This is the document from the Second Vatican Council that addresses Religious Life. It is particularly appropriate for us in Hudson to recognize this celebration because it is less than a year ago that we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the arrival of the Carmelite Sisters in Hudson. We are grateful for their presence in our community, their witness to living out the Gospel in a particular way, and the prayerful ministry they offer. This coming April they will also be hosting the final profession of vows with Sister Patricia Erickson of the Carmelites. A THANK YOU I want to thank all of you who gave me cards, gifts or invitations this Christmas. We are also blessed to have Sister Margaret Lamberty living and serving in our community. Sister Margaret continues to be a great witness to the students she serves at our school and the staff with whom she works. Moreover we remember with great fondness the Sisters who have served our community in the past, including the Sisters of Saint Agnes who taught in our school, and Sister Mary Mattern, Sister Marybeth Wilhelm, Sister Dalene Kube, Sister Bernadette Kalscheur, and Sister Yvonne Roscoe, all of whom served our parish in varied roles, but all substantial and impactful in her own way. With gratitude for the service many committed to Consecrated Life have given our community, to assist those currently serving in maintaining the passion in the present time, and to keep hope alive for the future, we continue each week to offer our Diocesan Vocation Prayer, praying that the Lord will continue to bless us with servant people willing to commit themselves to the Consecrated Life. 4-1-1 Save the date! The fifteenth annual Saint Patrick School Gala will be held on April 11, 2015! We'll be celebrating the fifteenth anniversary of our school gala and the one-hundred and fortieth anniversary of Catholic education in Hudson! Finally, included in the bulletin this week is a summary of our financials for the past six months. Our parish operates on a fiscal year that runs from July 1 to June 30. As part of our commitment to be transparent we have included a summary of our financials for your review as an insert in the bulletin, and it is also available online on our website. As you will notice by the report, the good news continues to be that we are paying down our mortgage. However, as explained previously by a member of our Finance Council when they spoke at each of the Masses, the greatest challenge we face is an unexpected decrease in collections. This began at the time of our capital campaign and continues. If it persists we will need to begin looking at our options to maintain a healthy cash flow, such as slowing the rate at which we are paying off our mortgage. More details will be coming every week! A MESSAGE FROM FR. JOHN Beginning with the First Sunday of Advent on November 30, in the Church we began a year dedicated to Consecrated Life. This dedicated year will run until the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2, 2016. In an opening message this year, Pope Francis explained that the purpose of devoting a year to Consecrated Life is so that we may look back on the past with gratitude for the significant contributions made by women and men. These include Sisters, Brothers, and Priests who have committed themselves to live religious vows – to both the Church and the world – and in the present time, to If you would like to review a complete set of our financial statements, we simply ask that you make an appointment with our Finance Director Barbara Kaiser. 3 FEBRUARY 8, 2015 SAVE THE DATES: Saint Patrick Parish Lenten Speaker Series with Jackie Witter: Mondays: March 2 and March 9. If we consider that God is the Divine Bridegroom and the Church is his Bride, then the prophets can be seen as “spiritual marriage counselors.” They afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted, calling us to return to our covenant relationship with God. They urge us to repentance, warn us of the dangers of sin, and announce the blessings of faithfulness. Their prophetic words speak to us even today, as they draw us closer to our heavenly Bridegroom. Saint Patrick Parish will begin a 10 week study, “The Prophets: Messengers of God’s Mercy” on Thursday, February 19 at 6:00 – 7:30 PM in the Knights of Columbus room. To register, please contact Ellen O’Brien at 715-381-5120 x-101 or e-mail: church@stpatrickofhudson.org “OREMUS” A CATHOLIC PRAYER STUDY PROGRAM This eight week study during Lent will be offered on Thursday mornings from 9:15 to 11:15 AM at Saint Patrick Parish. It will teach the essentials of a fruitful prayer life. Classes will be held in the K of C room beginning on February 19th and ending on April 9th. The program includes a workbook for reflection and prayer, DVD lectures by Fr. Mark Toups and small discussion groups. This study is an excellent opportunity to deepen your relationship and your conversation with God. To register call Shirley Carlson at 715-377-7579. 