she said. “When you’re

The new bus, which uses

the agency first purchased the bus we’re using now, we thought we’d
be doing a lot more out of

the bus stays in town from

Currently, the main service provided by the mobility bus is “tours for nursing homes in surrounding
areas,” she said.

Sally Says
“February is merely as long
as is needed to pass the
time until March.”
~ Dr. J. R. Stockton
One week of February
is gone already. Three
left to go. For some, time
may be passing by quickly,
for others it may be
dragging. I am somewhere
comfortably in the middle
with the passage of time
this winter as I try very
hard to resist the urge to
wish the time away, at least
until we get to spring, then
time can come down to a
crawl. Each day is special
and we just have to realize
how precious our time is.
Some days I struggle with
the whole “stop and smell
the roses” concept as I try
to wait patiently for milder
weather. Generally, I find
if the sun is out, no matter
how cold it is, it helps me
get through the day with a
cheerful disposition. The
days are certainly getting
noticeably longer. Strange
that the longest day is in
the middle of what I think
of as summer, though
it’s really just the end of
spring. Stranger still is
that from that day on, the
days begin to get shorter
again. I am anxious for
the milder temperatures to
get here so I can enjoy my
patio again. Last spring, I
had my neighbour over for
tea on the patio and there
were still huge patches of
snow everywhere. And
what’s more, my neighbour
braved the elements
and wore her sandals for
the occasion. We were
bundled up in warm fleecy
spring jackets and sipped
our tea with great pleasure
as we traded ideas for
planting season. Can’t wait
to do that again. Sharon,
make sure your sandals
are ready and waiting by
the back door!
Our Directors of Ministry,
Geoff and Dawn, were on
a well deserved retreat this
past week. It is a mandatory
retreat for all officers and
ministers of the Salvation
Army. Each February they
gather in one location and
enjoy a little fellowship,
entertainment and a
couple of sessions and
assemblies. In general,
they get some down time.
With spirits rested and
buoyed, everyone returns
to their respective corps
to begin again with a fresh
outlook.
I may check to see if there
is a retreat for Family
Services
Coordinators.
Four days is barely
enough to recover from
the Christmas work so
best not to even get into
that frame of mind. Of
course, I am saying this in
jest. My retreat seems to
come in the form of a nasty
flu each year after the
Christmas work is done. I
suppose that is when one
is most vulnerable. With
energy depleted and a
quieter time coming each
January, I suspect the
body knows that now is
the time to give into a virus
or cold or strep. I think I got
the three for one deal last
month as it took several
weeks to recover from it.
But I did recover and I am
grateful for that.
Wiarton Willie did not see
his shadow. Thank you
Willie. Still, Groundhog
Day came in like a lion, a
phrase we usually reserve
for the beginning or end
of March. Schools were
closed, buses cancelled
and in general things
ground to a halt until the
huge snow drifts were
cleared away by town
crews. It was a snow
day for many as the OPP
were urging people not to
travel unless absolutely
necessary. We can let
winter have one or two
more kicks at the can since
we are on the downhill
side of the season now.
Fingers crossed that we
don’t encounter any more
huge snowfalls. There
are some very cold days
predicted over the next
few days, so let’s try to
stay warm and safe.
The food bank looks great
and as I have mentioned
before, we can always use
more Kraft Dinner, but for
the moment we are not in
dire need of any one thing
in particular.
Thank you to all who
support the work we do.
Blessings.

