Medication Safety
T
–From Safe Kids Worldwide
he typical household has changed
significantly in recent years. Since
2005, more grandparents live with
their grandchildren; in fact, 13 percent
of grandparents provide care for a grandchild on a regular basis. Many grandparents
use easy-open instead of child-resistant
containers and store medications on a
bathroom sink, counter or bedside table.
Also, many grandparents keep children’s
medicine on a counter or table between
doses. These locations, easily accessible to
children, can be hazardous or even fatal.
Sixty-four thousand times a year a child
goes to the emergency room for medicine
poisoning. In three out of four of those
visits, a child got into medicine belonging
to a parent or grandparent.
Remember:
•Keep all medicine away from
children, even medicine you
take every day.
•Be aware of pills in purses,
vitamins on counters and
medicines on nightstands.
•Choose child-resistant caps,
if you are able. If not, it’s
even more important to
store containers out of sight.
•Carefully read and follow
labels before taking or
giving medicine.
•Program the National Poison
Help Number (1-800-222-1222)
into your phone.
Visit www.safekids.org for more tips on safe storage, safe dosing and
safe disposal of medicine.
