Gaydos, the clergy and the faithful of the Diocese of Jefferson City welcome you and hope that your time in our Mother Church may be an opportunity to share our faith and joy in Our Lord Jesus Christ. Our parish was formed in 1959 and was elevated to the title of Cathedral in 1968 and dedicated in 1974. Please enjoy the beauty of this spacious building dedicated to the Glory of God and the memory of Saint Joseph, the Husband of Mary. It was built for the inspiration of all who enter. Free tour booklets are available. All visitors who are not of the Roman Catholic faith are most welcome to join us in prayer and worship, but not to receive Holy Communion. Reception of Holy Communion is a sign of full unity and membership in the Catholic community. Together let us all pray for the unity of all believers. If you desire to become a member of the Roman Catholic Church or to become a member of the Cathedral Parish, please call the parish office at 573-635-7991. All contributions to the Cathedral ministries and maintenance are sincerely appreciated. Alleluia Sunday-Sixth Sunday February 15, 2015 SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS LENTEN REGULATIONS 2015 WELCOME to all who gather in our Cathedral Church for: The Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time and Ash Wednesday. ALLELUIA SUNDAY: The Sunday before Ash Wednesday is traditionally ‘Alleluia Sunday’. This comes from the fact that the Alleluia will not be sung again until the Great Easter Vigil. WEEK OF PRAYER: We ask each member of our Cathedral parish to pray for the members of one of the parishes or missions in our diocese this week. As a Cathedral Church, all our parishes are linked to us and we wish to deepen the spiritual bond with them. Therefore, we will pray this week for St. Boniface, Brunswick. The Time of Lent begins this year on Ash Wednesday, February 18 and ends with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, April 2, when the Easter Triduum begins. Lent is the principal penitential season in the Church year. All the Christian faithful are urged to develop and maintain a voluntary program of self-denial (in addition to the following items), serious prayer, and the performing of deeds of charity and mercy, including giving of alms. WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CONSECRATED LIFE: Pope Francis has asked us to remember in prayer, all members of communities of Male and Female Religious. This week we pray for the Living and Deceased members of, plus for an increase in vocations for, the Discalced Carmelites of the Sacred Heart and Saint Joseph, OCD. ABSTINENCE - Everyone 14 years of age and over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. FAST– Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 is required to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is permitted. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each person’s needs, but together these two should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids (including milk and fruit juices) are allowed. FROM DEATH TO NEW LIFE-The Cathedral Parish Family extends its sympathy and prayers to the family of Arnold Rehagen, father of Mark Rehagen, who teaches Latin at our Cathedral School. May he have eternal rest in his heavenly home and may the Lord give comfort and peace to his loved ones who mourn their loss. CONGRATULATIONS to Daniel Wood, son of Joshua & Catherine Wood, who was baptized in the Cathedral last weekend! Exempt from fasting and abstinence regulations: pregnant and/ or nursing women, manual laborers engaged in heavy, strenuous work, people who are sick and/or frail, as well as military personnel deployed or in hostile environments. People in doubt regarding fasting and abstinence should consult their parish priest/pastoral administrator or deacon. Disregarding completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. CONGRATULATIONS to Malissa Underwood & Jeffrey Briggler, who were married in the Cathedral last weekend! K of C LENTEN FISH FRY—Cathedral Undercroft Friday, February 20—4:30 to 7: 00 p.m. Adults: $9 Children 6-11 $5 (under 6 free) NEW CATHEDRAL BOOKKEEPER HOLY SILENCE The Cathedral family thanks, Ann Hake, for her past service, wishing her all the best in her new adventure and welcomes Jim Vignola. After managing his family business for over 25 years, Jim, a lifelong parishioner and alumnus of our school, has joined the parish office staff as accounting coordinator. Jim graduated from Helias, earned his B.S. degree in Business Administration from Columbia College and worked towards an MBA at Rockhurst University. He looks forward to many years of service in the parish office. “I would like to thank the parishioners and staff of the Cathedral for making the last nearly 5 years of my time spent here an absolute joy. You all are a tremendous blessing to me. The opportunity is now available for me to move forward with my life’s passion and desire at establishing my own business. God’s blessings to us all”. Ann Hake As is our custom during Lent, all Masses will conclude without a hymn. We will depart in silence, recalling the suffering of Jesus on the cross, for us as sinners. CHRIST RENEWS HIS PARISH Free Inspirational Books for Adults and Children: The Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) program encourages parishioners to support each other in spiritual growth. Therefore, to help you prepare for Easter during Lent, CRHP members wish to share inspirational