Book Review: “Love, Rosie” by Cecelia Ahern
by Jordyn Martinez
Love, Rosie by Cecelia
Ahern was published in
2004 as her second novel.
It was originally titled
Where Rainbows End,
but for the US edition the
name was changed. The
book is written entirely in
letters, emails, and various
forms of correspondence
between the two main
characters, Rosie Dunne
and Alex Stewart. It starts
off with little notes and
birthday invitations when
they are small children,
and the whole book spans
many years as they grow
together and apart.
Alex and Rosie were
always best friends, but as
they grow up it’s harder to
remain best friends. One
of them moves away, and
family or significant others
eventually get in the way.
Everybody always thought
they would end up together,
but that’s not always as
easy as it seems.
Since the story is told
through
letters
and
emails, all of the action is
secondary. Readers get the
reaction to events without
seeing anything happen
first hand. While this can be
frustrating, it’s a great way
to get the consequences of
the events and smoothly
pass a lot of time. The other
issue with this style is that
there is a lot of opportunity
for unrealistic dialogue. In
an email, people would not
generally recap all of the
events of the night before,
but it is necessary to keep
the readers up to speed.
Because of this, there is a
bit of reading between the
lines and guess work, but
most of the time it’s pretty
clear what is going on.
While the letters are
usually between Rosie and
Alex, there are also letters
between them and their
respective family members,
as well as Rosie’s best
friend. It feels like Rosie’s
story is the main one, and
her character gets a lot
of time and sympathy
from readers. She is very
relatable and her problems
are realistic, while Alex is a
bit of a frustrating character
perhaps because the focus
is not on him as much.

After a trip to Alberta to buy
cattle in the early 1990s,
the Taylors came back to
their farm near Thorndale

Tree Tips: Dormancy
Dormancy is the period in
a life cycle of a plant where
growth and development
is temporarily halted. In
plants there are two different kinds of dormancy,
endo-dormancy happens
in between the growing
seasons (e.g. winter)
and eco-dormancy. During endo-dormancy the
plant will actually track
chilling hours, or hours
when the temperature is
above freezing, and not
put energy into growth
for a short time. But as
the weather becomes
colder for longer the plant
will enter into a deeper
dormancy or eco-dormancy.
Eco-dormancy
is where growth and development is stopped
and the tree begins to
conserve energy due to
environmental changes.
In a deciduous tree it is
especially easy to see
when it has entered its
eco-dormant phase. The
leaves begin to lose their
green color and fall off the
tree. This only happens
in deciduous and some
conifer trees, it should not
be happening with your
evergreen. Evergreens
do become dormant but,
it is harder to determine.
During eco-dormancy, a
tree begins to use the
nutrients and sugars that
have been stored over
the past growing season.
Since the metabolism of
the tree has slowed considerably these resources
are used up very slowly,
over an extensive time
period.
Dormancy is extremely
important to the life cycle
of a tree. If the tree did
not go dormant over the
winter, it would quickly be
killed by the extreme cold,
and lack of nutrients.

Dear Editor
Haitian Dinner
On Wednesday January
28th our Haitian Dinner was
served to a full house. This
was the 8th year in a row
that Damen’s Restaurant
has sponsored this meal.
We raised $ 6000, money
that will be use to build a
Secondary School in St.
Marc, Haiti.
Many thought that this was
‘the best meal yet’ and we
think that Burt has become
the greatest Haitian cook
around.
Once again we like to thank
all the volunteers who
tirelessly offered their time
and energy to help prepare,
serve, and clean up.
Heartfelt thanks go to all
our supporters who bought
dinner tickets and gave
donations, but as always a
very special thank you goes
to the Damen family, who,
through their generosity, for
the 8th year in a row has
made it possible for us to
send 100% to Haiti.
Thank you so much,
Monique & Tony

World Sports Roundup
NFL – Super Bowl XLIX was
one to remember. Some of the
notable story lines heading into
last Sunday’s game included
Marshawn Lynch’s broken
record “I’m just here so I won’t
get fined” answer during media
availability, and the Patriots’
ubiquitous
“Deflate-gate”
scandal – but the game lived
up to the hype. The Patriots
stopped a last-minute Seahawks
drive literally on the goal line
late in the fourth quarter, holding
on to win 28-24 in Arizona.
Seahawks head coach Pete
Carroll has faced harsh criticism
in the aftermath of the loss for
not getting the ball to Lynch, his
star running back, for the crucial
red-zone play. Instead, Seattle
Seahawks QB Russell Wilson
elected to throw and was picked
off by New England cornerback
Malcolm Butler, stopping the
defending champs’ late charge
on the doorstep. Pats QB Tom
Brady, who won his third Super
Bowl MVP award, also became
the all-time leader for Super
Bowl touchdown passes with 12,
surpassing Joe Montana’s 11.

