She was inspired to begin a local
branch of the service after finding
out about its success elsewhere in
the UK.
She is one of four volunteers for
the Keighley and Ilkley district, but
is now asking more people to get
involved.
“It’s such a simple idea, but it’s
positive, fun and I’m expecting a
lot of demand,” she said. “Lots of
people like to bake – though they
don’t have to be fantastic at it.

Free Cakes For Kids Keighley, which
provides birthday cakes for families
unable to do so
“It’s about helping people at a time when we’re hearing about the
numbers of food bank users going up.
“This is for families who may not be able to provide a birthday cake for a
child for whatever reason – maybe for financial reasons or because
someone is in hospital. We would bake the cake to a particular
personalised theme, then have it delivered to the family.”
The original UK Free
Cakes for Kids project
began in Oxford five
years ago.
