs of residents. Students served
at places like: children’s programs, elderly
centers, soup kitchens/homeless shelters
and thrift stores. Make sure to chat with
these folks and find out their adventures
in service.