#17 Evan Krassey
DOB: April 1, 1998
Age: 16
Hometown: Atikokan, ON
Position: Forward
Height: 6’ 3”
Weight: 195 lbs
Krassey scored a goal in
two of his last three games
for St. Marys including
one versus Leamington
Jan. 29. He has five points
in 31 games as a Lincoln.
He was the team’s only
goal scorer in a 6-1 loss
Jan. 23 against LaSalle.
NHL East – No other team in
the NHL has a worse record
over their last 10 games than
the Toronto Maple Leafs (0-91). Not Edmonton, who opened
February with a 5-4 win over
San Jose, and not even
Buffalo, who ended a 14-game
skid Wednesday by gutting out
a 3-2 road win over the Habs.
Meanwhile, the Buds have just
one win in 2015 (all the way
back on Jan. 9), dropping their
other 13 games while being
shutout four times. They’ve
slid to seventh in the Atlantic
Division and 13th in the Eastern
Conference. Toronto captain
Dion Phaneuf is expected to
miss his fifth straight game
tonight with a hand injury.
Coach Peter Horachek said
he’s hopeful Phaneuf may be
able to play Saturday night.
The Leafs (22-26-4), who are
in New Jersey to face the
Devils (20-22-9), are the only
Eastern Canadian team in
action tonight. Tomorrow night
they host Edmonton, while
the Sens host Columbus and
Montreal welcomes the Devils.
NHL West – Trade rumours
are swirling following the latest
development in the ongoing
saga of the Winnipeg Jets
and winger Evander Kane.
On Tuesday, prior to a game
against the Canucks in his
hometown of Vancouver, Kane
reportedly broke team dress
code by showing up for a pregame meeting in a track suit.
An altercation between Kane
and teammate Dustin Byfuglien
reportedly followed, before
Kane went AWOL. Sources
told Sportsnet that Kane later
missed another pre-game
meeting and finally told the
team an hour before puck drop
he wouldn’t be playing that night.
Some speculate the 23-yearold has been battling an injury
that may require season-ending
surgery. Kane has 22 points in
37 games this season. As of
Thursday afternoon, the Jets
(26-18-9) sit in the first Western
Conference wild-card spot,
ahead of Vancouver (28-18-3)
by two points. Prior to tonight’s
game versus Chicago, the Jets
have lost their last five games.
Lincs drop a pair to Western
Conference leaders
NBA – The only thing the
Raptors have been consistent
at lately is being inconsistent.
After matching a season-best
six game winning streak with a
key 120-116 win over the thirdplace Washington Wizards
Saturday, Toronto has dropped
their last two. Their 109-93 loss
to Brooklyn on Wednesday
night also cost them their
pristine divisional game record,
which now sits at 9-1. A night
earlier, they had opened a
five-game stand at the ACC
(where they had been 18-7 up
until Groundhog Day) with an
ugly 82-75 loss to Milwaukee.
At 33-17, the Raptors still sit
in second place in the Eastern
Conference with a two-game
buffer over Washington (3119), who also lost Wednesday
and who have dropped their
last four overall. Toronto
holds a league-best 12-game
lead in their conference, in
front of second place Atlantic
Division rivals the Brooklyn
Nets (20-28). The Raps host
the Clippers (33-16) tonight at
7:00 pm.
Australian Open – On Jan.
31, American Serena Williams
beat Russian Maria Sharapova
in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 (5) to
continue her unbeaten streak of
six Australian Open titles. It was
the 33-year-old Williams’ 19th
Grand Slam crown. Her record
over Sharapova improved to
17-2 all-time. Only Steffi Graf
(22) and Margaret Smith Court
(24) have won more Women’s
Grand Slam titles. On the men’s
side, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic
won his fifth Australian Open
and eighth career Grand Slam,
topping Andy Murray 7-6 (5),
6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-0 in Sunday’s
final. The Scot has made it to
the Australian Open final four
times, and lost all four matches.
He previously lost to Federer in
2010, and then Djokovic in 2011
and 2013. Djokovic is 5-for-5 in
the finals at Melbourne. The
only other man to have won at
least five times at the Australian
tournament, Aussie native Roy
Emerson, was in the crowd to
watch the final. Emerson was a
six-time champion (1961, 19631967).
PGA – The last week saw two
wildly divergent scores from
two of golf’s biggest stars. On
Jan. 30, Tiger Woods shot
his worst score as a pro, a
record that stretches back two
decades and over 1,250 official
rounds. He bogied on his last
hole for an 11-over-par 82 and
missed the cut at the Phoenix
Open. It was also the first time
in his career that he missed the
cut in consecutive PGA Tour
events, with the most recent
one having been last August
at the PGA Championship.
His previous worst score
was an 81 in the stormy third
round of the 2002 British
Open. Two days later, Rory
McIlroy won his second Dubai
Desert Classic title in six years,
matching the lowest total in
the tournament’s history with
a 22-under 266. The Northern
Irishman had previously won
the tournament in 2009, his
first win as a professional. He
secured the win Sunday with
a 2-under 70 in the final round,
winning by three strokes.

