At the Angus Branch:
A new 3D printer was purchased
over the summer and made available to
the public just prior to Christmas. “The
3D printer is to show people what is
possible in terms of technology and to
make something that might be out of
the reach of many people, accessible to
everyone,” explained Mark Stewart,
Manager of Public Services. Patterns
are available to print items, can be
found online, or you can create your
own if you are savvy with the software, or perhaps need a little guidance
from the Computer Intern. Cost is $1
to use the printer, and .10 for each
gram of material used to help cover the
costs.
Until the end of March, a
Community Access Site Youth Intern,
Friday, February 13
or a Computer Tutor is available to
help our community with free computer help, or help with any other electronic devices (tablets, e-readers, etc,
windows 8, emailing, etc.). The intern
is available Wednesday and Thursday
evenings, as well as Saturday all day,
and the entire week of March Break by
appointment.
A free documentary series is held
the first Saturday of each month, featuring feature length films from the
National Film Board. 3p.m. start,
snacks welcome.

f you are a runner and you live in the
Borden area, why not check out the
Borden Striders, a running club that
has existed at CFB Borden for many, many
years.
This friendly group of people meet for
two indoor runs twice weekly on Tuesday
and Thursday nights at 6:15 p.m.in the Buell
Gym and once weekly for an outdoor run on
Sunday, meeting at the Angus Tim Horton’s
at 8:15 a.m. Indoor practices use the running
track during the winter, and a mix of warmup, stretching and exercises between laps to
keep things interesting while the runners
take advantage of the track and work on
speed training. Outdoor practices are run
unless the weather is terrible, and runners
can expect a trip to Base and back, about 1620 kms. If you are new to the Striders, they
prefer you come to an indoor practice first
as they can give you tips about gear needed
for running outside in winter.
Once the snow is gone, the Striders move
outdoors and take advantage of Borden’s
many running trails.
“Because we have trails on the Base, we
mix it so that you are actually getting the
benefit of running on the non-paved trail,
you get the hill work, you use different muscles than you use on a road,” explains
Kiriam Thompson, Club President. “It’s not
always the same terrain, you have rocks,
you have roots, you go downhill, you go
uphill, you go uphill in sand, you go downhill in sand, grass… all those different elements help you become a better runner.
Because you are constantly changing, you
have to be aware, you have to react to whatever comes up, your muscles have to be
engaged so you get, in my opinion, a better
workout that way.”
The Strider’s membership encompasses a
wide variety of age groups and running abilities. There are currently two teenage members, adults and a few senior members who
share their experiences and any pointers they
can amongst themselves to make sure everyone gets the most benefit possible.
“It’s not just you. It’s in fact the running
community that helps you achieve everything
that you do,” says Thompson. “When we go
out as a group we encourage each other even
when you don’t know you are. By running
beside that person, you are helping them by
motivating them to keep going. People notice
what you do, by observation and by following, tempo, speed, form…running upright,
moving arms, etc. We always go in a group so
there’s never one person running by themselves. Typically in our group we have people
Au pas de course!
S

running at the front and others at the back and
people in the middle. There are always people
in the back, not just one, but a couple to keep
them motivated. You are never left alone, you
are never left behind.”
The Striders participate regularly in races
throughout the year. The first race is called
‘Yours Truly’, which is an outdoor, worldwide event starting from the Buell Gym at
9 a.m. on February 22, that allows each runner to choose their own distance and then post
it, with their time on the run’s international
website. If you are interested in this race, but
not a club member, you can contact Kiriam
Thompson at ext. 7834 or email
kiriam.thompson@forces.gc.ca as there are
limited places available.
As the year continues, they will race in one
of the oldest races on the continent,
Hamilton’s 30K Around the Bay in March, as
well as a race in Kingston in June, and again
in Paris, ON in October at the Run for the
Toad. The Striders always participate as a
group and have a great time.
Currently, the club is looking for new
members, as well as those who might be interested in helping run future clinics and helping
with the Young Striders, a group of youth runners that is on hiatus for this year. If you are
interested in joining the Striders, please do not
hesitate to contact the club President at the
email address above. See you on the trails!
Striders prepare for the 2014 ‘Yours Truly’ run.
Congratulations to Dot Butler on her 46 years
at Angus-Borden Guardian Pharmacy.
Please join us to wish Dot well, and enjoy cake
and coffee on Friday, February 13 from 10 am - 1 pm.
Such a remarkable
length of service and
commitment is a rare
accomplishment.
We are very grateful for
your dedication!