and religious books they have found valuable in their spiritual journeys. Please take and enjoy any of the books on the table located at the picture of the Madonna. Joseph Hoi, Edina/Baring, Sr. Mary Ruth Wand, SSND, California, Deacon Larry Mitchell, Shelbina/Clarence, Seminarian Jose Lopez, Conception Seminary College. The Diocese has 12 Seminarians. CALLED BY NAME Thank you for your prayers for the recent Called by Name program sponsored by the Vocations Committee. There were 7 names submitted of young men and women who have the qualities needed in a future priest, sister, brother or as a deacon. Perhaps there are others in our parish community whose names were not submitted as part of this annual effort, but who indeed may have such a “calling”. The need for priests and sisters is great! Please continue to encourage and pray for vocations to the priesthood, consecrated life and diaconate. HOLY ROSARY-Come and join us on Thursday nights at 7:00 p.m. to pray the Most Holy Rosary in the daily Mass Chapel. CENTERING PRAYER will meet next on February 16, at 12:10 p.m. in the Chapel. Please join us. Contemplative Prayer is a powerful way of moving into a deepening experience of divine union. For questions, contact Barbara Poetker at (573) 8932064. MONTH OF THE HOLY FAMILY PSR is for students grades 1-8 who attend public school and seek instruction in their faith. The next class is February 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Cathedral School. If you have questions about this program contact: Cara Sue Cockerham (573) 291-4889. As you prepare for Lent, consider fasting from things that might stand in the way of you being the son, daughter, parent or spouse that God called you to be. Don’t be afraid to go against what the rest of popular culture tells you is important. Be careful of the words you use and the actions you take. Attend Mass as a family every weekend. Avoid listening to music or comedy programs that send sinful messages. Try listening to Catholic Radio. Avoid watching television shows or movies that portray family life in a negative fashion. Spend less time on the computer or other devices and more time with members of your family. By making a few changes in your life during the Lenten time, you will be amazed at how God will enrich your life. —Vocations Committee CONFIRMATION-Our next session is February 22, at 9:15 a.m. in the School Commons, on ‘Holiness is Possible’. For more information, contact Dave Lankford at (573) 635-9454. Our Confirmation is April 23, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process of inquiry, study, prayer, and sacraments by which adults are baptized or received into the Catholic Church, or receive the sacrament of Confirmation. The next class is Monday, February 16 at 6:15 p.m. at the Catholic Center, and will focus on Sacrament of Matrimony and Catholic family life. If you are interested or have questions, please call Dan Kempker at (573) 4965499 or email him at dkempker@gmail.com. “Lent is like a long ‘retreat’ during which we can turn back into ourselves and listen to the voice of God, in order to defeat the temptations of the Evil One. It is a period of spiritual ‘combat’ which we must experience alongside Jesus, not with pride and presumption, but using the arms of faith: prayer, listening to the word of God, and penance. In this way we will be able to celebrate Easter in truth, ready to renew the promises of our baptism.” —Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI VIRTUS TRAINING The Diocese of Jefferson City will hold a VIRTUS—Protecting God’s Children session on Wednesday, February 25, 6:30 p.m. at the Chancery. DYNAMIC CATHOLIC LENT PROGRAM I want to thank you again for bringing the Book Program to your parish at Christmas. You have planted seeds that will grow and spread far beyond what your eyes can see. People who hand out books at Christmas often ask us, “What’s next? How do we continue to inspire our parishioners?” This year, Dynamic Catholic is developing a new Lenten email program titled, "Best Lent Ever." The program is designed to help people rediscover the genius of Catholicism through simple but powerful daily email messages. Best Lent Ever will be led by Matthew Kelly and will offer daily spiritual coaching via email to all parishioners who sign up by Ash Wednesday (February 18). The Best Lent Ever program is free. Sign up online at BestLentEver.com. Be Bold. Be Catholic. CALLING ALL WAR VETERANS Do the WWII, Korea and Vietnam heroes in your life know that they have the opportunity to be flown to Washington DC, at no cost to them, so they can see the war memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifice? Central Missouri Honor Flight needs your help in finding these veterans for a trip of a lifetime. Applications can be found on our website: www.centralmissourihonorflight.com. The next flight is April 20, but time to express our thanks to these brave men and women is running out. Our nation loses 1,000 WWII veterans a day---that’s 20 a day in Missouri. You can help by identifying WWII veterans and get them signed up. Many are not internet savvy so download an application, take it to them, fill it out and mail it in. Words cannot begin to describe how meaningful this one-day trip is for them. You can only see it in their eyes and hear it in their voices. These great and humble Americans return from a Central Missouri Honor Flight to receive the heroes’ welcome they never received. UPCOMING EVENTS ST.