NO CUTS
Once again I am feeling helpless and as if I
am beating a dead horse (health care system).
I have learned a couple of things in the last short while. A
friend was hospitalized in London. His wife does not drive
but people realize that in extreme cases London may be one
of the best places anywhere to be. Rides in such a case can
be arranged. After a few days (too few?) he was transferred.
Since they live just a taxi ride from the Stratford hospital it
would be common sense to think that he would be transferred there (perhaps to a room with a bed that has no funding to be used and no staff to care for a patient). Instead he
was sent to Clinton which is scarcely any closer than London.
I’m sorry, but to me that is a reduction in convenience from
days past. Isn’t that a reduction in service? There is a chain:
Loss of convenience: Loss of service: Directly a result of cut
backs. They say that health care is getting better. I ask better
than what (or when)? With the great strides Medicine has
made it is a shame that the delivery of health care may never
return to levels we were accustomed to.

Home Care leaves a lot to be desired. A CCAC case
manager can be called upon to assess needs. Can you
believe that a senior that has an idea of a retirement home
or nursing home as being similar to an asylum would down
play their condition or needs? Can they remember how many
times they have fallen but would not trigger their alert? I hear
tales of struggles to get up but what good does that do on
the CCAC chart if no solutions are offered that would involve
health care dollars. Hospice is mentioned as an option but to
the best of our understanding that involves strictly volunteers (some may be qualified medical practitioners). Bless
these people. In any case unless a person is diagnosed with
Alzheimers or a serious dementia they can choose to die
laying on the floor or by whatever misfortune befalls them.
How can you tell someone they are not really fit to look after
themselves? If we are lucky there is no broken hip to never
recover from. We hope the memory lapses don’t extend to
forgotten stove burners (How many lives could that endanger?)
I am fully aware that in a great many cases there is or can
be no need to have seniors in nursing facilities or hospitals.
What I am saying is that it is very frustrating trying to cope
with a system that does not seem to recognize the amount
of help some seniors need to stay in their home safe and
sound. How can a senior on oxygen with bad vision and poor
balance hook up their portable tank load it and the laundry
on the walker and go down the hall to the shared laundry?
You can ask them not to but when you are not around will the
tank be hooked up for the trip? If more help was available
(and they would swallow enough pride) would they still need
to do any laundry? If you are retired and have money maybe
these things are not a big deal. You can provide the help or
pay for it. We are not all that fortunate.(An old statement that
bears repeating)

