How can I pray the Lord’s Prayer better? (Part VII)
The Fifth Petition of the Lord’s Prayer IS FORGIVE US OUR
TRESPASSES, AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US.
If the Gospel is to be summed up in a few words, it would be
‘Mercy’ and ‘Grace.’ The petition here tells us clearly that the
mercy we receive will be in proportion to the mercy we give.
This Jesus tells us again and again in the gospels. In the
‘Parable of the Unmerciful Servant,’ for example, Jesus tells the
story of a king who demanded that his servant pay what he
owed; begging forgiveness the king pardoned the servant’s
debt. But the servant, in turn, demanded that his servants pay
what he owed, thus refusing to ‘pay it forward’ the mercy of the
king. When the king found out, he said “You wicked servant! I
forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. Should
you not have had mercy on your fellow-slave, as I had mercy
on you?” (Lk 18:23-35). The parable’s end is severe: “And in
anger his lord handed him over to be punished until he should
pay his entire debt. So my heavenly Father will also do to
every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother or sister
from your heart” (v. 34, 35).
Without question, many people have valid reason to be hurt
and a valid reason for wanting to withhold forgiveness. ‘Letting
go’ of a grudge for past wrongs done to us isn’t easy. What’s
important to remember is that, at least, we have a desire to
forgive, then to ask for the grace to forgive those who have
harmed us. And be patient with yourself!
In addition to mutual forgiveness, there are three
conditions of Divine Mercy which we must follow if we wish to
be forgiven. Remember: God’s love is unconditional, God’s
mercy is not.
1. Compunction Being ‘sorry’ for our sins simply because
they offend God’s justice is necessary. Hence the words of
Jesus, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be
comforted (Mt 5:4). St Paul wrote, “For godly grief produces a
repentance that leads to salvation and brings no regret…”
(2 Cor 7:10).
2. Amendment We must resolve, at least now not to
repeat the same sins again (although we might). What is
important is that at the moment of repentance we make ‘firm
resolution of amendment’ to avoid the same wrong again. It
also means ‘righting a wrong,’ of repairing the damage done to
the social order by my sin, e.g., if I have stolen, then I must
repay. Here it is important to remember that we are not
restoring a strict ‘balance of justice’ but, rather, repairing harm
with acts of charity. This is properly called ‘penance’ (cf Lk 3:10
-14, 19:8-9).
3. Act of Contrition We cannot be presumptuous of God’s
mercy—we must ask for it. An act of contrition (whether in a
set formula or in our own words) is a prayer invoking God’s
loving pardon (cf Ps 51).
When praying the Fifth Petition, take care not to repeat it
mechanically, but intentionally and with the right dispositions
outlined above. “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on
me, a sinner!”

SOW MUCH LOVE
CAMPAIGN
SOWING SEEDS OF JUSTICE FOR
WOMEN AND GIRLS IN NIGERIA
Doubly poor are those women who endure situations of exclusion, mistreatment, and violence, since they are frequently less
able to defend their rights. Even so, we constantly witness
among them impressive examples of daily heroism in defending and protecting their vulnerable families.
Pope Francis, The Joy of the Gospel, 212.
Supporting women and girls is a priority for DEVELOPMENT
AND PEACE. When 276 girls were kidnapped by Boko Haram
from Chibok in Nigeria, our local Nigerian partner began working for their freedom, and has managed to smuggle three girls
to safety. “The three girls, who were 17, 18, and 19 years old,
still seemed to be under the effect of the swirl of emotions
generated by the trials they experienced since their abduction,”
states Raphael Yimga Tatchi, DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE
program officer for Nigeria. “Their voices and lost eyes betray
deep pain… glimmers of humanity shine through only when
they courageously recount the details of their escape.”

Friday, April 3.

SOCIETY OF SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL
ST. THERESA’S CONFERENCE
WHEN WAS THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF
JAMAICA FORMED?
In 1945, a Central Council was instituted as the governing body
of the society in Jamaica, and Mr. Joseph Issa was elected its
first President. In recent years, this Council has been renamed
the National Council to conform to current international
standards.
WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE A MEMBER OF
THE SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL?
When someone becomes a member of the Society, they don't
just “join” an organization and attend a few meetings. They
embark upon a new way of life. The character of true Vincentians is reflected in their mildness of manner and the temperate
tone of their actions. Visiting many families and seeing their
difficulties throughout the year teaches people to face their own
problems more readily.
