WORDS FROM FR GREG:
The season of Lent brings us to reflect, connect, and act. We believe in the Covenant, "You will be
my people and I will be your God. I will place a natural heart in you and take away your stony
hearts. I will forgive all your transgressions and forget your sins."
This is God's non-negotiable, eternal love for us. Never again, will God destroy the earth with a
flood. The updated Covenant is Jesus, God's son.
This transformative love is visible through Jesus freely choosing through his passion, death, and
Resurrection to love unconditionally.
Like any relationship, you and I are asked, free will, to respond through forgiveness and visibly
acting in love, charity toward our neighbor. Charity naturally occurs when we are transformed by
unconditional love. Our hearts, souls are motivated, self-driven to give freely what we received
freely. The spiritual antibiotic is seeking forgiveness of self and forgiving others. Like any antibiotic, we take it occasionally and the whole dosage Desire to name our sins, naming them in Reconciliation, being forgiven, and doing acts of charity because we desire to spread this life-giving love.
Covenant prepares us for living. Jesus’ indwelling presence, the Holy Spirit, prepares us for life and
for embracing evil in the world. Because we love, we are aware, alerted to, and strengthened to
address what is hurtful and divisive and creates pain and destroys lives. We have the insight to
speak to the truth that sets us free. Yes, this means we can suffer with, we can accept people not
liking us or not fitting in with the group. We grow in our identity with life, with values, with a
willingness to protect the dignity and respect of others.
Lent is all about growing up, developing a conscience, willing to do the right thing for the GOOD of
others. We grow in our awareness of others. We desire to act in ways that develop trust, honesty,
compassion, forgiveness for the GOOD of others more than for getting my way, my thoughts, my
control, my power. We can sacrifice (make holy) by living, being, and doing for others. This is how
we continue to restore and renew our faith, our love, our ability to develop a conscience. IT IS IN
GIVING THAT WE RECEIVE. GIVING WITH A WILLING HEART, A HEART DESIRING THE
GOOD OF OTHERS. This will necessarily incur suffering and pain. Love embraces this
willingly.
What am I willing to do this Lent to grow up? What do I need to ask forgiveness for in order to desire to be a life giver, a healer, a deeper awareness and desire to do GOOD for others instead of being
selfish and self-centered? Remember, fasting from selfishness and self-centeredness, seeking forgiveness and forgiving, and do acts of kindness.
What a better world we create. What a better family we create. What a better community we
create. DO I DESIRE???????