A well-kept secret

ou may have heard about
Borden’s Subgym, but
perhaps you aren’t familiar with it. The time has come to
debunk the myth! The Subgym,
Southside gym or “the Dome” as it
is known, is building A-296, on
Maple Dr. on the South side of the
Base near the barracks and Air
Force buildings.
The Subgym has quietly been in
operation for the last two years as a
way to provide active living and fitness options to military members
living in barracks without vehicles.
Although primarily used for unit PT
classes and activities, the Subgym is
in fact, open to all Defence Team
members and Buell members. Units
can book the space through the
Support Request System.
This fully outfitted gym is open
Monday to Thursday from 5:45 a.m.
to 8 p.m. and Fridays from 5:45 a.m.
to 6 p.m. It has beautiful change
rooms, fully outfitted with showers
and lockers for your convenience as
well as an extensive cubby system
out on the main floor for additional
storage.
“Both gyms are really similar,”
explains Gilles Mercier, Facilities
Coordinator. “In fact, the machines
V
Cardio equipment, including treadmills, spin bikes, rowers and elliptical machines are all at the
Subgym waiting for your workout.
here are newer than the ones in the
Fieldhouse. We do find it’s underutilized right now; we should have
more traffic coming here.”
This might change however, as
ball hockey is very popular at the
Subgym. A wall of hockey boards
separates the team game area from
the cardio and weights, with a wall
of netting on order that should be
ready to go for the month of March,
re-opening ball hockey that is currently on hold due to safety issues
created by flying balls.
The Subgym has all the equipment necessary for ball hockey as
well as a host of other sports, with a
compact version of Sports Stores
available for users. They have balls,
nets and extra cardio equipment
ready to go, and if there is something they are missing, it can easily
be brought over from the Buell.
So come on over and take advantage of this quiet, well-outfitted gym
and share the secret so we can make
the most of our facilities!
sportif.

Honours Black Canadians’ Contributions
Commander of the Canadian Army
“During February, we mark the vital role
that black Canadians, past and present, have
played in shaping our multi-cultural country. Black History Month gives us the
opportunity to reflect on the way the
courage, experiences, and achievements of
Canadians of African and Caribbean heritage are woven into and strengthen the fabric of our military institution and of our
nation.

Past generations of black soldiers and
those currently serving have earned our
admiration for their part in safeguarding our
freedom. Whether in times of conflict or
peace, black Canadians have always been
ready to serve in whatever capacity Canada
required, in combat missions and later in
peacekeeping operations. Going back to the
beginning of Canadian military history,
black Canadians did not wait to be asked to
volunteer. At the start of the War of 1812
and during the Rebellion of 1837, they
stepped forward to show their desire to
defend our country. In times of peace, they
were among the more devoted participants
in the militia.
The many sacrifices and accomplishments of generations of black Canadians are
a reminder that the greatest strength of the
Canadian Army is its people.
The foundation of that strength is the
welcoming of men and women from all cultures. The Army belongs to the citizens of
Canada and needs to reflect our nation’s cultural, ethnic, and linguistic makeup.
Diversity plays a key role in ensuring the
Army of Tomorrow remains strong, innovative, and forward looking.
On behalf of the Canadian Army, I invite
all Canadians to join me in celebrating
Black History Month.”

Petits conseils pour gérer le stress!

ow that January is over, you’re probably noticing that the post-holiday glow you had is starting to diminish and stress may be creeping its
way back into your life. That is why it’s so important that
you take proactive steps now in order to reduce stress and
stay both physically and mentally healthy.
Three of the simplest steps you can take to ensure your
mental and physical well being are: get enough sleep, eat a
healthy and balanced diet, and exercise. The Health

you maintain balance, such as Stress: Take Charge!, Top

JOINT BANK ACCOUNTS:
THE POOR MAN'S WILL
hen Mrs. Surette made her
son a joint holder of her
bank account, she probably
thought he would take care of her when
she no longer could. She did not expect
that she would have to sue her son to get
back the money he withdrew from the
account. She said it was a loan. The son
said it was a gift. Fortunately for Mrs.
Surette, the son could not prove her
intent to give him the money and had to
repay her (Surette v. Surette).
If you are considering a joint account,
be sure your joint account holder is trustworthy. Remember, if you don't have
enough money in your account to pay
your expenses, the joint account holder
could not pay your bills. Appointing a
power of attorney for finances lets you
give someone access to all your assets to
pay your bills.
A joint account gives you a chance to
Uncover More Legal Grounds at:
beat the tax man if you give the joint
account holder a "right of survivorship."
Just as a joint account cannot replace a
power of attorney for finances, it cannot
replace a will as an estate planning tool.
Leaving everything to the joint account
holder to avoid probate taxes may be fine
with the joint account holder, but the rest
of your family may not think much of the
idea.
A joint account gives you interesting
options when planning your estate. They
should be used carefully though and as
part of your overall plan and not as a substitute for it.
