New Fitness Suite at JRCS
From the middle of next week we will have a
brand new, state of the art Fitness Suite at
JRCS. The old library has been converted to
accommodate a wide range of the highest
quality fitness equipment. This new facility
will allow our students to access some of the
best fitness and weights equipment in the
Borough. The suite is also open to the
general public both at selected times during
the day as well as evenings and weekends. I
will make sure that I put more details about
this exciting development at JRCS in next
week’s Seagull.
Year 9 Options Evening
It was a pleasure to see so many of our Year
9 parents in school on Thursday night. This
is obviously an incredibly important time for
our Year 9 students as they are about to
make a decision about the courses that they
will study at Key Stage 4. I look forward to
seeing our Year 9 parents again on Thursday
12th March when a final decision will be taken
about the choices that their son/daughter has
made.

Reminder to parents

as to why they are unable to attend school

your child is marked absent with no reason,
you may receive a visit from our Student
Services Manager responsible for
attendance.
Red Nose day has
always been a brilliant
tradition at Jo Richardson
and this year is no
exception. Red noses
will be on sale next week
and Friday 13th Marchthe
day will be marked as a day of fancy dress.
The cost of non-uniform is a £1 donation to
the Red Nose appeal and ALL money raised
will be sent to this amazing organisation.

University of Cambridge Challenge Day
World Book Day - Thursday 5th March 2015
Book your time slot for your ‘fifteen minutes of
fame’ taking part in the annual all day JRCS
Reading Marathon. For those who are not
familiar with this event, a staged area is set
up in Main Street and different students take
turns reading for fifteen minutes each
throughout the day. (You will read to yourself
and can use your own book or choose one
available on the day.)
This runs from 8.30am – 3.00pm.
The theme this year is sport, energy to fuel
your mind while gaining a wealth of
knowledge from books.
To take part and book your time slot, see
Ms Osland in the library.
Ten Year 10 students were taken to
Cambridge in order to learn about studying at
that top university. In addition to a tour and
some lectures, our students participated in a
challenge against 10 other schools from
across the country and won!

Emma Wade OBE
We have been afforded the opportunity to
have one of Britain’s leading women in the
field of Human Rights from the Foreign and
Commonwealth Office deliver a lecture to our
students on Wednesday 18th March. Emma
Wade OBE received the award for leading
the evacuation of thousands of British
Nationals from Egypt and more than 700 from
Libya in the recent conflicts. Her work in
responding to natural disasters in New
Zealand and Japan and the recent unrest in
the Ivory Coast has been highly praised and
also earned her a high accolade as an
£1 Book Tokens
To encourage and help students on their
reading journey on World Book Day, students
will receive a £1 World Book Day book token
which can either be exchanged for one of ten
special £1 World Book Day books or used to
get £1 off any book costing £2.99 or more.

Sixth Form “Student Finance for
University” Talks
Tuesday 10th March 6:00pm – 7:00pm

With Year 13 students now receiving their
offers from universities, it is time to think
about the money! The Sixth Form Team are
putting on two sessions to explain what
“Student Finance” is all about, what you can
apply for and how to do it. It is expected that
students in Year 13, applying to university,
will attend one of the two sessions but
parents are also invited to attend whichever
session is most convenient.
There will be an opportunity to ask questions
and also pick up some useful tips and
guidance to make sure applications are as
easy as possible.
We look forward to seeing you at one of the
sessions.

Panathlon Success
On Thursday 12th February, Mr Kilminster
and I accompanied 11 students from Years
7 – 9 who got through the Panathlon trials to
represent the Borough at the Round 1
Panathlon Challenge taking place at Langdon
School in Newham, where they competed
against teams from Havering. It was a
brilliant day of competition, and all the JRCS
students tried very hard, leading to some
brilliant performances and lots of medals!
Enrique Del Rio and Khai Sesay both got
bronze medals for their performance on the
boccia team, Jake Pengelly, Charlotte Mew
and Harry Ely all won silver medals as part of
the table cricket team, Daniel Odejide and
David Olanrewaji achieved silver against stiff
competition in the javelin, Abigail Jacobs
worked very hard achieving a personal best
time and gaining a silver medal in the
wheelchair slalom. We also came away with
three gold medals, two of which were won by
Reon Lawrence–Wright with a huge jump in
the standing long jump, he was also part of
the victorious new age kurling team. Nathan
Batt also achieved gold with a very focussed
performance in the shot putt event.
We also had a pleasant surprise during the
day, when we found a familiar face coming to
visit us. Mr Armour now works at Langdon
School, and he spotted the school minibus in
the car park and came to find us. The
students were pleased to see him, and
enjoyed showing off their medals.
The Barking and Dagenham team overall
won the athletics field events
competition. Abigail Jacobs, Charlotte Mew,
Daniel Odejide, Harry Ely and David
Olanrewaju also participated in the athletics
races team which came in second place. It
was an extremely exciting finish with three
Boroughs within a few points of each other
right up until the final events. However,
Barking and Dagenham managed to win by
just two points. The school trophy cabinet
outside the School Office now contains the
winner’s trophy. This means that the team
are through to round 2 event which takes
place at University of East London Sports
Dock on Tuesday 17th March.
the hail stone weather the courts were a bit
slippery and the wind was rather chilly but the
teams were in high spirits. We have such a
good turnout at Year 7 netball we now have
an A and a B team for the first time in years.
The B team started their netball careers
unbeaten winning against Barking Abbey B
1-0 and drawing with the A team 1-1. The A
team had a bad start only winning 1-0 against
Barking Abbey A team but getting it together
for the second match and beating Barking
Abbey B 8-0.
We now have to wait and see if we have won
enough matches to qualify for the finals of the
Borough league in March.

for the B team and Dannie Ihezuo-Nnadi 7F
and Gerren Ntiri 7G for the A team.

Below is a copy of Year 10 and 11 exam timetable which starts on Monday 9th February. These are
internal exams and students will be required to attend normal lessons. Please make sure students have a
good breakfast and they have the correct equipment with them for each exam, including a calculator (if
needed) and a black pen. If they wish to, they may bring water, but this needs to be in a clear plastic bottle
with the label removed. Please remind your child that under no circumstances should mobile phones be
taken into exam rooms. If your child is unable to attend any of their exams, please call the attendance line
as usual and we will require a letter from your doctor.

NEW LIBRARY WEBSITE
The library now has a fabulous new website for students called ‘Eclipse’.
Once students have logged into their school account they will be
automatically logged into Eclipse. (‘Eclipse’ can be found in ‘Department’ –
‘Library’ – ‘Eclipse’.)
The website has the appearance of a desktop and is interactive, and there
is plenty to check out on the site.
Attention all KS3 students!
Are you interested in doing some fun Science experiments,
collect credits and LOCs? If yes, take part in the Science
Spring challenge. Here’s what to do:
1. Each Friday on the Smarties Science Club website there
All the books in the library are logged on the Eclipse system allowing
students to easily view their library account of current books on loan,
overdue books, past loans and lots more to do like:

2. Conduct the experiment at home, take a few photos
showing your results – you could even film yourself doing
the experiment – and email it to Miss Ochwat.
3. For each experiment you are going to get 10 credits. If
you complete 7 out of 12 challenges, you will receive an
LOC.
