SAINTLY LIVES
ST. CLAUDE de la COLOMBIERE
Jesuit (1641-1682)
As a young Jesuit, St. Claude cultivated a deep
devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This prepared
him well when he was appointed superior of the Jesuit
house at Paray-le-Monial in Burgundy. At the local
visitation convent there was a nun named Margaret
Mary Alacoque (later canonized), the recipient of a
series of mysterious revelations directing her to
promote devotion to the Sacred Heart. After
encountering discouragement from both her superior
and her confessor, she happened to hear Claude
preach. Immediately she “heard in her soul” the
words, “He it is I send you.” She asked him to
become her confessor, and from him found great
consolation in her mission: “He taught me to cherish
the gifts of God and to receive his communications
with faith and humility.”
In 1676 Claude was sent to London to serve as a
preacher to the Duchess of York at the Queen’s
chapel at St. James’ Palace. Though he traveled
incognito, it was a perilous assignment. In the wake
of the “Popish Plot” of Titus Oates, Claude was
seized and imprisoned. Tried before the House of
Commons, he was spared execution by the personal
intervention of King Louis XIV. After returning to
France, his health broken by his ordeal, he lived on
for only three years.
He died on February 15, 1682. He was canonized in
1992.
It is one of the most firmly established and consoling
of truths that have been revealed to us that nothing
happens to us in life unless God wills it so.”
-St. Claude de La Colombiere
SPIRITUAL REFLECTIONS
No Earthly Messiah
It is impossible to live in the world without being
exposed to its chaotic and unyielding nature. There
are no desert places to spare us its contact. Having
assumed human nature in its totality, Jesus
experiences this from the outset of his ministry. Since
the crowds come to him, he goes to them,
endeavoring with patience and without
discouragement to make them understand that he is
not the earthly Messiah they are dreaming of. By
inopportunely proclaiming his title of Son of God,
demons are seeking to discredit him and pretend he is
their leader (Mark 3:22). Whenever demons raise
their voices, Jesus silences them. But he will have to
face their repeated assaults and will not escape this
war of attrition. He will emerge victorious but only on
the cross, when a pagan, seeing “how he breathed his
last” will cry out in an act of wholehearted faith,
“Truly this man was the Son of God”. (Mark 15:39)
The authority manifested by his teaching, his power
over disease and evil spirits, unceasingly pose the
question of Jesus’ identity. The Christians assembled
for the liturgy certainly know that he is the Son of
God, the Good News, the Savior, who on the cross
took upon himself our sickness and sins: this is the
mystery of faith celebrated in every Eucharist. But to
celebrate it in spirit and in truth requires that we
constantly allow ourselves to be purified by the word
and touch of the Lord from every stain on our faith,
that we accept to be driven ever further by Christ and
the liturgy. If we want to belong wholeheartedly to
the Lord, we shall often have to make choices
contradicting those of the world or those of our
immediate small world. But then we set out on the
way of freedom and, being all things to all, we share
in the work of salvation for God’s glory, with our
eyes fixed on Christ, our model.
