Among his many books are Calm, Alert and Learning: Classroom Strategies for Self-Regulation (2012); Human Development in the 21st Century (with Alan Fogel and Barbara King, 2008); Early Years Study II (with J. Fraser Mustard and Margaret McCain, 2007); Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual (as a member of the PDM Steering Committee, 2006); and The First Idea (with Stanley Greenspan, 2004). Over the past decade, Shanker has served as an advisor on early child development to government organizations across Canada and the US and in countries around the world. Most recently, he served as the 2012 Thinker in Residence for Western Australia. In Canada, he is currently the CEO of the MEHRIT Centre, Ltd., (www.mehritcentre.com), and is assisting in the rolling out of a self-regulation classroom initiative with several Superintendents under the auspices of the Ministry of Education in British Columbia, Yukon, North West Territories and Ontario. Dr. Shanker will speak about Self-Regulation and its application specifically related to youth mental health. @StuartShanker Self-Regulation Team Durham District School Board (DDSB) This group of presenters will talk about Positive Mental Health through Self-Regulation in DDSB Schools. The panel includes: Ken MacNaughton, Administrative Officer, Safe Schools; Allison Potts, Mental Health Lead; Tracy Krys, Elementary Teacher; and Kathleen Costa, Secondary Teacher. DDSB will discuss the their journey into introducing and embedding classroom Self-Regulation strategies which support students in remaining calm, alert and ready to learn. The presentation will provide an overview how the DDSB strategically linked Self-Regulation to their Mental Health Strategic plan while providing support, training and resources to schools. Practical examples of how the strategies are being successfully implemented at both Elementary and Secondary Schools will be shared. @DurhamDSB Theo Koffler Mindfulness Without Borders Mounting workloads, information overload and constant pressure to achieve leads to high levels of stress and anxiety. Today, research is drawing a clear link between mindfulness, enhanced learning, and lowered stress. Join Theo Koffler, Founder and Executive Director of Mindfulness Without Borders, and learn life skills and secular mindfulness practices that you can share with others in nearly any setting. Participants will walk away with tools and integration strategies to manage life’s challenges with more resilience and less stress. Since 2007, Mindfulness Without Borders has been facilitating professional development workshops and youth programs to help individuals cultivate insight, reflect on guiding values, set personal goals, exercise inherent qualities and attributes, and build a repertoire of skills and practices that contribute to leading life with more awareness, intention, resilience and compassion. Our evidence-based programs impart best practices in social-emotional learning (SEL) and secular mindfulness to adolescents, their educators and professionals. This presentation will include an introduction to secular mindfulness practices as a tool for self-care and classroom stress management. The content will cover the basic neuroscience behind practicing intentional attention, examples of mindfulness as a technique to promote positive student mental health and applications for personal and professional use, Ms. Koffler will highlight the research study on our evidence-based curriculum for the Mindfulness Ambassador Council and the importance of social & emotional learning in education. Participants will experience a breathing practice and engage in a brief discussion on the tools and techniques that they can apply in their respective communities. @MindfulWoB