REMINISCING: THIS WILLPASS: It’s not as regular as the
fever I get every spring to ride a motorcycle but since I was
a teen every now and then in the midst of a snow storm I
think I need a snowmobile. I can’t remember the years when
cousin Dave got the Nordic or the “Silver Bullet” TNT. It must
have been the early 70’s. During those rough winters the
roads and fields were full of Snow Jets from Proudlove’s

joined the Armstrong crew on a flock of Yamahas. Of course
there were lots of Skidoo’s. There were so many manufactures that you never knew what you’d see out there. In those
days not many sleds were over 440 cc’s. Since there were
no groomed trails that I remember it was imperative that the
machine was light and nimble if you wanted to break the trail.
The big cruiser weights were better suited to packed tracks
and following as I remember. They did however sport a wider
track that helped keep them afloat. Today’s machines have
huge suspension travel and are nimble and fast and comfortable. My choice of punishment was a small JDX4 with a
small twin engine and far too heavy a chassis. It loved the
hard pack but was hopeless in light deep snow. After carrying and lifting and pushing that machine and putting up with
the bone jarring ride and unreliability of the era it’s a wonder

World News Briefs
Syria – Two nations mourned the
loss of citizens to ISIS extremists
this week, with gruesome
videos showing the murders of
Japanese journalist Kenji Goto
and First Lieutenant Muadh alKasasbeh, a Jordanian pilot, both
being released. Goto reportedly
traveled to Syria in late October,
leaving behind his wife, family
and newborn daughter. He was
captured soon after by ISIS, who
control about a third of both Syria
and Iraq. In response to the
video showing Goto’s murder,
Japan has ordered heightened
security precautions at airports
and
Japanese
embassies
around the world. Japan had
not previously been directly
involved in the fight against the
militants. Rejecting an offer from
the Jordanian government to
swap an al-Qaeda prisoner for
their hostage al-Kasasbeh, ISIS
released a video Wednesday
showing the pilot being burned
to death inside a locked cage.
Jordan responded immediately
by scheduling executions for five
convicted terrorists, including the
failed suicide bomber whom they
had wanted to trade.
Iceland – For the first time
since the Viking age, a new
temple to the Norse gods such
as Thor and Odin will soon be
constructed near the Icelandic
capital of Reykjavik. Worship of
the pagan gods in Scandinavia,
made popular today in Marvel’s
Thor films, was ended with
the rise of Christianity about
1,000 years ago, but a modern
version of Norse paganism
has been gaining popularity in
Iceland. Membership in a group
that promotes faith in the Norse
gods as “poetic metaphors and
a manifestation of the forces of
nature and human psychology”
has tripled in the country in the
last 10 years to 2,400 members.
Iceland’s population is about
330,000. The temple will be
circular and dug four metres (13
feet) down into a hill overlooking
Reykjavik, with a dome on top
to let in sunlight. It will host
ceremonies such as weddings
and funerals. Iceland’s neopagans still celebrate the
ancient ritual of Blot with music,
reading, eating and drinking,
but nowadays refraining from
sacrificing animals.
Canada – On Tuesday, Foreign
Affairs Minister John Baird
officially resigned from his
position in the Prime Minister’s
cabinet. He also announced
he will resign his MP seat in
the Ottawa area, and will not
seek re-election. Baird, 45,
was first elected to Parliament
in 2006, representing Ottawa
West-Nepean, and re-elected
in 2008 and 2011. Before
being appointed foreign affairs
minister in May 2011, Baird
held a number of important
roles in the Harper government.
Some of his cabinet roles
have included President of the
Treasury Board, environment
minister, minister of transport,
and Government House Leader.
He was first elected as an
MPP in 1995 at the age of 26,
later serving in premier Mike
Harris’ cabinet. Coupled with
the resignation and subsequent
death of Jim Flaherty, Baird’s
decision has raised eyebrows,
as two of Harper’s most
powerful ministers have now left
the cabinet in less than a year.
The next federal election must
be held by Oct. 19 at the latest.