4 ! CARING AND SHARING HANDS Faith Formation at Saint Patrick It is Saint Patrick Parish turn to serve breakfast Tuesday, February 10, to the homeless and others in need at Sharing and Caring Hands in Minneapolis. If you would like to volunteer, we leave from Saint Patrick lower parking lot at 8:15 AM and return to the church by noon. If you have any questions, call Terry B. at 715-386-5197. With all the excitement around Catholic Schools Week, it is sometimes easy to forget the Initial Faith Formation process at Saint Patrick and the 500 students enrolled in it. This process is almost entirely dependant on the support and volunteer spirit of the parish. If people joyfully answer the call to serve as catechists then even the worst curriculum comes alive for our young disciples. If no one answers the call then even the best curriculum in the world will do nothing. ATTEND PRO-LIFE RALLY The Knights of Columbus, St. Croix Council 1762 along with parishioners from Saint Patrick Parish and Saint Dominic Church in Frederic participated in a pro-life rally at the Minnesota State Capitol. The rally began with a Prayer Service for Life at the Cathedral of Saint Paul. From there thousands marched to the Minnesota State Capitol. The annual Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL) March for Life commemorates the millions of lives lost to abortion. The 41st annual MCCL March for Life marked the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's January 22, 1973, Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton decisions. Pictured are Fr. Patrick McConnell along with some of the Knights and parishioners that participated in the rally. It takes a little over 95 catechists to staff the current Initial Faith Formation offerings. High School alone needs 42 catechists to teach courses and host small faith groups. This year we have been scraping by, particularly in finding subject instructors with our new high school courses. It is our hope that making the commitment 6 weeks long and giving instructors flexibility would result in many new and accomplished catechists. OUR Wish list . . . ! Subject Catechists to lead the instruction of high school students in a particular faith topic. We are currently looking for catechists for the following subjects for this Spring (March/April): Scripture: we are looking for two individual catechists who have a passion for learning about sacred scripture and sharing that passion with young people. Vocation/Sexuality: we are looking for a young couple or two to share the process of discerning God’s call to holiness and the joy of authentic love with young people. SOCIAL CONCERNS CORNER HUDSON BACKPACK PROGRAM CHILDREN’S MINISTRY POSITION Saint Patrick Parish seeks to hire a person responsible for Children’s Ministry. This will be a part-time position, generally about 15 hours per week. This individual will oversee coordination of the Faith Formation program for children on Wednesday evenings (through grade 5), and development of a comprehensive program for children on Sunday mornings, which includes Children’s Liturgy of the Word. Saint Patrick Parish members are in their fourth year of participating in the food collection for the Hudson Area Backpack Program. We provide food for River Crest Elementary and Saint Patrick School. This year we are providing 35 backpacks of nutritious food for families two times a month; this is the highest count we have ever had. In addition to the food donated in the green bags, each filled backpack has a voucher from County Market for free eggs, milk, bread, and cheese. Voucher items cost the program about $1,600 a month. Funds to cover the cost of the vouchers come from local groups such as the Lions Clubs, The Hot Air Affair, the Noon and Daybreak Rotaries, and Pepper Fest. Businesses like Dick’s Bar, American Bank, Central Bank, the Hudson Hospital, and Kozy Korner also support the program. The backpack program also receives funds from churches and individuals - there are no paid employees in the program; all 42 backpack members are volunteers. Three churches, United Methodist Church, First Presbyterian, and Mt. Zion Lutheran, working with the school counselor started providing backpacks of food for these hungry kids. Since then the program has grown to provide about 162 Backpacks of food sent home seventeen Fridays during the school year. The backpacks are sent home on Fridays to help supplement food needed for the weekend. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner items are included in each backpack. Generous people from nine local churches pick up a green bag with an attached menu, shop for the listed items, and then return the filled bag to their church. Volunteers pack the backpacks and deliver them to the school with which they work. All elementary schools, both public and private, participate in the program. Participants in the program sign up through their school counselor - volunteers for the program never have names of who is receiving a backpack. In an effort to protect the privacy of participants, a variety of generic backpacks are used, and the children in the program just stop by the school office or counselor’s office to grab their bags and head out the door. Thank you, Saint Patrick members, for your generous support of this program. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FISH FRY NIGHTS February 20 March 13 March 27 6 Heywood, Cari & Anderson, S.C.