USA – The chair of
the
American
Federal
Communications Commission
(FCC) recently unveiled what
he calls the “strongest open
Internet
protections
ever
proposed” by the agency. FCC
chair Tom Wheeler said that, in
order to uphold the principle of
a free and open Internet (net
neutrality), he supports the
regulation of Internet service
like a public utility. The plan
would let the agency prevent
Internet service providers from
blocking access to websites,
slowing down content or
providing paid ‘fast lanes’ for
Internet service. “It is regulation
to make sure that there is
somebody watching out for the
consumer,” he said. “There will
be ongoing rules, in perpetuity,
so that there will be a yardstick
to measure what’s fair for
consumers.” His proposal
comes after the FCC received
a record-setting number of
comments — nearly four million,
almost all in support of strong
protections. The FCC will vote
on Wheeler’s proposal on Feb.
26.

WEEKEND SMILES
The good old days!
You’ll enjoy the good old days
all over again. Looking back,
it was the best of times. it’s
hard to believe that we have
lived as long as we have. Do
you remember the good old
days like this?
As children, we would ride in
cars with no seat belts or air
bags. Riding in the back of a
pickup truck on a warm day
was always a special treat.
Our houses and baby cribs
were covered with bright colored lead-based paint. We
had no childproof lids on
medicine bottles, doors, or
cabinets, and when we rode
our bikes, we had no helmets.
(Let’s not even mention hitchhiking to town as a young
kid!)
We slept without flame retardant pajamas, without air
conditioning, with doors and
windows open.
Our dogs did not have rabies shots, distemper shots,
parvo shots, and we didn’t
pour chemicals on them or
on us to repel fleas and ticks
and mosquitoes. We followed
along in the big white clouds
sprayed out by the city trucks
to kill mosquitoes breathing
in the wonderful smell of DDT.
We raced around town without adults on Halloween, collecting treats and eating them
as we went along without
having them x-rayed first. We
drank water from the garden
hose and not from a bottle.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps
and then rode down the hill,
only to find out we forgot the
brakes. After running into
the bushes a few times we
learned to solve the problem.
We would leave home in the
morning and play all day, as
long as we were back when
the streetlights came on. No
one was able to reach us all
day. We played dodgeball
and sometimes the ball would
really hurt. We ate cupcakes,
bread and butter, fried fat
back for breakfast along with
biscuits made with pure lard,
and drank sugar sodas, but
we were never overweight....
we were always outside playing. We played with cap pistols and toy rifles and rubber
knives. We took snakes or
frogs or lizards to school, but
never guns.
We waded barefoot through
muddy water in ditches
catching tadpoles and crawdads. We cut the grass with

OBITUARIES
IN MEMORIAM
Semple
Gail
Jim Semple of St. Marys, Ontario, died peacefully at the
age of 77 on Monday, February 2nd, 2015. Jim had a
tremendous 56 year marriage and was deeply cherished
by his wife Leona and the entire Semple Family.
Jim was a much loved father to his 4 children and his 6
grandchildren: his son Gary; his son Lyle and his wife
Judy and their three children Dyan, Karyn and Brady; his
daughter Colleen and her husband Bob Bryant and their
daughter Heather; and his daughter Judy and her husband
Scott Lane and their two children Brett and Evan.
Jim will be affectionately remembered by friends and
family as a man of integrity, honesty, dignity and respect.
His gentle guidance and unwavering commitment had a
profound impact on his family. Jim spent much of his life
contributing to his local community by being a member
of the Rotary Club and Lion’s Club. Jim valued the
importance of family above all else, never letting them
doubt that they were his highest priority.
The family will be eternally grateful to the staff at the St.
Marys hospital for the great kindness, compassion and
care that was given in Jim’s final hours. A Celebration
of Life open house will take place at the St. Marys Golf
& Country Club, 769 Queen Street East, St. Marys,
on Saturday, February 7, 2015 from 2 – 4 p.m. In lieu
of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Marys

about how the storms of life
can cause us to question

inspired me to think about
our periods of relative
calm and what that does
to our faith. Sometimes

We don’t have to wait
